Glanum Belenos Basin Fragment -- A Gallo-Greek Theonym

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

A Good Works Translation from RIIG BDR-12-01

A broken stone basin from the monumental center of Glanum preserves only the middle of a divine name. RIIG's controlled restoration identifies the form as a dative theonym for Belenos, probably from a dedication, but the surrounding formula is lost. The dossier gives the whole surviving object without pretending the missing inscription can be recovered.

Translation

...to Belenos...

Translation Note

Only the middle of the divine name is preserved on the stone: lambda and epsilon are intact, and the nu is partly visible. RIIG's Lejeune edition restores the form as a dative theonym, [---βε]λεν̣[ο---], probably naming Belenos as the recipient of a dedication. Because the basin and its inscription are incomplete, the English keeps the loss visible and does not restore the surrounding dedication formula.

Object Note

The inscription was cut on a round stone basin from the monumental center of Glanum, found in 1953 in the portico LVII a and b excavations. RIIG classifies it as a religious or cultic inscription in Gaulish written in Greek alphabet, dated with low certainty to the first half of the first century BCE.

Colophon

This page translates RIIG BDR-12-01 from Gaulish in Greek script for the Celtic continental expansion of the Good Work Library. Because the inscription survives only as a fragment of a divine name, the translation is source-close rather than fluent prose.

RIIG/RIG: BDR-12-01 / RIG G-63

Support: fragments of a round stone basin from Glanum.

Language/script: Gaulish written in Greek alphabet.

Diplomatic source text:

[---]λεν̣[---]

Lejeune normalized/restored source text recorded by RIIG:

[---βε]λεν̣[ο---]

Source-close rendering:

...to Belenos...

RIIG apparatus notes that the theonym should stand in the dative, with a possible ending in -ουι, -ου, or -ο. The same apparatus marks the surrounding votive formula as probable but unrestorable at this length.
