This room begins with Hinemoa: With Notes and Vocabulary, a complete 1907 historical reader containing a Te Arawa/Rotorua narrative, whakapapa, forty paragraphs of English notes, and a 327-entry story vocabulary. Its own notes trace the text through an unnamed descendant of Hinemoa who recited at Mokoia in December 1849, G. S. Cooper as recorder, Pirikawau as interpreter, an 1851 Auckland printing, and H. J. Fletcher as the 1907 editor and teaching apparatus maker. “Oral Literature” here names a transmission history, not anonymous folklore: the story remains attached to people and place, while the printed witness is read critically as one historical form of it.
