This room begins with Kokoro, Natsume Sōseki's complete 1914 novel in Aozora Bunko's new-character/new-kana Japanese transcription. It preserves the three-part, 110-section work and all 4,567 supplied ruby readings. The edition is not the orthography of the original newspaper serialization, an authorial manuscript, or an English translation: its exact 1991/1995/1996 base and proofreading history remains visible. One Sōseki novel opens a modern-fiction lane; it does not stand for every period, movement, region, gender, colonial relation, minority literature, or genre in modern Japanese writing.
