This page lists the places where the transcription in this room could not be read and has been completed from a second text. The room gives the 1535 Coverdale Bible as the Text Creation Partnership (EEBO-TCP) transcribed it from the copy in Cambridge University Library (text A10349); that copy is stained and torn, and some of its letters, words and whole leaves cannot be read. The second text is Samuel Bagster’s page-for-page reprint of the same edition (London, 1838), “reprinted from the copy in the library of His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex,” read from the machine-read (OCR) text of its scan on archive.org (holyscriptures00cove). A supplied reading is not marked in the running text: it stands there as ordinary words, and each book’s colophon gives only the number. This page gives the place, the word as TCP has it and the reading supplied. A reading was supplied only where the reprint was certain, as set out below; every other place stays marked ⟨illegible⟩. No reading has been guessed or emended, and nothing has been taken from any other Bible.
How the readings were chosen
- The TCP text and the reprint’s OCR text were compared word by word; 888,962 of the 949,301 words of the TCP running text match the reprint word for word, setting aside capitals, punctuation and the marks of abbreviation.
- An illegible place in the TCP text was filled only where the three words before it and the three words after it match the reprint, in sequence, in the same book.
- The reprint’s word had to be legible. Its form in the OCR text was checked against how the 1535 print spells that form wherever the two texts agree. A reading was accepted only when one 1535 spelling accounts for at least 98% of the evidence, or 99% when the evidence is the neighbouring word. Where the OCR could stand for two spellings, such as y for yᵉ or yᵗ, or the for the or thē, the place stays marked ⟨illegible⟩.
- A fill of missing letters had to agree with every letter the TCP keyers could read in that word. A fill of a whole word took the reprint’s spelling.
- Marginal notes were not filled: the reprint moves them to the foot of the page, so they cannot be aligned with certainty.
The method was tested on legible text, by hiding letters and words whose readings are known and filling them blind: of 1,930 hidden letters, 1,885 were restored correctly, none wrongly and 45 refused; of 2,050 hidden words, 1,941 were restored correctly, 7 differently (for example with for wᵗ, a word the 1535 print abbreviates) and 102 refused. A separate check of 48 of the fills below against the reprint’s text found every one of them as the reprint reads it.
Totals
| Places | |
|---|---|
| Illegible places in the running text filled from the reprint | 1,018 |
| Illegible places in the running text left marked | 649 |
| Illegible places in the marginal notes left marked | 8,117 |
| Places in non-Latin script not transcribed by TCP, marked ⟨non-Latin script⟩ (Lamentations 130, Ezekiel 5, Psalms appendix 2) | 137 |
| Words supplied on lacking leaves | 12,186 |
| Words on lacking leaves left marked | 1,027 |
The counts of places left marked ⟨illegible⟩ leave out the appendix to the Psalms (see below), which holds a further 321 (297 in the text, 24 in the marginal notes); none of them was filled.
Leaves lacking in the copy transcribed
Where the comparison showed a stretch of the reprint with no counterpart in the TCP text, the stretch was checked: scan duplicates and unreadable pages of the reprint were set aside, and seven true losses remained. Their text is supplied in the pages between the marks ⟦ and ⟧, word by word under the same legibility rule, with the edition’s chapter and psalm divisions; the reprint’s running heads, folios and reference marks are left out, and the marginal notes of the lost leaves are not supplied.
| Passage | Reprint OCR lines | Words supplied | Marked ⟨illegible⟩ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genesis 1:1 - 2:17 | 2047–2232 | 1,087 | 63 |
| Judges 12:10 - 15:8 | 33079–33370 | 1,619 | 134 |
| Job 31:3 - 34:9 | 64253–64548 | 1,753 | 116 |
| Psalms CV:48 - CX:5 (Hebrew numbering 106:48 - 111:5) | 70979–71278 | 1,632 | 107 |
| Psalms CXVIII:9 - CXXVII:2 (Hebrew numbering 119:9 - 128:2) | 71622–72241 | 2,905 | 382 |
| 2 Maccabees 12:31 - 14:15 | 130218–130488 | 1,597 | 74 |
| Revelation 8:2 - 11:15 (Coverdale chapters VIII-XII) | 163857–164126 | 1,593 | 151 |
Psalm headings that the reprint’s OCR does not render (Psalms CXIX, CXXIIII and CXXV), and the section heads Iod and Pe of Psalm CXVIII, are not supplied; the psalms are still divided at those points.
Places where TCP marks pages as missing but no text is lost
TCP marks “2 pages missing” at four further places. At each the text runs on without a break when compared with the reprint, so nothing is marked there in the pages.
- Job: “…the stony rockes gaue me ryuers” / “of oyle: when I wente thorow…”
- Psalms: “…geue light in the night season.” / “At their desyre, there came quales,…”
- Psalms: “…of … LORDE, for the …” / “For I knowe yᵗ yᵉ LORDE…”
- Revelation (Apocalypse): “…a blacke horsse: and he that” / “sate on him, had a payre…”
Other editorial decisions
- 2 Corinthians: the TCP file has no chapter division before “Of the handreachinge vnto”; the reprint prints a chapter heading there, so Chapter 9 begins at that paragraph.
- Deuteronomy: the printed heading of chapter 34 numbers it 24; the heading is kept as printed and the chapter is numbered by its place.
- Isaiah: the printed heading of chapter 50 numbers it 1; the heading is kept as printed and the chapter is numbered by its place.
- Isaiah: the printed heading of chapter 62 numbers it 52; the heading is kept as printed and the chapter is numbered by its place.
- Psalms: leaves of another setting of the Psalms bound into the Cambridge copy (foliated Ccx–Ccxxi) are not part of the 1535 edition; they are given in full in an appendix to the Psalms page, unfilled.
Every fill
Each entry gives the place, the TCP word with • for each illegible letter (◊ for an illegible word, … for a longer stretch), the reading supplied, and the reprint’s OCR word with its line number in the full-text file of the scan on archive.org (holyscriptures00cove_djvu.txt).
