Māori literature is not one undifferentiated store of “Polynesian mythology.” It grows through te reo Māori, iwi and hapū histories, whakapapa, whenua, wai, performance, manuscript and print, and the authority of particular transmitters. This first Māori room opens with the Te Arawa/Rotorua account of Hinemoa, preserved in H. J. Fletcher's complete 1907 learner reader. The work is historical Māori source-language coverage with extensive English notes and vocabulary, not a continuous translation. Begin with the introduction and reader's guide, and keep the named Te Arawa relationships visible rather than treating one local tradition as the voice of every Māori community.
