The Gaṇḍīstotragāthā is a praise poem by Aśvaghoṣa (c. 80–150 CE), the greatest poet of ancient Indian Buddhism and author of the Buddhacarita. The gaṇḍī is the wooden board struck to summon monks to assembly — one of the most distinctive sounds of monastic life.

The poem is structured as a vivid retelling of the Buddha’s conquest of Māra beneath the Bodhi tree, punctuated by transliterated Sanskrit onomatopoeia representing the actual sounds of the gaṇḍī being struck and of Māra’s army in battle. As the poem progresses, the gaṇḍī itself becomes the subject — no longer just a monastic instrument but the herald of the Dharma, calling all beings in all realms. At the poem’s heart stands a verse of extraordinary tenderness: the gaṇḍī is like a mother calling her children who have wandered outside at mealtime.

Preserved in the Tibetan translation in the Dege Tengyur (Tohoku D1149), stotra section. The Sanskrit original survives only in fragments. F.W. Thomas published a study of this text in JRAS (1903) from Sanskrit manuscripts; this is believed to be the first complete English translation from the Tibetan.

Homage to the Buddha.

I

He who went before to the foot of the Bodhi tree along the path of the sun —
gā gred, gā gred!
gā gā gred, gā ga gā gred,
ghana gha, ghana gha gred! —
upon those whose bodies were girded in armor,
upon the beautiful-bodied women
with their ḍhu ḍu pati, ḍhu ḍu ḍu bhiḥ, ḍhu ḍu bhiḥ! —
thus undisturbed, honored by gods and humans:
may that Lion of the Śākyas protect!

II

The bodied daughters of the desire-god,
laughing ka ha, ka ha, ka ka hā hā hī ti! —
the proud ones crying ta ṭi ta, ta ṭi ta, tī tā ṭa ṭā ti! —
the slaves babbling kud kud, bud bud, ku kū ci ta, ku ha ra ci ta! —
by hearing, fearless, all defilements were stilled:
may that Lord of Sages bring peace!

III

With arched eyebrows stirring,
with the play of desire’s arrows lowering the eyelashes,
the striving-bodied women whose limbs played among the branches,
speaking shyly with sidelong glances,
their words pleasing, melodious, and soft —
his mind was not disturbed.
To him who conquered desire — homage!

IV

The earth shaking everywhere,
sharp arrows covering the sky,
blazing flames and wrathful fires burning in every direction,
the waters churning,
Māra’s warriors shouting with javelins, swords, wheels, and sharpened blades —
all pacified by the weapon of loving-kindness.
Victorious Lord of Sages, may you protect!

V

Wrath born from dispersion, clear and gnashing,
proclaiming with terrifying thunder,
nets of rain-clouds binding the elephants’ foreheads in thick darkness,
sparks and sword-light blazing in all directions —
the flower-arrowed hosts destroyed in an instant.
O Buddha, protect!

VI

Near beautiful ears, with lotus-petal eyelashes,
their pupils swaying, overcast with passion,
Māra’s daughters — desirous, their lips like unquenched fire —
could not seduce the supreme sage
whose faults were all removed.
To him I bow!

VII

Whose mind was undisturbed — repelling the Māras,
those gnashing naked with teeth bared, tongues writhing,
bearing palms of glory in their hands,
with faces of elephants, horses, lions, and tigers —
while the desire-god, rootless, without essence,
was frightened by saṃsāra.
Removing sins, Protector of the World,
Lord of Sages, O Buddha — may you protect!

VIII

Whose mind was undisturbed amid earth, river-currents,
oceans, clouds, and thunder,
the diverse hundreds of Māra’s warriors,
fierce, with forms beyond count —
the flower-crowned one did not reckon them,
omniscient, free from desire,
the glorious Buddha hero, unchanging,
seizing the fears of sin — protect!

IX

Māra’s great army, swords in hand,
battle-axes, bows, short spears sharpened at the tips,
raining meteors, hurling fire,
shouting clear, terrifying cries —
his mind unmoved, like a mountain, unshaking,
the holy one sitting cross-legged,
seizing the fears of the three realms,
the Buddha hero, most brave —
I bow and pay homage!

X

Laughing high with aṭṭa ṭar!
sharp bells ringing fast,
spreading, gnashing, matted-haired,
one-eyed, the slaves — they could not conquer him.
The fierce paṭaha drum sounded clear,
and at Vulture Peak, to awakening,
the proud ones heard the clear paṭaha:
may the Buddha hero find happiness!

XI

Ko kaṇḍi rā ma ra ṇa hi, prati bhaya ku haraṃ,
darpa ṇa ṇe ḍaṃ raṇṇa ḍaṃ,
ḍomba ṇḍa mba ṇa ḍu ḍimba ṇa ḍa ha,
ḍhu ha ka ḍhu haṃ, straiṅ khala straiṅ khala straiṅ ma,
jambra ña jimbra ña ja jimbraṅ kha mu kha mu,
khu khu māṅ khuḥ, khu maṅ khuḥ, khu maṅ khuḥ, khu maṅ khu!

By the strength of the Ten Powers, Māra’s armies were crushed.
Fearless, honored by gods and humans —
Lion of the Śākyas, may you protect!

XII

He by whom Māra’s cloud-bodied pride was freed in the night,
and the lotus-groves of Māra’s daughters’ faces wilted,
who attained perfect awakening — like the moon,
like the autumn night-lily fully blooming:
here the herald of the Dharma proclaims.
This is the gaṇḍī of the Dharma King, the Blessed One.

XIII

For those who have not yet gained merit, who are unsatisfied,
whose minds enter the path of examination —
unceasingly, well-conducting them,
entering at the command of the Three Jewels,
again and again teaching living beings:
renowned throughout the maṇḍala of the directions,
the fierce Dharma gaṇḍī!

XIV

Like the sun triumphant over hosts of stars,
blazing here in the Victor’s teaching
against the tīrthika folk:
this gaṇḍī, the heart-ornament of the earth,
is renowned like the fierce cymbal of victory in battle.

XV

And you are not frightened —
ja mi ja mi, ḍhu ḍhu, ma ra ñi ja ra ñi ja,
ḍe na nā ḍi nā ḍe,
ḍoṃ ban ḍim ban ḍu dimpa na ḍa bha ḍa bhu ḍhu ḍhu bhaṃ,
nā ḍi bhan nā ḍi bhan ḍa ma,
ra ṇa ḍi ru ṇa daṃ ru ru ṇa ḍi ya ra la ba,
kha kha maṃ khaḥ, kha maṃ khaḥ, kha maṃ khaḥ!

By the strength of the Ten Powers, Māra’s armies were crushed.
People of the living world — behold!

XVI

The earth shaking, mountains trembling, great Mount Meru shaken,
hosts of gods and the radiance of spirits and every nāga king terrified,
the tīrthikas hearing the fierce gaṇḍī’s terrifying sounds are frightened,
while for the Buddhists it sounds the cause of peace in the four directions,
proclaiming to the Saṅgha:

This is the gaṇḍī, struck at the peak of the monastery,
making sounds like thunder-clouds.
Its voice today is pleasant —
like a tender mother, greatly delighted,
calling her children who have wandered outside
at mealtime.
That is the gaṇḍī.

XVII

Supreme in destroying the wheel of saṃsāra,
unexcelled by all the precious Buddha-qualities:
its sound equal to the great drum of the gods,
the gaṇḍī of great sound
completely destroys all sins.

XVIII

Honored by gods, asuras, and the great nāgas,
the Tathāgata who has approached supreme peace:
the gaṇḍī’s sound, equal to the great drum of deathlessness,
completely crushes the hearts of other tīrthikas.

XIX

Here, by striking this gaṇḍī,
humans, gods, and asuras are called.
Noble ones — listen to the Sugata’s gaṇḍī!

XX

The assembly of monks, gathered complete —
like clouds spreading when great elephants are terrified
at the season of danger —
turning back the destruction, anguish, and trembling fright of beings,
bringing peace, utterly annihilating
the pride of every tīrthika.
For the assemblies of sages, for the increase of dharmas:
by that gaṇḍī — may you protect!

XXI

May the supreme merit be accomplished!
For the people of this wavering world,
may it bestow the higher realms and liberation —
may sins not lead to the lower realms!
Like a bee sitting in the midst, making sound,
with joined palms I scatter flowers
at the lotus feet of the enemy of Māra —
may you protect!

XXII

Indra and the hosts of gods, scattering flowers with great devotion,
the sky filled with the ringing of cymbals,
famed for having descended from the heavens to earth,
long awaited:
the Blessed One, the great treasure of compassion —
by the supremely fierce gaṇḍī, may beings be protected!

XXIII

He who, just upon emerging from his mother’s womb,
walked seven steps of his own,
declaring the end of saṃsāra, speaking words of no small wisdom,
removing existence from all previous births:
may the Sugata’s gaṇḍī, which shatters darkness, be victorious!

XXIV

On the peaks of a thousand Sumerus, on the jewel mountains
radiant with precious light,
on the snow mountains, king of mountain lords,
in the human realm and the nāga world,
the lords of the deathless and the desire realm,
the rulers of the four continents, the sun and moon,
the lord of the asuras:
hearing the Sugata’s Dharma gaṇḍī,
all are called to the Sugata’s noble intention.

XXV

In all three realms, the many ugly classes,
the great proud elephants —
all with long fangs bared,
bearing signs of blazing vajra garlands —
all evil classes that come,
terrified by the wise master’s vajra HŪṂ:
the world proclaims, “The Conqueror has arisen!”
Bowing at his feet, adorned with the Buddha’s crown.

XXVI

Māra’s daughters — thousands of ear-ornaments,
eyes like the earth,
breasts firm and full,
with graceful gait — servants riding above them,
singing songs, beating drums swiftly,
coming unceasingly like four great rivers flowing to the ocean —
ṭuṃ ṭuṃ, bhraṃ bhraṃ!
Surpassing sounds proclaimed without cease —
that is the gaṇḍī itself.

XXVII

Having conquered Māra’s power,
displayed the great fearful deed, exhausted all faults,
attained the rank of omniscience,
most beautiful, endowed with all excellent qualities,
the Buddha of pure compassion:
may the fierce gaṇḍī, seizing sins,
shatter them for all humankind!

XXVIII

Brahmā became mute.
The teacher of the gods lost his pride.
Viṣṇu, the Sustainer, grew small of mind.
Fortunate Viṣṇu spoke nothing at all.
Whose qualities’ fame made the gods ashamed,
their limbs contracting:
may the Sage’s gaṇḍī —
the fearlessness of beings —
protect them from the lower realms!

XXIX

Brahmā, the thousand-eyed Indra, Viṣṇu,
the sun and moon, rākṣasas, yakṣas,
gandharvas, nāgas, kiṃnaras, asuras,
humans, Māra’s hosts, and hungry ghosts —
whoever rises, the ground blazing with golden light,
all the yellow-robed:
by the supreme Tathāgata teacher,
all without exception are called to hear the Dharma.

XXX

The tīrthikas of small and lowly intention are frightened,
while the Buddhists of surpassing, increasing wisdom
find their joy grows:
whose great qualities are gained, whose faults are exhausted —
may that gaṇḍī, always in the age of strife,
exhaust the sins of all existences!

XXXI

Paying homage according to proper ceremony,
walking the high path:
may it quickly exhaust all adverse forces,
confusion, delusion, and the haze of ignorance.
May the Sage’s Dharma gaṇḍī destroy them!

XXXII

O noble ones — may you shatter the fears born from existence!
By hearing the virtue of this,
Brahmā and the rest plunge to the depths of the earth,
the earth-holders tremble,
the earth goes beneath the earth,
the tīrthikas are terrified.
Those who strive to benefit others, pure of self,
the Buddhists — they quickly attain peace.
May the gaṇḍī gather them!
