This shelf begins with two complete public-domain English collections. James S. Gale translates fifty-three supernatural narratives attributed to Im Bang and Yi Ryuk, while H. N. Allen combines legends and literary tales with late nineteenth-century descriptive chapters on Korea. Both volumes preserve important witnesses, but their English wording, romanization, selection, commentary, and period assumptions belong to named editors and translators. Neither should be treated as unmediated communal speech or as a substitute for Korean-language editions and living traditions.
