This is the ninety-ninth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Vaiyatal's first battle against Bharata's army, his withdrawal to empower the palm-wood club, Cakkrawat sending Phetra to hold the field, Angkhot killing Phetra, Nilaphat and Asuraphat breaking Vaiyatal's rite in Kuru, and Nilaphat using disguise to deceive Vaiyatal on the road.

Vaiyatal's Rite Is Broken

Then Bharata, splendid solar-line lord, slept on the bright couch inside the golden pavilion while the forest-monkey soldiers sat on guard by the fires. The last watch passed, rain fell on the earth, crickets and cicadas sounded sweetly, birds and roosters woke, bees and insects flew to savor flower-fragrance, stars and moon moved out of the sky, the sun neared dawn with spreading light, and the music of trumpets, conches, and gongs woke the lord from sleep.

He bathed and refreshed his body, put on shining nine-gem ornaments, left the glittering jeweled chamber, and passed out among the soldiers.

He lowered himself onto the lovely throne, beautiful like Indra. Just then he heard the asura voices shouting in uproar. He asked the younger brother of Thotsakan: "Who has brought so heavy an army? Is it Cakkrawat the asura, or another demon?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the command and read the omen by the day's hour and sign. Seeing clearly as if with Indra's divine eye, he reported to the younger brother of the Garuda-bearing lord: "The army that has marched today is not Cakkrawat the demon lord. It is Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha, friend of the lord of Maliwan, dwelling beneath the earth and ruling Kuru city. They love one another in deep faith. He has power through a jeweled discus and a palm-wood mace."

Then Bharata, solar-line archer, heard the brother of the twenty-handed king and gave royal command: "Listen, Phraya Waiwongsa. Arrange the brave soldiers. We will march out to fight and destroy the enemy kings."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received the mighty lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He arranged a brave bird-formation. The son of Phra Kal was the head and wings; Keyura and Mayura were the two eyes; Pingkhala the monkey was the upper beak; Nilapanan the lower beak; Malunthakeson the neck; mighty Angkhot the right wing; Chomphuphan the left wing; Komut the left foot; the Wind-born son the right foot; the royal center was the body; Hanuman, mighty in war, was the tail. Yakshas and monkeys stood alternately as claws and feathers, each holding weapons, restless and war-proud. Officers and soldiers were powerful, brave, fierce, deep in strength, and crowded over the earth.

Then radiant Bharata invited the younger brother who shared his life to go bathe in the water.

Divine water poured down like rain from lotus sprinklers, sweetly fragrant. They wore perfumes mixed with flower-garlands. Their lower garments were jeweled, with curved borders; their clothes were different shades of purple and young leaf, braided into lion forms. Side panels and fluttering cloth were adorned with swan-vine patterns and shining rubies. Tight upper garments touched their arms; three necklaces and chains crossed their bodies. Direction-plates, chest ornaments, carved bracelets and armlets, and yellow diamond rings shone on all ten fingers. Crowns, flowers, bright ear ornaments, and golden garlands adorned them. Each held the great royal bow, beautiful like drops of heaven descending to earth, and walked gracefully to mount the chariot.

O chariot, palace-chariot: three raised crests stood high and graceful. Jeweled rims circled the wheels, and the hubs gleamed with gems. Lotus moldings, a jeweled throne, crestwork, and hanging bodhi-leaf panels adorned it; its four-faced pavilion seemed a floating heavenly mansion, with golden summit-light. Four strong red horses, bright as water-lilies, were harnessed to it and leapt forward with fierce power. Shatrughna sat bowing with joined hands. The charioteer drove swiftly as wind. Victory flags, tiered parasols, yak-tail whisks, gongs, and drums shone and sounded in layers. Wheels rumbled through the world, soldiers shouted, and the army hurried by divisions in war-pride.

Then on Thao Vaiyatal's side, he stood in his chariot in the middle of the army. The asura glanced aside and saw the monkey and monkey-king army marching in numbers beyond count, with the two humans in the victorious chariot among the soldiers, beautiful like sun and moon descended from the zodiac. He ordered the jeweled chariot driven through the asura host and came forward.

He cried: "Hey, two humans. Why are you wicked, jealous, and greedy beyond measure, like forest thieves? You keep company only with monkey rabble and come to plunder royal power from Thao Cakkrawat the kumbhanda, breaking rightful custom. I am a friend, a death-friend of the yaksha king, named Vaiyatal the asura, ruler of the underworld city. In every asura realm, in every direction, no one can match my force and power. I came hoping to learn plainly what wrong the demon king has done. Yet you are so arrogant and proud that you do not fear the solar-line yakshas. Whatever your power may be, I do not fear death."

Then Bharata, solar-line lord, heard and answered: "Hey, hey, Phraya Vaiyatal. Do you not know the cause, that you dare speak so boldly? Cakkrawat the demon lord committed unrighteous action and broke dharma. He listened to Painasuriyawong, raised a fourfold army, seized Phiphek the kumbhanda, and bound him in prison, out of arrogant jealousy and without fear of Phra Narai's feet. The mighty lord therefore sent us, his two younger brothers, to wage war and cleanse the yaksha line. We first sent a letter to speak peacefully. Your friend answered with vile defiance, raised a demon army, and attacked. So the asura lineage has perished. You come speaking in proud rage and do not know Phra Kal. Your crowned head will fly off, cut by my victorious arrow of power."

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha heard and grew still angrier, grinding his teeth. "Bah, Narai's younger brother, you are not ashamed to speak in delusion. Good, then you will see. I will chop your whole body to pieces." Having spoken, he gave command to the demon ministers: "Hurry the army forward. Strike and kill the two human brothers."

Then Ronaphop, commander of the vanguard, received the order and drove the army in to strike the monkeys.

They hurled weapons in confusion. Some shot arrows; others stabbed with lances and javelins, hacking and slashing in turmoil.

Then the strong monkey army split its force to meet the kumbhandas, driving in waves. Some struck, some kicked, some bit, seizing and throwing the demons, tearing arms and legs. Demon soldiers lay dead everywhere while the monkeys chased and killed in confusion.

Then Ronaphop and Ronaphan, great soldiers, saw the kumbhanda troops die and grew angry as world-ending fire. The two officers brandished maces, displayed fierce power and brave strength, ground their teeth, leapt and bounded, and attacked the monkeys in uproar.

Then brave Nilaphat and Asuraphat saw the two yakshas chase the monkeys. Their eyes reddened like flame. The two displayed power until the ten directions shook and trembled, brandished trident and club swiftly, and entered combat with the two asuras.

Then the two yaksha soldiers received, guarded, and fought against the two battle-wise monkeys. Ronaphop leapt and seized Nilaphat; Ronaphan fought Asuraphat. All four were locked in combat, each enduring and refusing to give way.

Then the two soldiers of splendid Phra Narai fought close, tangled in confusion, seizing the two asuras. They struck, stabbed, guarded, and parried, each brave and bold. Mighty Nilaphat killed Ronaphop. Asuraphat struck Ronaphan so that he fell, unable to withstand the force. The two officers cut off the heads and threw them before the asura's victorious chariot.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha lost soldiers and troops and grew angry like final fire. He stamped his foot and urged the royal chariot forward, its sound like the sky collapsing. Grinding his teeth, he brandished the palm-wood club and chased into combat with the monkeys.

Then the two soldiers of Narai's younger brother leapt forward with battle-power. Nilaphat seized the crest of the victorious chariot and smashed it down upon the earth; the chariot broke to pieces, the royal lions and charioteer died, and Asuraphat pressed in to attack.

They slaughtered the demon army until none could resist. When they reached the demon king's front, the two soldiers mocked him back and forth.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha fell upon the earth, seized the mace-weapon, sprang up, brandished it, and displayed courage. The sound shook in heavy uproar as he surged angrily into battle against the two mighty soldiers.

Then the younger brother of Hari, lord of the discus, saw the hostile asura attacking close and pressing forward. He drew the Brahmastra, beautiful like his elder brother Narai, set it on the string, drew with mighty strength, and released it.

It cracked like thunder. It became arrows scattered beyond counting and struck the lord of the great underworld city, piercing the asura's whole body.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha, arrows fixed all through his body, raised joined hands and recited powerful spells.

When he had completed three recitations, he stroked downward; the arrows slipped from the yaksha's body. He brandished the powerful jeweled discus and hurled it by force.

It struck the monkey army, and they lay dead everywhere as far as Akaniṭṭha. Clouds caught the sun's light, and darkness spread like the hell-world.

Then splendid solar-line Bharata could not see the sun's radiance and grew troubled at heart. "Ah, will this be like Banlai Chak, when the demon lord bound and carried off my younger brother?" He took the Chandra-Aditya victorious arrow, set it on the string, and released it by power.

It destroyed the jeweled discus, grinding it to pieces. The sun shone bright in the sky again. It struck Vaiyatal the asura in the chest and hurled him to the forest edge.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha was not hurt in body. He brandished the club and chased the monkeys.

Then the son of Phra Kal, skilled in war, seized the mighty diamond trident and rushed in to oppose the asura.

With his foot he kicked; with his hand he seized the palm-wood club. He leapt up, stepped on Vaiyatal's right knee, and they turned and grappled back and forth, each brave and bold in combat.

Then strong, mighty Vaiyatal struck left and swept right in confusion, not thinking of his life. The two seized and fought in turmoil, neither retreating nor fleeing, each guarding, each parrying, each striking, each taking his turn without lowering his hands.

Then the son of Phra Kal, skilled in war, brandished the powerful diamond trident, shifted his hands, and feinted back and forth. He rushed in, kicked Vaiyatal so that he staggered, seized the yaksha, and smashed him to the ground with a sound that shook sky and earth.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha fought alone, almost to the end of his life. He thought: "These humans and monkeys are fierce, bold, and brave. Is this why the three royal princes fought them and did not survive? Even with the boon my lord gave me, I can hardly withstand them. Their arrows have wounded and troubled me all over my body. If I keep fighting and killing here, one reversal may cost my life. I must withdraw the army to the city and worship this special palm-wood club by the spell of radiant Phra Isuan. In three days it will blaze with power, and I will not need to suffer in battle. Whoever I point at will die with his whole army; there will be no pause in war or capture." Having thought this, he withdrew the great army and returned to Maliwan city.

Then splendid solar-line Bharata saw Vaiyatal the kumbhanda take his army into the city. When the sun set behind the mountain, he ordered the great army to withdraw and return to the bright pavilion.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, after his life-friend had marched out to seek victory, stayed behind listening for news until the bright sun bent behind the mountain. When he saw Vaiyatal, he rejoiced and went to lead him by the hand.

They sat together on the throne, with ministers on left and right crouching in attendance everywhere. The asura spoke the royal word: "My friend marched the army out to fight the two humans and splendid monkeys. Did you win in the battle, or did you lose advantage to them?"

Then splendid Thao Vaiyatal told what had happened in the fighting: "The humans have great fierce power. They are skilled with weapons and bold in strength. Their monkey soldiers and army also all have swift power. Even if I struggle against them, I cannot expect victory. I ask leave of my friend to return to victorious Kuru in the underworld and establish the rite to empower the mace-weapon, so its fierce power will be beyond resistance, according to the boon of wise Phra Isuan. The rite is set for three days. My friend should send troops to hold the field firmly. When it is finished, I will return to fight and kill them all, army and all."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard and rejoiced. He clapped his hands and laughed happily: "This time the enemies will lose their lives with none left. I invite my mighty friend to hurry and perform the rite."

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha, when the command was settled, walked to mount the splendid jeweled chariot.

He ordered the kumbhanda army to leave the royal city of Maliwan, break through the earth, and go to the victorious underworld city.

When he arrived, he gave command to the great ministers: "Set up a shining ritual hall in front of the bright palace court."

Then Wutthikasun the yaksha received the mighty lord's command, raised joined hands, and went out.

He assigned every official, soldiers and civilians, left and right, to set up a grand ritual hall in the victory court.
[2 words]
Then the officers great and small called for servants in turmoil and hurried them to arrange the work in commotion.

Some carried wood and thatch; some cut, dragged, and raised noise. They dug holes and set up posts immediately, according to each assigned place. Thirty-three chambers with verandas were built; royal enclosures and parasols stood in alternating rows. White ceiling cloths shone, golden garlands hung, and the lower floor was spread with carpets. Offering stands stood left and right, with silver and golden candles beautifully arranged, all finished according to the yaksha king's command.

Then mighty Thao Vaiyatal left the beautiful jeweled chamber and turned toward the water to bathe.

Jeweled sprinklers poured down like rain, the mist scented with sweet fragrance. He wore perfumes mixed with flower-garlands, plain white garments clean to the eye, a tight loincloth, and a sacred cord crossing over the shoulder. Powder and unguent brightened his face; his hair was wound and wrapped at the crown. He put on prayer beads and grasped the palm-wood club, looking like a divine rishi. When the auspicious hour arrived, he entered the shining ritual hall.

He planted the palm-wood club before the great ritual hall, worshiped with incense, candles, flowers, and blazing fire, then sat upon the tip of the palm-club, bowed to lord Phra Isuan, gathered his spirit in meditation, closed his eyes, and recited ascetic spells.

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat, after his life-friend had taken the army to his city, gave royal command to Phetra the yaksha: "You are powerful, wise, skilled, and swift. Take the great army to hold the field. Receive the enemy firmly until my heart-friend returns from performing the rite."

Then Phetra the yaksha soldier received the city-lord's command, bowed, took leave, and hurried away.

He arranged soldiers skilled in war, stout, deep in strength, and battle-wise. Six divisions, all powerful, brandished weapons in uproar. Then, dressed in handsome war gear like a lion-king, and fastening the mighty mace at his side, the asura mounted the war elephant.

O elephant, war elephant: fierce, bad-tempered, proud, and brave. Its two eyes were red like final fire; it stood tall, rising like Mount Sattaphan. Its four feet stamped in pride, and its roar shook the earth. Its two tusks were evenly curved; it flapped its ears and called in swelling pride. Brave-hearted and skilled in battle, it was fully harnessed with war-gear. Hearing the roar of shouting troops, it rushed forward to pierce and thrust. The soldiers were all capable, brandishing weapons, eager to break the enemy in open field, and hurried to drive ahead.

When he reached the battlefield, he halted the soldiers great and small and set the army firmly along the forested rise.

Then Bharata, solar-line archer, sat on the splendid throne among the monkey soldiers, who crouched in attendance at their places. He shone like Indra among the divine armies, consulting on how to destroy the vile, unrighteous, deluded enemy. Then he heard the kumbhanda voices shouting in thunderous uproar.

He gave royal command and asked Phraya Phiphek the yaksha: "This army marching out, is it Vaiyatal the asura, or someone else?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the mighty lord's command and read the time-sign. Seeing clearly, he bowed and reported to the solar-line king: "The army that has marched out is not Vaiyatal the asura. He has withdrawn to victorious Kuru city to perform the rite that will empower the palm-wood club. If three nights pass according to the command of Phra Suli's boon, he will not die unless the rite is broken. This club has terrible poison-power: whoever he points at with himself will die; whoever he points at with its tip will live again. Thao Cakkrawat has ordered a soldier named Phetra to lead the kumbhanda troops and hold the field. Let mighty Angkhot march out to kill that demon lord. Let the son of Phra Kal, in power and courage, go to the victorious underworld city to destroy the rite. Then plan to fight and seize the yaksha's mace; without his heart-weapon, the asura will die."

Then splendid solar-line Bharata heard Phraya Kumbhanda and gave royal command: "Listen, son of Pali, mighty and brave. Lead the great army to kill the vile asura. And let Nilaphat hurry to victorious Kuru city to destroy Vaiyatal's rite and end his life."

Then the two victorious soldiers bowed their heads and received the royal word. Nilaphat the monkey lord reported: "I ask to take Asuraphat with me, so he may help plan and resolve the work. With two of us, we can win without troubling Your Majesty's feet."

Then Bharata, solar-line lord, heard and gave command to the son of Phraya Hanuman: "You, powerful in battle, go down to help the son of Phra Kal break the rite in the underworld."

Then mighty Asuraphat received the command, bowed low, and the three officers went out together.

Angkhot arranged soldiers, choosing only brave and powerful warriors, fourteen oceans in number, each fully armed. The three officers put on their war gear, displayed deep power like lions, then separated and hurried away according to the king's command.

Angkhot reached the battlefield, halted the brave army, and set it beside the forest stream, watching for the demon lord to attack.

Then mighty Phetra the yaksha stood on his elephant in the middle of the army and saw the monkey force march out. He displayed authority, cried out fiercely, drove the elephant straight forward, and shouted: "Hey, hey, forest monkey. What is your name, animal? Why do you boast so excitedly that you are skilled in war, bringing monkey soldiers to fight me? I am a battle-wise soldier of the lord of splendid Maliwan city, named Phetra the asura, with excellent power. My courage is famous through the three worlds, like a general of Phraya Chak. You meddling fool who came to fight a yaksha will lose your life before long."

Then mighty Angkhot heard the kumbhanda's words, clapped his hands in mockery, and answered: "Hey, vile-looking yaksha, arrogant, proud, and gross. I am mighty, nephew of the divine lord Indra, named Phraya Intharanuphap the glorious, viceroy of Khitkhin. My courage is famous and shakes the earth. I have slain asuras by the thousands; blood still clings wet to my hands like a sea between Assakan's ears. Your kind are like flies; before an eye-blink you will die. Even Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha cannot match power with me. His four heads will fly off, cut by this victorious sword."

Then Phetra the yaksha heard the monkey's speech and grew angry as world-ending fire. He brandished his club and roared: "Bah, animal-born one, your words are vile and low. I will kill you." Then he immediately shouted command: "Hey, hey, demon vanguard, attack, strike together, and kill the forest monkey."

Then the battle-wise demon troops each displayed fighting power and struck the monkey army in confusion.

Some cut, some stabbed, some contested the fight, and some divisions fired great guns. They shouted in battle-pride, officers and soldiers pressing forward together.

Then the monkey vanguard received the asuras in battle and struck, surrounding them all at once.
[2 words]
They bit with mouths, kicked with feet, struck with hands, dodged swiftly like turning wheels, snatched weapons, stabbed, and cut, until the kumbhandas lay dead across the earth.

Then powerful, brave-hearted Phetra saw the monkeys chase and kill the demon soldiers, who scattered and fell dead senseless. Angry, grinding his teeth, he gave a roar that rang loudly, drew the hook, and drove the elephant straight in to chase the monkeys in the middle of the army.

The elephant raised its tail, spread its ears, lifted its trunk, and charged, piercing and thrusting in confusion. Its four feet kicked and bit in turmoil, and the monkeys broke and recoiled.

Then Angkhot, mighty and brave-hearted, saw Phetra the asura drive the elephant in to pierce the monkeys. Furious, he stamped his foot, displayed authority like a lion-king, leapt forward into battle, and stepped upon the elephant's tusk by power.

With his right hand he seized the base of the jaw, wrenched it open, and broke the elephant's neck. It fell and its life ended by the victorious monkey's strength.

Then brave-hearted, powerful Phetra flew from the elephant's neck. The demon lord sprang up and stood firm. With one hand he brandished the mace-weapon, displaying fierce power until the earth shook. Angry, grinding his teeth, the kumbhanda leapt into battle.

His left foot stepped on Angkhot's right knee; his hand seized the splendid monkey's neck. They twisted and grappled, each stabbing and striking in confusion.

Then the great soldier, nephew of Thao Makkhawan, dodged and slipped with swift agility, leapt in and seized him, sprang up, and stepped on his shoulder. With one hand he raised the royal sword, brandished it, struck, and cut until the kumbhanda's life ended.

When he had finished destroying the demon lord, the glorious nephew of Thao Makkhawan cut off the asura's head and withdrew the army back.

Then brave Nilaphat and Asuraphat split through the earth and reached the underworld realm. A red-stone wall enclosed the city, bright with pearl jewels. They stopped together outside the gate and recited splendid spells.

By the power of magic and mantra, both body and shadow vanished. No one could see them, and the two officers walked inside.

They saw the royal ritual hall, broad, long, high, and great, standing in the victory court, its fire shining up to the sky. Mighty Thao Vaiyatal gathered his mind and recited spells on the palm-tree's summit in the middle of the blaze, the asura wearing the form of a yogi. Nilaphat spoke to the glorious son of the Wind-born one: "The younger brother of Phra Chakri sent us to destroy this rite, then plan the killing of the asura so his life ends. But if we kill him here inside the city, the fame will not spread. We should only ruin his magic, then go up and wait by the main road. When everyone in the three worlds knows, then we will kill him." Having spoken, he clapped his hands and mocked: "Hey, hey, glorious Vaiyatal. I am mighty Phra Kal and have come to take your vile life." As he spoke he displayed power with a roar that shook every direction. Asuraphat kicked and struck the palm-wood club, while the son of Phra Kal followed and struck the asura.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha fell down, hurt all over his body, and sprang up at once. He saw the battle-powerful monkey and the monkey who had taken yaksha form following him down to attack. Angry like final fire, the asura leapt to seize the palm-wood club, brandished it like a turning discus, and surged into battle, striking in turmoil.

Then the two great soldiers responded: Asuraphat retreated swiftly, and Nilaphat chased and struck after him. They fled and pursued by turns in confusion, each taking turns mocking the yaksha. Then the two mighty officers left the underworld city.

When they reached the narrow way, they hid beside the bright mountain-foot, in the wooded thickets near the road where the asura usually passed.

Then Thao Vaiyatal, skilled in war, when the enemies had fled from the city, was filled with resentment. He thought: "Bah, those two animals came and destroyed my rite. If they had not fled upward, they would have lost their lives." Thinking this, he ordered the ministers: "Do not delay. Prepare the army quickly. I will march to avenge this at once."

When the order was finished, he walked from the bright victory-court seat, mounted the jeweled palace, and went straight inside.

Then Weram, the great minister, received the powerful lord's command and hurried to arrange the army.

He mustered a fourfold battle formation, proud and brave. Demon lords mounted horses, holding spears raised in pride. Chariot lords rode war-chariots, holding bows and showing skill at the string. Elephant lords rode fierce, rut-wet elephants, carrying hook-knives and shifting to slash. Commanders arranged the troops, choosing strong and powerful fighters. Each was proud, brave, and skilled, holding every kind of weapon. They brandished them like glittering flame; officers and soldiers crowded beyond counting, all showing off their war-skill in grand uproar.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha, when the army arrangement was complete, came to bathe in the water.

He bathed his body in jeweled sprinkling water, cool and sweetly fragrant. He wore perfumes mixed with flower-garlands; the scent spread everywhere. His lower cloth had mirror-patterned borders; his garment was raised with lion-king designs. Fluttering and side panels had curved vine patterns. Dragon-scale armor was gem-set. Direction-plates, chest ornaments, war-chains, crystal belt, bracelets, raised armlets, and diamond rings adorned him. He wore jeweled crown, flower, and shining nine-gem ear ornaments. In his hand he grasped the palm-wood club and leapt to mount the splendid chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were shining nine gems, high and graceful with three crests, with dragon-form scrollwork. The throne lowered in jeweled tiers, with beasts, Garudas, and lions alternating. The pavilion seemed a heavenly mansion, its crest jeweled and gold-worked. It was harnessed to royal lions in a hundred pairs. Lothan shouted with ringing voice. High insignia, pipes, drums, trumpets, and gongs sounded in uproar. Soldiers shouted; elephants and horses roared in tumult. They broke through the earth and hurried onward.

Then the two battle-wise soldiers saw mighty Thao Vaiyatal bring the demon host upward. Nilaphat spoke to the brave son of the Wind-born one: "I will transform into an asura, like one of the people of great Lanka city, and use a trick to deceive the kumbhanda so he feels no suspicion. You follow my tracks. If you see me enter battle, help me break and kill the demon army and slay Vaiyatal the asura, so our fame remains in the world." Having spoken, he recited spells and changed his form into a yaksha. Wise Asuraphat recited a spell to hide himself from the soldiers' eyes.

When this was done, the son of Phra Kal walked out from the mountain rise and sat by the forest road, acting distressed, hungry, panting, and badly worn.

Then mighty Vaiyatal drove his chariot and saw an asura yaksha sitting there. He gave command and asked: "Why are you sitting here? Your manner looks sick and weak. What pain or weariness troubles you? From which division have you come, asura?"

Then Nilaphat, appearing as a yaksha, heard and answered: "I am a man of Lanka. Phiphek drafted me into the army, and I came with the monkey vanguard. They used me and beat me all the time. I suffered, grew thin, and lost heart. Food and eating were poor too, beyond endurance. So I fled, hoping to rely on Your Majesty with loyal heart. Meeting you is good fortune. I ask to report the truth: now Lord Bharata has sent the victorious monkey Nilaphat and Asuraphat down to victorious Kuru city to destroy the rite and make Your Majesty lose the power of the spells."
