The Copper Scroll is unlike anything else in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Inscribed on sheets of copper rather than parchment, it is a treasure inventory — a precise, terse catalogue of sixty-four hiding places for vast quantities of gold, silver, tithe vessels, and sacred scrolls, buried across Judea and beyond. The language is Mishnaic Hebrew, closer to the spoken tongue than the literary Hebrew of the other scrolls. Whether it records real Temple treasure, the wealth of the Qumran community, or something else entirely remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of archaeology. Greek letters appear at intervals — perhaps code names, weights, or markers whose meaning is lost. This translation works directly from the Hebrew transcription of García Martínez and Tigchelaar.

In the ruin in the Valley of Achor, under the steps going east, forty cubits: a chest of silver and its vessels. Weight: seventeen talents. KEN.
In the funerary monument, in the third course of stones: bars of gold — one hundred.
In the great cistern in the courtyard of the peristyle, in its floor recess, sealed with sediment, opposite the upper opening: nine hundred talents.
In the mound of Kohlit: tithe vessels — jugs and ephods. All the tithe, and the seventh storehouse — a second tithe, unfit. Its opening is at the edge of the channel from the north, six cubits from the immersion pool. CHAG.
