Yielding Words of the Charm-Singer

The Luovutussanoja — Yielding Words, or Words of Relinquishment — are the tietäjä's direct commands to disease and evil spirits to release their grip on the patient's body. Where other charm categories investigate, diagnose, or bind, these words simply demand departure. The spirits addressed are named openly: Hiisi, Lempo, Perkele, Saatana — the great adversaries of Finnish folk-cosmology, here reduced to bullied tenants being evicted from flesh they have no right to inhabit.

The rhetorical strategy escalates through the sequence. The early charms threaten violence — grinding teeth in a mortar, crushing tongues with a pestle. The middle charms invoke cosmic precedent: once the fortress-gates of heaven shook loose, the iron hinges gave way, the sky cracked open; so too must this affliction yield. The later charms turn intimate and contemptuous: "Your lineage is known — mine is greater. My skin is human. My bosom raised a child." The final charms invoke Kave the ancient liberator, who freed the Moon from its iron prison and the Sun from its stone cage.

Shall I set myself to it,
Shall I go, shall I be able
To rub away this Hiisi,
To press down this Devil?
Now you, Perkele, must
Move your dwelling elsewhere,
Seek another place to live,
Shift yourself from this seat.
Go, Hiisi, to Hell,
Evil one, flee into the mountain,
Before next Thursday,
Before the coming Tuesday,
Or I will pound you to dust,
Grind your lips in a mortar,
Beat your tongue with a pestle,
Crush your teeth on a stone.

By what did excesses once move,
By what did wretched ailments yield?
By these did excesses move,

By these inherited words,
By these deep-born utterances.
By these you too, excess, must move,
By these you, evil, must flee,
Move when you are moved,
Shake when you are shaken!
The excess must move,
The evil power must flee away,
Now is the time for your moving,
The departure-hour for your leaving,
From this human's skin,
From this mother-born body.

Before God's dawn breaks,
Before the sun ascends,
Before the rooster's cry is heard!
Now is Hiisi's skiing-time,
Satan's wandering-time,
Evil power's trembling-time,
The dearest departure-time.
The road is made for your going,
There is track enough and more,
Moonlight for your journey,
Brightness for your traveling,
By horse along the road,
By ski across the hill,
By boat across the water,
To the far end of the North,
To stay there forever
Where there is no moon, no sun.

Evil-born one, yielding,
Flesh-eater, moving,
Wicked one, fleeing away,
From this wretched human's body,
From this ailing frame,
Now that my eyes have seen you,
Now that my eyelids have glimpsed you!
Now is the excess's moving-time,
Earth's evil's fleeing-turn,
Now is the wretch's casting-time,
The strange one's outward-walking time,
From the guiltless heart,
From the innocent belly.
Once before, the made Lempo yielded,
Even the mothered one withdrew,
When this sorcerer worked his sorcery,
When this child fashioned his craft,
So why not you too, wretch,
Yield, you unpolished heathen,
Vanish, you masterless dog,
Withdraw, you motherless cur!

The strong fortress-gates moved,
The iron hinges shook,
The towers of the fortress trembled,
The walls of the fortress flashed,
Fortresses moved, lakes shook,
The copper mountains quaked;
The sky moved from its joints,
The earth shuddered in its frame,
The great clouds were pierced through,
The heavens cracked into holes,
The whole sky became windows,
When God's hour came,
When the Lord's help dawned;
So why do you not also move,
Why do you not move, excess-form,
Why do you not, evil, flee away,
Depart, you unclean one,
On the needle-point of this hour,
On the strait edge of this time;
Now is the precious hour of grace,
The high festival of God,
The priests go to their mass,
They arrive at the preaching-house.

Evil boy, you daylight-creature,
Turn away, wretch, without being told,
Submit without being instructed,
Or you will be told by hand,
Instructed by nose from here.
Your lineage is known,
My lineage is unknown to you,
My lineage is greater,
And my kind is broader:
Human is my skin,
Raised by a human, my bosom.
Do you not, foul one, feel shame,
Do you not know shame, Hiisi's hound?
Go, strange one, wandering,
Evil one, flee aside!
Run on the whore's legs,
Go on the weasel's paws,
Slide away in the pig's likeness,
Wallow like a shaggy beast,
Go howling to Hell,
Wailing to the evil land!
There your seat is ready,
Here there is no seat for you,
Not in the best of times,

Before, the Son of Day was freed
When Päivätär did the freeing,
