2 John — The Tyndale New Testament (1534)

The second epistle of John in Tyndale's revised New Testament of 1534, translated from the Greek; Tyndale's prologue to the three epistles of John is printed before the first and is given on that page. It is printed here from the copy in the British Library as keyed by the Text Creation Partnership, in the spelling of 1534; the margin notes are given as footnotes.

Chapter 1

1 THe elder to the electe lady and her chyldren which I love in the trueth: and not [A] I only / but also all that have knowē the trueth /

2 for the truthes sake / which dwelleth in vs / and shalbe in vs for ever.

3 With you be grace / mercy / and peace from God yᵉ father / & from the Lorde Iesus Christ the sonne of the father / in trueth and love.

4 I reioysed greatly / that I founde of thy chyldrē walkinge in trouth / as we have receaved a commaundement of the father.

5 And nowe [B] beseche I the lady / not as though I wrote a newe commaundement vnto the / but that same which we had frō the begynninge / that we shuld1 love one another.

6 And this is the love / that we shulde walke after his commaundementes. This commaundement is (that as ye have hearde from the begynninge) ye shuld walke in it.

7 For many deceavers are entred in to the worlde / which confesse not that Iesus [C] Christ is come in the flesshe. This is a deceaver and an Antichrist.

8 Loke on youre selves / that we loose not that we have wrought: but that we maye have a full rewarde.

9 Whosoever transgresseth and bydeth not in the doctrine of Christ / hath not God. He yᵗ endureth in the doctrine of Christ / hath bothe the father and the sonne.

10 Yf ther come eny vnto you & bringe not this learninge / him receave not to housse: nether bid him God spede.

11 For he that biddeth him God spede / is parttaker of his evyll dedes.

12 I had many thinges to wryte vnto you / neverthelesse I wolde not wryte with paper and ynke: but I trust to come vnto you / & speake with you mouth to mouth / that oure ioye maye be full.

13 The sonnes of thy electe syster grete the. Amen.

Notes to Chapter 1

Colophon

Transcribed from The newe Testament dylygently corrected and compared with the Greke by Willyam Tindale (Antwerp: Marten Emperowr, November 1534; STC 2826), British Library copy, as keyed by the Text Creation Partnership (EEBO-TCP Phase I, text A68940): keyed by Apex CoVantage from the ProQuest page images in 2005, then sampled and proofread by Judith Siefring. The TCP transcription was released into the public domain under CC0 1.0. The printed text is in the public domain.

Spelling, capitals, punctuation (including the virgule /), abbreviation marks (the macron, as in thē, and ꝭ) and the signs ¶ ✚ ⊢ ❧ are kept as printed. The only changes are these: long s (ſ) is set as s; superscript letters are set as ᵉ ᵗ ᵒ (yᵉ = the, yᵗ = that); ▪ marks a stop the transcribers could not identify; a word divided at the end of a line, with or without a printed hyphen, is joined into one word; page breaks and catchwords are removed. Woodcuts and decorated initials are not reproduced, but woodcut captions are given. The margin notes are given as numbered footnotes. Printed headings are kept, including their misprints, as italic lines under the library's chapter headings. The letters [A] to [G] are the section letters printed in the margin, by which the 1534 margin references (for example "Esaie vij. c.") and the table of lessons find a passage.

The 1534 print has no verse numbers. They are supplied here from the eBible.org Tyndale New Testament (1534), a public-domain, verse-numbered electronic text of the same edition. A word-by-word alignment showed that about 97 per cent of the two texts' words are identical across the New Testament, and the remainder differ in spelling and abbreviation, with a few slips of keying in one text or the other. The paragraphs of the print give way to one paragraph per verse.

No word on this page is marked illegible.

This is an archival transcription of Tyndale's printed English, not a Good Works Translation: nothing here has been translated or modernised by the library.
