Luzaga Bronze -- A Lost Celtiberian Hospitality Document Source Dossier

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

A Good Works Translation from Hesperia GU.01.01 / K.06.01

The Luzaga bronze is a lost Celtiberian bronze document: eight lines of source text, usually treated as a hospitality or agreement record, with Arekorata, Luzaga or Lutiaka, karuo, and gortika standing at the center of the problem. The dossier gives the whole source text and a cautious English guide without pretending that the legal formula is fully solved.

Translation

The Luzaga bronze preserves a formal Celtiberian agreement record: names, community language, and the repeated hospitality word gortika stand at the center of the text. It is widely treated as a hospitality document, but the exact syntax and institutional force remain debated. The safest English form is therefore a document guide: source line, anchor, and likely function.

Document Guide

A bronze hospitality or agreement document associated with Arekorata-related people and Lutiaka or Luzaga, using the Celtiberian institutional words karuo, gortika, and gortikam.

Hesperia records the inscription as a documento hospitalario, a hospitality document. The object itself is a bronze sheet or plaque from Luzaga, Guadalajara, about 15 x 16 cm, with the present deposit unknown. The lost-object status matters: the dossier preserves the source record and its apparatus, not a fresh inspection of the bronze.

Source Line Guide

Line 1: aregoratikubos : karuo : genei gives the Arekorata-related group or recipients and the important karuo institutional word.

Line 2: gortika : lutiakei : augis : barazioka places gortika beside lutiakei, the Luzaga or Lutiaka place anchor.

Line 3: erna : uela : tigerzetaz : so is formula-heavy; tigerzetaz has an important alternate reading in the apparatus.

Line 4: ueizui : belaiokumkue likely continues the named-person or group frame.

Line 5: genis : garigokue : genis repeats genis, making this one of the visible formula lines.

Line 6: sdam : gortikam : elazunom gives the second central hospitality-form word, gortikam, with an apparatus-sensitive ending after it.

Line 7: karuo : tegez : sa gortika repeats karuo and returns to gortika; the division of sa gortika is an apparatus issue.

Line 8: teiuoreigis closes the text as a single preserved form.

Controlled Reader Rendering

The English that can be responsibly offered is:

For the Arekorata-related people, a karuo bond or institutional relation;
a gortika at Lutiaka / Luzaga, with named groups and repeated formulae;
gortikam and karuo recur before the closing form teiuoreigis.

This is intentionally not a sentence-by-sentence legal translation. It shows the shape of the document: parties or communities, a place anchor, repeated hospitality vocabulary, and a closing formula.

Hospitality Vocabulary

The words karuo, gortika, and gortikam are the main public anchors. They belong to the Celtiberian hospitality, friendship, or pact-token field. In a short tessera, the same field can be rendered as a hospitality pact. In the Luzaga bronze, the longer syntax is more complex, so the words are kept in source form and explained rather than flattened.

The Hesperia apparatus gives important alternate readings:

Line 3: tigerzetaz compared with MLH tikerzeboz
Line 6: elazunom compared with Villar-Prósper elazunos
Line 7: sa gortika compared with older sabakortika, saba kortika, and MLH sa : kortika.

These are not small spelling details. They affect how the document is segmented and interpreted.

Place and Community Frame

lutiakei is the main Luzaga or Lutiaka place anchor. aregoratikubos probably points toward Arekorata-related people. The Novallas bronze edition summarizes the normal scholarly caution: the Luzaga bronze is often treated as an official text or agreement that may involve Arekorata and *Lutia, perhaps the same Luzaga where the piece was discovered, but the exact content remains beyond secure continuous translation.
