Alise-Sainte-Reine Votive Lead Fragments -- Two Gallo-Greek Names

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

A Good Works Translation from RIIG CDO-01-14 and CDO-01-15

Two small lead plaques from the Mont-Auxois source sanctuary at Alise-Sainte-Reine preserve short Gallo-Greek traces from a healing-votive context connected with Moritasgos. One preserves the personal name Karomaros; the other is a damaged name or name-part whose reading remains uncertain. The dossier keeps both objects whole and lets the damaged text remain damaged.

Translation

CDO-01-14 — Votive Lead Fragment 1

Cautious Translation

Karomaros.

Translation Note

The preserved text is a personal name, not a sentence. RIIG's Lejeune reading normalizes the damaged final letter as karomaros, with the last sigma supplied. The object comes from the source sanctuary of Mont-Auxois at Alise-Sainte-Reine, in the same local votive setting as the second small lead fragment below.

CDO-01-15 — Votive Lead Fragment 2

Cautious Translation

...oupra... or ...ougra...

Translation Note

This fragment is too damaged for a secure translation. RIIG gives two medium-certainty Lejeune normalizations, one reading the central uncertain sequence as oupra, the other as ougra. An older Rhys proposal understood part of the line as a dative ending followed by the beginning of the votive word bratou, but RIIG rejects that reading. The cautious rendering therefore remains a fragmentary name or name-part, not a restored dedication formula.

Colophon

This page translates RIIG CDO-01-14 and CDO-01-15 from Gaulish in Greek script for the Celtic continental expansion of the Good Work Library. Because both sources are fragmentary and one is only a personal name, the translation is source-close rather than fluent prose.
