The five colours blind a man's eye
The five tones deafen a man's ear
The five flavours numb a man's tongue
Coveted goods trip a man's feet
And horse racing and trophy hunting madden a man's heart

Knowing this, the Sage works with the belly, not the eye
So discards the far, and embraces the here

五色令人目盲
五音令人耳聾
五味令人口爽
馳騁畋獵，令人心發狂
難得之貨，令人行妨

是以聖人為腹不為目
故去彼取此
