This room opens with Rachel Harriette Busk's Sagas from the Far East (1873), an English version of two Kalmyk and Mongolian tale cycles made from earlier European, chiefly German, translations. The first is the Siddhi-kür, a Buddhist-framed cycle of stories told by a dead body endowed with magic powers to the man who must carry it in silence. Scholars trace it to the Indian Vetāla tales, though Busk does not say so. The second is the saga of Ardschi-Bordschi Khan and the throne of Vikramāditya. Busk's preface and notes are part of the book. Read it as a Victorian retelling at two removes from its sources, and read its tales for themselves.
