The Wiles of the Wicked Woman is a sapiential poem from Qumran Cave 4, personifying evil as a seductress — a dark counterpart to Lady Wisdom in Proverbs. She inhabits the deep places of darkness, sets traps for the righteous, and leads the upright into the pit. The poem draws heavily on Proverbs 7 and the Strange Woman tradition. A single fragment survives, remarkably well preserved. This translation works directly from the Hebrew transcription of García Martínez and Tigchelaar.
[...] She brings forth vanity, and in [...] she seeks out errors always, and sharpens the words of her mouth [...] And she flatters with mockery, and jests together in vain. Her heart prepares traps, and her kidneys set snares. Her eyes are defiled with wickedness. Her hands grasp the pit. Her feet go down to act wickedly and to walk in guilt [...]
The foundations of darkness — and a multitude of sins are in her wings. [...] darkness of night, and her garments [...] Her coverings are shadows of twilight, and her adornments are diseases of the pit. Her beds are couches of the pit [...] The depths of the pit are her lodgings, her couches are beds of darkness. And in the heart of the night are her tents. From the foundations of gloom she pitches her dwelling, and she camps in the tents of silence, in the midst of eternal fire.
She has no inheritance among all those who shine brightly.
She is the beginning of all the ways of wickedness. Woe! Woe to all who inherit her, and ruin to all who hold her. For her ways are ways of death, and her paths are tracks of sin. Her trails lead astray to wickedness, and her pathways are guilt of transgression. Her gates are gates of death — at the entrance of her house, Sheol proceeds. All who enter her shall not return, and all who inherit her shall go down to the pit.
She lies in ambush in secret places. [...] In the streets of the city she veils herself, and at the gates of the town she stations herself, and there is none to restrain her from her incessant fornication. Her eyes scan hither and thither, and she raises her eyelids wantonly — to spot a righteous man and overtake him, and a noble man, to trip him up. The upright — to turn them from the way. And the righteous chosen ones — from keeping the commandment. Those of steady heart — to make foolish with wantonness. And those who walk upright — to change the statute. To make the humble rebel against God, and to turn their steps from the ways of justice. To bring presumption into their hearts, so that they do not tread in the paths of uprightness. To lead mankind astray into the ways of the pit, and to seduce the sons of men with smooth words.
