Hutsul Trough-Making — Włodzimierz Szuchiewicz

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

This short source section comes from Włodzimierz Szuchiewicz's 1902 ethnographic work on Hutsul life. It describes trough-making as a domestic wooden craft: wood choice, rough hewing, hollowing, smoothing, the special tool called tesłycia, and the price range for finished troughs.

The witness is Polish ethnography with embedded Hutsul/Rusyn craft terms. It is translated as a historical source, not as modern craft instruction.

Trough-Making

A trough-maker makes wooden basins or troughs, koryta, from birch or
sycamore-maple wood, or from aspen, trepeta. Beech wood is not used for this,
because it splinters.

The maker rough-hews the cut log with an axe, then hollows out the log with a
chisel, trims it with a drawknife on the shaving horse, and finally smooth-hews
it on the ground (fig. 165) with the so-called tesłycia (fig. 166). The
tesłycia resembles a hammer in shape, with its end, the fist, turned into a
curved oval blade (fig. 166a).

The price of troughs, according to size and material, is from one to three
gulden.

Source route: Internet Archive identifier huculszczyzna01szucgoog; source-page images checked at printed pages 296-297.

Blood Rule: this English translation was made from the Polish source-language
witness. OCR was used for navigation and transcription support, while the
printed-page images controlled the unit boundary and hard terms. No existing
English translation was used as the translation base.

Rights posture: the underlying 1902 source is public-domain-era under the
library's United States operating posture; Szuchiewicz died in 1915. The
English translation is a new local translation.

Source-language note: this is a Polish ethnographic witness with embedded
Hutsul/Rusyn craft terms. The translation keeps koryta, trepeta,
tesłycia, and fist visible because they mark the source's technical
vocabulary.

Currency note: złr. is rendered here as gulden, the Austro-Hungarian florin
currency context of the printed source.

Source Text: 2. Korytarstwo

The text below is a lightly corrected reading witness from the OCR and
the source-page images. It is not a full diplomatic edition.

2. Korytarstwo.

Korytár robi niecki — korytá, z brzozowego lub jaworowego drzewa
albo z osiki — trepeta; bukowego drzewa do tego nie używają, bo
ono kłuje się; przeciętą kłodę obciosuje robotnik siekierą z
grubszej trzaski, poczem wydłubuje kłodę dłutem, obciosuje
ośnikiem na kobyłce, a w końcu wyciosuje na gładko na ziemi
(f. 165) tak zw. tesłycią (f. 166). Tesłycia podobna kształtem do
młotka, którego koniec — fist, zamieniony w zakrzywione owalne
ostrze (f. 166 a).

Cena niecek, zależna od wielkości i materyału, wynosi od
1—3 złr.
