A Good Works Translation from RECAM II 203

A short Greek inscription from the Galatian region names Aurelius Helius, son of Domnus, as a temple-warden of Zeus under the Celtic-looking epithet Bussurigios. The text is not in the Galatian language, but it is a compact primary witness to Celtic religious names surviving inside local Anatolian Greek cult.

Translation

Aurelius Helius, son of Domnus, of the village of the Klossamenoi, temple-warden of Zeus Bussurigios, while living, built the monument for himself.

Translation Note

The formula ζῶν ἑαυτῷ means that Aurelius Helius built the monument for himself while he was still alive. The divine epithet is printed continuously by PHI/RECAM as Βουσσουριγίου, the genitive form after τοῦ Διὸς: "of Zeus Bussurigios." CIG 4102 gives an older version of the same inscription with the epithet damaged or restored as Βουσσουρι[τί]ου; the fuller PHI/RECAM text is followed here.

Object Note

PHI/RECAM records the inscription from Akçataş in northern Galatia, after 212 CE. It names a local village, the Klossamenoi, and describes Aurelius Helius as νεωκόρος, a temple-warden or cult-servant. The text is Greek, but the divine epithet is one of the small Galatian-Anatolian cult traces that preserve Celtic names under Greek religious forms.
