Honour and humiliation are a shock!
To prize the Self is to prize suffering!

Why are honour and humiliation shocking?
Honour is only given to inferiors
To gain it brings anxiety
And to lose it the same
So honour and humiliation are a shock!

Why is prizing the Self the same as prizing suffering?
If I am the one suffering
Then I am my Self;
And if I have no Self
How could I suffer?

So cherish the world as your Self
And you may be trusted with it
Love the world as your Self
And you may rely on it

寵辱若驚
貴大患若身

何謂寵辱若驚
寵為下
得之若驚
失之若驚
是謂寵辱若驚

何謂貴大患若身
吾所以有大患者
為吾有身
及吾無身
吾有何患

故貴以身為天下
若可寄天下
愛以身為天下
若可託天下
