The Fourth King of the Third Dynasty of Ur
Šu-Suen ruled Ur as the fourth king of its Third Dynasty, on the throne for roughly a decade around 2037 to 2029 BCE in the conventional middle chronology, the successor of Amar-Suena and the predecessor of Ibbi-Suen, the dynasty's last king. His own inscriptions remember him chiefly for building a wall against the Amorites, called Muriq-Tidnim, after turning back Amorite troops advancing into his kingdom's territory; one door-socket inscription below (no. 17) records the wall and the temple he built in its aftermath. Another tablet (no. 03) recounts a campaign against the Šimaškian lands to the east and describes a gold statue Šu-Suen fashioned from its booty and dedicated to the god Enlil.
This volume gathers the 193 inscriptions of Šu-Suen preserved in the Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Royal Inscriptions (ETCSRI), each with either a published English translation or, where none yet exists, an honestly marked gap. Twenty-nine are the king's own building and votive dedications, stamped or incised on door sockets, bricks, clay tablets, stone vessels, a weight, a mace head, a platter given to his mother Abi-simti, and beads belonging to his consorts Kubatum and Ti'amat-bašti, recovered from Nippur, Ur, Girsu, Umma, Adab, Ešnunna, Larak, and elsewhere. The remaining 164 are cylinder-seal inscriptions cut for officials in the king's service — scribes, temple administrators, an overseer, a cook, a captain among them — each naming Šu-Suen as royal overlord in the standard formula and its bearer as his servant, rather than recording an act of the king's own; they are gathered here as this volume's second part.
The English text below is ETCSRI's own published translation, reproduced verbatim and reformatted from an interlinear display into continuous reading prose; where a line is too damaged, or a text has no translation yet, that gap is marked in place rather than filled. Most of these inscriptions are short: a royal titulary, a building or dedication formula, a servant's name and title, rarely more. This volume takes its place on the library's Ur III shelf beside the editions of Ur-Namma, Šulgi, Amar-Suena, and Ibbi-Suen — the dynasty's other four kings — and beside its two companion volumes on Gudea of Lagaš, whose own dynasty at Girsu preceded the Third Dynasty of Ur.

Part I. Royal Building and Votive Inscriptions
Šu-Suen's own building and votive dedications: temples raised for Enlil, Ninlil, Nanna, Šara, and Annunītum his spouse; the wall Muriq-Tidnim built against the Amorites and the temple dedicated in its wake (no. 17); a gold statue from the booty of a campaign in the Šimaškian lands (no. 03); and smaller personal offerings — a weight, a mace head, beads belonging to his consorts Kubatum and Ti'amat-bašti, and a platter given to his mother Abi-simti.

For Enlil, the king of all lands, his master.
Even the young men who evaded the battle and took refuge like birds in their cities could not escape his hand. He shrieked at their cities like an Anzu-bird. He reduced their cities and settlements to ruin mounds. He destroyed their walls completely. He blinded all the young men of the cities he had conquered, and made them serve in the orchards of Enlil and Ninlil and in the orchards of the great gods. He presented the female workers of the cities he conquered to the textile mills of Enlil and Ninlil and to the temples of the great gods. He offered all the cattle, sheep, and the animals that he... in the temple of Enlil and Ninlil, and in the temple of the great gods.
He filled numerous big leather sacks with gold, silver, nir - stone, and..... He loaded copper and tin, and items fashioned from bronze on numerous pack-asses. He donated (all these items) to the temple of Enlil and Ninlil, and to the temple of the great gods eternally.
Then Šu-Suen, the powerful king, king of Urim, king of the four quarters, fashioned his own statue from the gold of the Šimaškian lands taken by him as booty. He dedicated it to Enlil, his master, for his well-being. Whoever gives order to perform a misdeed against this (statue), erases its inscription and writes his own name on it, destroys handiwork, may Enlil, the lord of all lands, Ninlil, the lady of all gods, curse this man!
May Ninurta, the powerful warrior of Enlil, be the commissioner of this (curse)!

Part II. Seals of the King's Servants
Cylinder-seal inscriptions naming Šu-Suen as overlord rather than as author, in the standard formula: the king's titulary followed by an official's name, father, and title, and the declaration that he is the king's servant. One seal (no. 2036add), dedicated by an official named Babara, preserves only its opening line in translation; the remainder of the inscription awaits ETCSRI's translation and the gap is marked in place.

Source and license. This edition reproduces the English translations of the Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Royal Inscriptions (ETCSRI), an Oracc project directed by Gábor Zólyomi at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (http://oracc.museum.upenn.edu/etcsri/), fetched 2026-08-07. The Oracc site states its content is "released under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license"; the project's own machine-readable data files carry the further statement "This data is released under the CC0 license" (https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/). Both statements are recorded here; this edition credits ETCSRI and Gábor Zólyomi regardless of which license term governs a given file, per academic courtesy and per the Good Work Library's own attribution practice.
What this edition is. The English text above is ETCSRI's own published translation of every royal inscription of Šu-Suen, fourth king of the Third Dynasty of Ur, in its corpus (193 texts), reproduced complete and verbatim from the project's HTML reading editions and reformatted from an interlinear word-by-word display into continuous reading prose. No word has been altered, paraphrased, or supplied by this library. Ellipses, question marks, and bracketed uncertainties are the source edition's own markers for damaged or doubtful text; where a text has no published translation yet, that gap is noted in place rather than filled. Untranslated single-word oddities native to the source data are reproduced exactly as ETCSRI's markup has them rather than silently corrected, since this is a source-text intake rather than a Good Works Translation. One honest gap is noted in place: the seal inscription no. 2036add (Šu-Suen 2036add / CDLI Seals 006011) has a published translation for its opening line only; its remaining lines await ETCSRI's translation.
Composite identification. The standard scholarly editions of this material are the RIME volumes (The Royal Inscriptions of Mesopotamia, Early Periods, University of Toronto Press); each text above carries its RIME number where assigned and its ETCSRI composite ID (Q-number), under which the full transliteration, morphological analysis, exemplar list, and any Hungarian translation can be found at ETCSRI's own site.
