A Good Works Translation from RECAM II 191

A short votive inscription from northern Galatia names Zeus under the Celtic-looking epithet Souolibrogenos and says that the vow was made according to command. Together with the Bussurigios texts, it helps expose a small Galatian-Anatolian cultic layer that usually remains buried in inscription corpora.

Translation

With good fortune. A vow according to command. To Zeus Souolibrogenos, Most Great, as a vow: Valerius, son of Tibius, in the year 112.

Translation Note

The phrase κατὰ κέλευσιν means "according to command" and often points to a vow made in response to a divine instruction, dream, oracle, or cultic command. The inscription repeats the vow-word: first as εὐχὴ, "a vow," and then as the accusative εὐχήν, "as a vow" or "the vow." The divine name appears in the dative as Διὶ Σουωλιβρογηνῷ μεγίστῳ, "to Zeus Souolibrogenos, Most Great."

Object Note

PHI/RECAM records the inscription from Kızılcahamam, with uncertainty, in northern Galatia, dated 157 CE. The source year βιρʹ is rendered in the translation as year 112 without converting the local era in the body. The text is Greek, but the divine epithet belongs to the Galatian-Anatolian Celtic cult-name lane.
