Before the Flood, when the Watchers descended to the daughters of men, they sired offspring unlike anything else on earth — the Nephilin, the giants, creatures of flesh and violence too large for the world to contain. The Book of Giants is their story: their hungers, their dreams, the terror that breaks upon them when judgment is written in the stars. It survives in fragments from Qumran Cave 4, scattered across five manuscripts. The pieces do not form a seamless whole — they are shards of a longer narrative, now mostly lost. What remains is extraordinary: a courtroom in heaven, a garden burning, Enoch summoned to carry the sentence, and the giants weeping on the earth. The text was later taken up by the Manichaeans, who saw in the giants a myth of entrapment in matter. The Qumran community saw in it a warning about the wages of transgression. Both read its darkness clearly. This translation works directly from the Aramaic transcription of García Martínez and Tigchelaar.
I. The Watchers and Their Children (4Q203, 4Q531)
The earth produced all grain, all trees, all the sheep and small animals of the field, all the creeping things of the earth. And they consumed all of it. Every harsh deed and every disobedient word — male and female, and among the humans [...] the humans [...]
The giants and the Nephilin were born. And they defiled themselves. [...] They sired them. [...] the giants, to whom it was not enough — not for them, nor for their sons. [...] They sought to eat in great abundance. [...] The Nephilin destroyed it.
[...] To Ahiram and to [...] and to Anael and to Baraqel [...] to Naаmel and to [...] and to Ammiel. [...] All these are the giants. And what [...] to you, that you killed [...]? Have not all of these gone by the sword? [...] as great rivers against [...] against you.
II. The Dream of the Garden (4Q530, Col. ii)
Concerning the death of our souls — all his companions. And Ohyah made known to them what Gilgamesh had said to him. And [...] I feared, and the sentence against his life was spoken. And the Great One cursed the princes. And they rejoiced over him, the companions. And he returned and went [...] upon him. Then both of them dreamed dreams.
The sleep fled from their eyes. They arose [...] from among them and arose [...] their eyes. And they came to [...] their dreams.
And he spoke in the assembly of his companions, the Nephilin: "[...] In my dream I saw this night: [...] gardeners, and they were watering, and great roots issued from their trunks. Then Ohyah, the brother of Ahyah, acknowledged it and spoke before the giants:
"I also saw something astonishing in my dream this night: The Ruler of the heavens came down to earth, and thrones were erected, and the Great Holy One sat down. A hundred hundreds served him, a thousand thousands stood before him. And behold, the books were opened, and the sentence was proclaimed. The sentence was written in the book, recorded in the inscription — for all the living and for all flesh. Upon [...]"

Then all the giants and all the Nephilin were afraid. And they called to Mahawai, and he came to them — the giants — and they sent him to Enoch, the distinguished scribe.
