This shelf gathers the folklore and religious traditions of the Tai-speaking peoples of Thailand and Laos. Nineteenth-century English writers often called the people of northern Siam, the old kingdom of Lanna around Chiang Mai, "the Laos"; the titles of historical editions keep their own names for the country. The Thai Ramakien has its own room on the Hindu shelf, beside the other Ramayanas.
