Incantations of the Mouth-Washing Ritual
This tablet preserves six incantations from the Mis pi ("mouth-washing") ritual — the most important consecration ceremony in Mesopotamian religion. The Mis pi transformed a newly carved divine statue from inert wood and stone into the living dwelling of a god. Without this ritual, the statue was merely an artisan's product. After the mouth-washing, the divine image could eat, drink, smell incense, hear prayers, and speak oracles.
The theological paradox at the heart of the ritual was deliberate: the human craftsman carved the statue, but the incantation declares the image "born in heaven" — fashioned by the divine carpenter Nin-ildu, adorned by Anu, its mouth opened by Marduk and the seven sages of Eridu. The craftsman's hands were symbolically cut off during the ceremony. The sacred is created by denying the profane origin.
This tablet (K.2445) was copied for the library of Ashurbanipal (r. 669-631 BCE) at Nineveh. It is bilingual throughout — each line appears first in Emesal Sumerian (the liturgical dialect), then in Standard Babylonian Akkadian. A parallel text exists on BM.78532+ (identified by Finkel). The tablet contains: the Mouth-Opening Prayer (blessing the newly fashioned image), the central "Image Born in Heaven" incantation (bestowing prosperity and sovereignty upon the god), a processional prayer for Shamash, a sixfold purification litany for the god's path, a temple dedication by the builder, and a throne consecration. Together they describe the complete transformation: a carved thing becomes a god, its house becomes a temple, its seat becomes the seat of the fates.

Six incantations from the Mis pi (mouth-washing) ritual corpus, translated from a bilingual Sumerian-Akkadian tablet in Ashurbanipal's library at Nineveh (K.2445, British Museum). Neo-Assyrian period, 7th century BCE. The tablet is an upper fragment with holes; the obverse preserves two columns, the reverse two columns. A parallel text exists on BM.78532+ (identified by I.L. Finkel).
The Mis pi was the central consecration ritual of Mesopotamian religion. This tablet preserves the incantations spoken over the newly carved divine statue — from the opening of its mouth with honey and cedar, through the great "Image Born in Heaven" blessing that endows the image with sovereignty, cattle, orchards, and the tribute of mountains and seas, to the purification of every step the god would take and the consecration of its throne as the seat of the fates. The Royal Colophon (lines 25'-31' of reverse column 4) is the standard Ashurbanipal library colophon, largely restored from parallel copies.
