The Rímur of Sturlaug

A seven-ríma Old Icelandic cycle based on the first twenty chapters of Sturlaugs saga starfsama — the saga of Sturlaug Ingólfsson, nicknamed Starfsami, "the Industrious." The cycle belongs to the older stratum of rímur composition and survives primarily in AM 603, 4to (A), with lacunae supplied from AM 610 D (B) and AM 145, 8vo (C); a fourth copy is in Stockholm 23 mbr., 4to (D). The text follows the edition in Rímnasafn Vol. I (ed. Finnur Jónsson).

The narrative covers Sturlaug's youth in Naumdal, the rivalry of Earl Hringr's daughter Ása between King Haraldr and the young hero, the arrival of the dangerous outsider Kolr the Stocky, a series of holmgang duels, and ultimately an expedition to Bjarmland to steal the sacred Urnarhorn from the idol temple of Þórr — guarded by a great priestess and a floor of poisoned blades. Along the way Sturlaug acquires his mentor, the old wise woman Wefreyja, who gives him a magic sword and wise counsel at every turning; his loyal companions Hrólf Nefi, Svipuðr, Fralmar (initially an enemy), and the young Áki; and finally the kingdom of Þrándheim itself.

Ríma I

Mansöngr. The old poet reflects on age and inspiration. King Haraldr of Þrándheim. Earl Hringr of Hamarkaupangr and his daughter Ása. Ingólfr of Naumdal and his son Sturlaug. The young companions — Jökull, Guttormr, Sigvatr, Áki, Þorgautr. The wise woman Wefreyja. Ingólfr urges Sturlaug to seek a wife. Ása refuses the king; a three-winter betrothal is set.

Now shall I brew Berling's wine
and let it ring out before bold men,
for the horn's murmur of Herjan [Odin]
has rested long enough.

He who wants to pour the world's riches
into Óski's [Odin's] lands —
nothing else will serve him
but to mix Óski's wine.

And though the barrel-stave at home
must sit indoors every day,
still the news flies out
from the serpent of the fleet.

Men blame me for that —
that I went out to the tides;
the hero lies fast in his cottage
and knows nowhere to ride.

Once my father was gentle,
then I went so widely;
now delay holds me a whole day,
fashioning Durnir's oak [verse].

though winter leaves fewest sports;
none takes this from himself
who keeps his own gift.

Dofri's speech-cloud [verse] may mend that

the Frey of the ships in speech;
gold-mouthed is he, known from farmsteads,

in Haraldr's realm;
he had weathered every battle,
eager to go to mass.

in the lava-thong's fair meadows;
one lady, so it is told,
he had gotten to wife.

she gladdened the troops of men;
by her grew up a young maiden —

the lady knew how to adorn herself;
none in Norway was like her —

given to help men;
north he lived in Naumdal,

gold-man from the gold;
both gentle and well-liked was he,
he lived at Solarheimr.

Gríma was his gold-wreath wife,
she gladdened the cheerful people;
by her grew up two heirs —
Jökull and Guttormr they are called.

now I call him Þorgautr;
he lived on one island,
man of the serpent's hall.

renowned among men he seemed;
Sigvatr the boys name him,

the lady had a fair son,
whom most call Áki.

these set their sports
against Ingólfr's bright heir.

besides that, the warriors tested their strength,
riding in dust and shooting.

scarcely were found companions
their equals in boldness.

Then the brothers made their league,
breakers of green swords;
they performed worthy spear-play —

Wefreyja is her name, the well-woman,
she always helped the honored.

the men led the Glamma horses
to be driven from the enclosures.

the men let the wolf-planks [ships] slide
from the skids into the sea.

twice five stout longships
could be counted moored at the beach.

the men let the eastern waters
surge and swell beneath them.

the Ulflings will then have
to meet death widely.

nothing stood against the men then —

but the tale must go back to Þrándheim
where Haraldr rules.

the prince had lost his queen,
the lady was mourned long.

so the ring-wind's pride
would turn away sorrow.

"her kinsman may give her to you, prince;

sets out from home for the journey;
fine goods and the fair lady awaited,

Ríma II

Mansöngr. The love sickness of the poet. Kolr the Stocky rides from the forest and demands Ása from Earl Hringr. He kills Herningr. King Haraldr summons Ingólfr and Sturlaug. Sturlaug agrees to fight Kolr — for Ása's hand. The wedding of Sturlaug and Ása. Ása sends Sturlaug to Wefreyja. The old wise woman gives Sturlaug a magic sword and two companions. They ride to the Elbe for the duel. Kolr arrives.

from Grímnir's water-serpent [the poem];
Gunnlǫð's must be kept [the mead of verse],
seized by her other treasure.

I got nothing for men there
clearly from the horn's story;
hard has it been — a burden laid —
at every moment to lie low.

What now brings the barrel-glad one?
His mind seemed widely to reign;
but Hringr was standing outside
at play one day.

4.
They saw a strong shield-breaker
riding out of the forest;
the hero had a hooked spear,
wise in spear-strife.

This one towered above the men,
a broad cloak over his shoulders;
all in chain-mail he was dark,
his gear was prepared.

The warrior rode very hard —
no one recognized him;
many of the folk fled,
first going to the earl.

This one greeted the king;
Hringr wished to know:
"What is your name, warrior?
Tell me such plainly."

The man declared, fated to good fortune,
the prince with true words:
"I was formerly called Kolr the Stocky —
known to all men."

"Give me Ása," said the wretch,
the Gylfr's helper [warrior];
"else I will stick a spear in the place
where it comes out through the prince's shoulders."

Hringr received a blow of calm —
said to the breaker of rigging:
"She was betrothed to King Haraldr;
that pledge must hold."

"I will buy her free from the king's peace,"
Kolr said from anger;
he then fixed the betrothal on the goddess [Ása],
the prince sits silent.

"Tell Haraldr, Hringr,"
said the thrower of the serpent-meadow,
"I challenge him to the holmgang,
if he wants to have the maiden.

I intend to prepare hell for the prince,
if he dares come and find us;
live now, lord, well and safe,
and greet the wise woman."

The warrior got away to the forest,
who knew how to harm most things;
the kinsman-ruler told all this
and found it worse than ill.

The wise one thought the peril greatest
in fighting that hound [Kolr];
men thought fortune would fail
if the maiden escaped to him.

Herningr is his name — the hero so,
who knew how to wound men;
the warrior had his home in Raumsdalr,
he reddened spears always.

He had been trusty before in lawsuits,
the fighter bests the lean one;
this one went east to the Elbe
for the dear prince.

Warriors stirred up a sword-storm;
thought was sharp with blood;
Herningr had to give his life —
so ended their encounter.

The king heard of the warrior's fall,
said his way was shrinking;
anger with the prince swelled most,
he speaks so to the bold man.

The prince speaks and makes a good plan —
he sat near and reliable in counsel:
"Now word must be sent to Ingólfr
and to Sturlaug both.

I bid these worthy men to a feast,"
the giver of the leek's glow said;
"and if warriors come seeking me at home,

Kolr was to be found quickly at the king's word —
who knew best how to enter;
he goes north to Naumdal,
useful warrior to find.

at the prince's true message;
a fine troop followed the warriors —

warriors bore shield and sword
and the shirt of ancient Hogni.

men came to the king —
he received them with kindness.

most were joyful there;
the king is so dear to men
that it seemed a great thing to serve him.

The king offered the men the glow of horns [mead];
the prince forgets no one;
all ready, the men there
make merry by the quiet king.

The prince made himself glad,
exchanged shield-words:
"Sturlaug, go into battle for me —
this I will greatly repay."

"He needs deed and manly endurance
who will be useful to a young woman;
whoever goes to the holmgang against Kolr
and proves his mettle."

The warrior seemed not to come near to that:
"I am skilled at leaving that assembly —
unless you give me those fetters
you earlier took from Hringr."

Þundr [Odin / the king] seemed next most shamed
by Óski of the tent [Odin];
but he sent the fetters forward —
the father and son departed.

The king's honor seemed to diminish —
he had lost his clear wits;
the prince sat afterwards in anger,
grief played about his heart.

Sorrow burned hot in the mind;
it will not end sorrow soon;
Ingólfr rode with his company
to find the wise earl.

the wave's surge gladdened the honored,
they had much in counsel.

Sturlaug revealed the ruler's words,
the short-whittler of Handir's gravel:
"King, give me the ring-lass,
I intend to enjoy her."

Hringr was glad, and the golden Bil,
men confirmed this;
then they prepared for the wedding —
he bought the happy swanness.

no one will object to this;
the hero betrothed the ring-Gná —

and the wise Hringr did not spare

who calls you to the holmgang at hand,
the shakers of blue spears?"

against the bright fire of the flood;
Wefreyja is my foster-mother —

then the dear mead-woman

The warriors then took the bane-staffs [swords],
ready to perform boldness;
the ring-hewer and his twelve brothers
went to the old woman's home.

and kissed her kindly;
she threw the knowing warrior
hard away with force.

thrower of Odin's tent [warrior],
who has done me quick shame?
I shall repay this."

Ása the fair is given to me —

"change all the plans;
why was I not bid to the wedding?

wise in most tricks;
she then stroked Sturlaug's body
with the stiff magic horses [her hands working a charm].

Þundr [Sturlaug] seemed next most tested —
the Þundr of the hard spears;
she then gave him a good troop
and did nothing more.

She told all of his journey
and so what he wants to accomplish;
she gave the wise gift — a sword —
to the wise heir of Ingólfr.

the blade-forest-finder —;
the falling file of the ground's whetstone [the sword],
it fell reddened from the blow.

The warrior thanks the ring-Gná [Wefreyja];
I say it was right that she served;
she got him for companions two
bold heirs of hers.

"My foster-son shall go along;
he will not shy from the fetters;
wonderfully eager in spear-weather —
best at riding at the enemy."

She gave her foster-son his gifts,
trusting that lore would teach him;
it was weighty in counsel for the warriors —
they rode away from her.

Svipuðr parted from the jewel-Bil;
they will have victory;
east they came to the Elbe —
they pitched one tent.

Men gladdened the horn-Rín;
here the time was short
when Kolr came with his warrior
to the holmgang, the evil one.

Kolr was not glad when facing the warrior,
when he saw the company shielded;
that was the home of the tent-station
where the warriors had pitched camp.

Then great words passed between them —
the men of both sides;
near now shall be the ship's battle —
sinking down to the ground.

Ríma III

Mansöngr. The poet on the third tale. The duel with Kolr the Stocky. Svipuðr's dark-bag trick. Sturlaug receives Wefreyja's sword. Kolr is killed, his body cloven in two. Wefreyja feasts them. Fralmar arrives and challenges Sturlaug. Hrólf Nefi's wrestling match against the Blámaðr berserk.

I can barely carry Sónar must [poetic mead]
up into the air, though I seek this —
Baldr's song of Gríðr's verse.

There shall the third play be told,
if the thanes wish to hear it,
where those warriors met
to redden the pale spears.

Kolr seemed scarcely settled then —
the warrior immediately asks from anger
that the pale bank's stake was thrust in:
"without my will this tent was put here."

He got back an answer quickly —
out came Sturlaug to meet him:
"I care nothing for the wretched wretch —
I have pitched our tent.

A noble one sent me —
he himself wants to go to the holmgang with you,
to free both prince and woman,
if you want to wage the spear-storm.

you have no claim to her;
the woman does not want to see you —

evil Kolr, as the stories tell:
"Here shall be a sword-meeting —
I never heard such a wonder.

though many hide it from themselves;
no brand bites me —
you shall be hewn before the wolves."

Kolr's words are not good,
he said what the folk should not hear;
let none recount that longer —
he got another place on his hide.

Kolr sat then with his warriors,
testing provisions and drinking wine;
Svipuðr came to the warriors there —
he will play something for them.

The warrior shook a dark bag —
the evil wretch sees all this;
smoke comes, the sun clears bright —
a hard fate shall come to them from the woman.

"Get away, wicked slave,"
Kolr — hardly gentle in words —
"you can get yourself quick shame" —
the shield-Týr went away.

But when the goddess's day-time passed,
the warrior was glad to wake;
the steel-Týr, eager for battle —
Sturlaug came first to the holmgang.

Hrólf Nefi ran through the forest —
he was eager for spear-strife;
the warrior got the root-club,
boldly went back to the holmgang.

At last it was that the evil
wretched Kolr woke with his troop;
growling up like a bull —
he went to the holmgang and seemed late.

Both sides stepped on the broad field,
they bore the sharp fire of Fiolnir [swords];
helm and mail, the hill-sky [shields];
here shall be a new battle.

Kolr spoke to the thorn-tree [man]:
"Show me that sword, trusty one —
will you show the sword you have,
boy, that you carry for the battle-task?"

The hero shows the snake of the valley [sword];
for him there was no standing in sorcery;
both edges he breathed on —
the warrior laughed heartily at that.

"I never cared for that trick —
it bites nowhere on any land;
go back and defend yourself —
you may send the lady to me."

Sturlaug does not wait to take him:
"I will cleave your skull in two,
so that in front of your enemies it flies —
here there shall be spear-din."

Wefreyja's fine gift he took
and turned it at once toward the spear-Gautr [Kolr];
Kolr could not shout against that
and immediately knew the sword.

"How did you get the fire of the helm-valley [sword]?
One may call this cursed harm —
from here I will be sent to Hel
when the blade gets into your hands."

Good thing they got then — the spear's root;
Kolr goes with boldness to meet it;
each struck the other a heavy blow —
neither went far before the other.

The men thought the fight hard —
the swords were not spared;
the shields were cut from their shoulders —
the bite of what the old woman gave was good.

Sturlaug fought with a strong mind,
trusting in the gold-forest [Wefreyja's gift];
the blow came into the helm's midst —

everything went down into the falcon-path;

prepared at home for this journey;
the warriors went to find the clothing-norn [Wefreyja],
the old woman seemed well versed in counsel.

The worthy one knew the powerful Gerd
firmly all of their journey;
it did not seem well to the woman —
which of the warriors should get Hel [death].

"I would sooner see you both safe,"
the wise ring-Gná said;
"his like in boldness is hard to find —
I know not how it will go."

the lady was not quiet about this;
Svipuðr followed the warriors faithfully —

had been feeding the wolf's prey;

the mighty one sought the mother's ride [verse],
the glory had to be made ready.

there was nothing to ask about that —
none of the warriors will say otherwise —
if there were gladness among the swans.

The mighty land of the Máfill's horses [poem]
missed the glow of the ring-Njǫrðr;
it gives to many a gifted fjord,

Sturlaug meets Hornnefja, who gives him the Nefjunaut. A troll-woman killed. They arrive at a fortress.

Colophon

Sturlaugsrímur (The Rímur of Sturlaug) is a seven-ríma Old Icelandic cycle retelling the first twenty chapters of Sturlaugs saga starfsama. The cycle survives in four manuscripts: AM 603, 4to (A, primary; lacunae in Ríma IV.48 — VI.45 supplied from B and C); AM 610 D — Jón Gissurarson's copy (B); AM 145, 8vo — Jón Finnsson's rimabók (C, fragmentary); Stockholm 23 mbr., 4to (D, possibly a copy of A or a sister manuscript). The cycle corresponds to chapters 1–20 of the saga, often in condensed form and with some variant names.

The story follows Sturlaug Ingólfsson of Naumdal: his upbringing among bold companions, his courtship of Ása from Earl Hringr, the arrival of the dangerous Kolr the Stocky, a series of holmgang duels, and ultimately an expedition to Bjarmland to seize the sacred Urnarhorn from the idol temple of Þórr — guarded by a great gydja. The wise woman Wefreyja gives Sturlaug her magic sword and the Nefjunaut (a throwing-spear). After many battles, Sturlaug becomes king of Þrándheim and then conqueror of Bjarmland and the Hundings.
