The Golden Scripture of the God of Blessing and Virtue — Fude Zhengshen Jinjing

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

Fude Zhengshen Jinjing — A Spirit-Written Scripture of the Earth God

This is a popular Chinese devotional scripture addressed to Fude Zhengshen (福德正神), "the Right Spirit of Blessing and Virtue" — the deity more commonly called Tudigong, the Earth God or Land God, worshipped at shrines across every village, street, and shop in the Chinese-speaking world. Its date and authorship are not established by anything in the text itself or in the transcription this translation follows; the language is vernacular rather than classical, and internal references — a night "descent to the phoenix altar," a deity speaking of the scripture he himself is composing and handing down for people to copy and chant — mark it as a work of the spirit-writing (扶鸞) tradition, the popular morality-book literature that Chinese and Taiwanese temples still produce and circulate. It was supplied to this translation project catalogued among Daoist Canon materials; no Daozang number could be confirmed for it, and readers should hold its "canon" status loosely.

The scripture opens with four ritual spells and a litany, each with its own heading, then moves into a long chant, mostly in loose four- and seven-character lines, in which the god speaks in his own voice: he urges people to recite his scripture, to bring vegetable and fruit offerings rather than slaughtered animals, to be filial and honest, and promises blessings — health, harvest, marriage, office, trade — to those who take up his teaching. One recurring word is 乘主, literally "Lord of the Vehicle," an epithet for the god himself that this translation keeps as a title rather than resolving into a single clearer sense, since the term is not fixed enough in the text to translate with confidence.

Translated for the Good Works Library directly from the classical and vernacular Chinese, printed in full below the translation. To our knowledge, this is the scripture's first complete published English translation.

Translation

The Spell of the God of Blessing

I reverently invoke the Spell of the God of Blessing:
pure and clear, the Dharma-cloud fills heaven;
whatever wrongs the heart, I will not do —
in prayer and worship I keep my peace secure.

Whoever recites this with diligence
hour by hour reports it to High Heaven.
This Golden Scripture of Blessing and Virtue —
recite it, and you rise to great heights.

Swiftly, swiftly, in accordance with the statutes!

The Spirit-Spell for Purifying the Mind

With whole heart I turn to the command and bow;
scroll upon scroll, I take it up and practice it early.
With mind made upright and intent made sincere I recite,
chanting aloud, my voice raised high.

The three calamities and eight hardships — one may escape their suffering;
body upright, without deceit, one need not fear in vain.
Cultivate early. Recite through the third watch of the night.

Heart-incense rises trail on trail to the roads of cloud.
All Honored Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas —
Mahā Prajñā Pāramitā.

The Spell for Illuminating the Scripture

One scroll, this Scripture of Illumination,
came down into the world sparing no toil.
Whoever diligently takes it up and recites it
can escape fire, blade, and war.

Among the spirits there is response;
ten thousand kalpas of calamity all leave the body.
If recited for father and mother,
father and mother enjoy distant years.

If recited for the dead,
the dead are lifted and carried beyond the clouds.
Recite it three or five times by day;
recite it a hundred, a thousand times by night.

All the spirits rejoice;
blessing and long life are granted to the good.
Swiftly, swiftly, in accordance with the statutes!

The Spell for Communicating with the Spirits

(With whole heart I take refuge and bow in submission — recited three times, with three bows.)

Cultivating causes, I turn to the Lord of the Vehicle,
who saves from suffering in compassion and mercy.
The three calamities and eight hardships —
he is able to ward them off and remove them.
Flood, fire, and plague —

all of these are put away entirely;
sin and transgression are quelled and dissolved.
I beg and hold to this, that his true numinous presence
descend, and the Dharma-rain be spread everywhere.

All the living, diligent in chanting,
strive with all their strength toward good deeds.
Spirit-light shines everywhere;
accumulated goodness leaves its blessing behind.
The altar of the spirit rides the Great Vehicle,

impartial, without favor.
Perfected One who searches out the Way,
greatly stirred in mercy and compassion,
greatly joyful, greatly giving,
greatly sagely, greatly kind —

where there is sin, he saves;
where there is fault, he removes it.
He pardons sin and dissolves transgression;
he wakens the deluded and the foolish.
I reverently invoke the Lord of the Teaching,

the Perfected Lord of the Great Earth.
Swiftly, swiftly, in accordance with the statutes!

Verse for Opening the Scripture

The unsurpassed, profound, subtle Dharma
is hard to encounter in a hundred thousand myriad kalpas.
I now see it, hear it, and receive and hold it;
I vow to fathom the Tathāgata's true meaning.

The Precious Litany of the Right Spirit Who Presides over the Altar of Blessing and Virtue

(With whole heart I take refuge and bow in submission — recited three times, with three bows.)

Lord of the soil and grain of one region,
God of Blessing to ten thousand surnames.
Holding to loyalty, upright and ardent,
he aids the state and guards the people.

Receiving the brief mandate,
he holds one region in awe, and the common people look up to him.
Charged with the office of a clerk of merit,
he keeps the record, and sincerity rises above.

His righteousness runs through the nine heavens;
good and evil are made manifest, and he answers them.
His spirit reaches through the three worlds;
merit and fault are examined and made clear.

He makes secure the walls of gold and the boiling moat;
he settles and steadies the altars of soil and grain.
Greatly loyal, greatly filial,
utterly manifest, utterly numinous,

he protects the state and shelters the people,
greatly joyful, greatly giving.
The Right Spirit of Blessing and Virtue,
raised in rank by the Most High,

Honored Spirit of Soil and Grain,
by the Jade Emperor's decree enfeoffed,
Lord who presides over the altar and guards the shrine,
Bright King of the Earth, the Right Spirit of Blessing and Virtue.

The Right Spirit of Blessing and Virtue's Scripture of Descended Proclamation

Reverently chant the Great Vehicle Scripture of the God of Blessing;
read the text through once, with care and in full.
It wakens the foolish and the deluded to walk the path of goodness;

your name will be entered in the vermilion register, and its fragrance will last forever.
That I ride down and set forth this scripture is no idle talk —
it is like medicine and stone, like a healing decoction.

The morning bell and evening drum sound day upon day;
the living recite this chapter with reverent intent.
One stem of clear incense reaches the blue heavens above —

reaches the blue heavens above, and blessing, wherever it belongs, is granted without limit.

Sacred and true, this precious instruction
will last as long as heaven and earth.

When the four classes of people carry it out, my spirit rejoices;
do not defile it, or disaster will come instead.
Good and evil have no gate; each person calls them upon himself.

Right the mind, make the intent sincere, and good fortune is gained.
The Celestial Worthy and men of the Way brought down this scripture;
monks who cultivate virtue perform the rites upon it.

Hold fast to fasting and precepts, and chant this chapter;
with a sincere heart honor the Buddha, and merit is great;
the household shines, and good fortune is assured.

Hands raise the cymbals, ringing out.

To drink wine and eat meat while performing the rites,
defiling the scripture of the Buddha — how truly a pity!
Praying for blessing yet receiving disaster instead —
common people, be careful and watchful;
never defile a single scroll of this scripture.

Every scroll within this scripture carries the sacred Buddha's intent;
chant it aloud, with solemn cap and robe.

I now come down into the world to tell you this.

Do not come slaughtering animals to pray to the spirits.
If with a true and reverent heart you recite it,
fasting vegetables and fruit offerings are entirely fitting.

Poverty and wealth are both governed by fate;
keep to your lot, be content, and do not force your way.
One who has not sown seed in spring

cannot stand empty-handed on a barren hill and hope for harvest.
Devotedly make offering to the Buddha and prepare a vegetarian feast;
the Tathāgata opens his teaching before the hall.

Waken the foolish and stubborn men of this world;
let each one cultivate and sow the field of blessing.
The smallest gift given moves a wave of gratitude —

a drop of water added to the river makes the accumulated good great.

If you do not believe, look at Emperor Wu of Liang:
once he gave away a single bamboo hat, and thereby ruled the mountains and rivers.

The Jade Emperor summoned me to this hall,
to warn the foolish people with a single discourse,
to speak in full the one road that returns to the source.

Let all beings strive to become worthy and good.
Filial devotion, brotherly love, loyalty, and trust are the root of being human;
propriety, righteousness, integrity, and shame are the foundation of being human.

Honor and revere the scriptures, and chant them with respect;
the spirits of heaven, and the Buddha-dharma, shine through the four seas.

The years of heaven hold many final kalpas.

He granted me to compose this scripture,
to spread it widely through the world for chanting.
Whoever chants it gains peace;
chant it a thousand times,

and the old and young are kept safe and well.
Chant it ten thousand times,
and sons and grandsons flourish greatly.

Cultivation brings boundless blessing.

Establish virtue, establish merit, and let it be known.
Form a bond with the immortals; cross over on the ferry of compassion.
Nine generations of ancestors and seven generations of forebears will forever leave their fragrance behind.

If recited for the dead,
the dead all receive its light.

If recited for the deaf,
the deaf in turn come to hear clearly.

If recited for the mute,
the mute receive it beyond measure.

Its words contain the ten thousand things, forming the primal chaos;
sweet dew condenses into fruit, stored within.

All who are benighted, I waken;
cause and effect are fulfilled in heaven.

The God of Blessing composed this scripture's text,
gladly bestowed for the four classes of people to chant.

Reverently chant the praise of the God of Blessing,
and universal aid is given to the common people.
The Jade Emperor granted that I compose and hand down this text to save the world.

I present it, following the Jade Emperor's decree, to spread it through the world;
do not make light of my Scripture of the God of Blessing.
Though the office is small, its blessing is great —

it can shelter and prosper an entire village.

Since heaven and earth were opened,
none had yet handed down my scripture.

Every other scripture has those who chant it;
who is it that hands down my Scripture of the God of Blessing?

I sigh for the village people. I sigh for the village people.

To plow the fields and work the land, you need my scripture;
throughout the four seasons of the year, all should know to honor it.
Why must you honor me by slaughtering living beings?

All living beings alike have their fated lives.
To seize and cut the throat,
and call it, as if in true sincerity, an offering of reverence —

setting the sacrificial victim before the God of Blessing,
the chicken's head turned toward my face,
its beak opening wide, begging to be lifted beyond —

its two legs kneeling, bound on every side,
a clot of blood hanging at its neck and shin,
its bowels drawn out, its whole body bound —

as if in true intent honoring the God of Blessing,
as if in true intent coming to plead —
but this instead is a crime, and no light one.

Knowing only the taste of flesh, craving the mouth and belly,
not knowing whence the beast's own fate arose,
taking up the knife to seize its life,

stripping the bones, swallowing the corpse, plucking away the feathers and skin.

You eat the flesh; my spirit bears witness to it —
do not imagine you make blessing; you make sin for yourself.

The God of Blessing speaks this true word to you:
wake at once, and change your former cause.

If you do not change your former cause,

watch — the day of retribution and enmity will not stop.
The six domestic animals, the four kinds of livestock, all have their fated lives;
remember well — stay the knife, and avoid its punishment.

If in slaughtering animals you are not careful,
do not expect, in the world of the living, to remain a human being.
If you do not believe the God of Blessing's word,

look then to the Scripture of Cause, Effect, and Retribution.

Into what do the four kinds of livestock and six domestic animals change?
All of them are people guilty of sin in a former life.

Only because their guilt went unrecognized
were they cast down among the four kinds of livestock, to repay their debt.

If all living beings loved as I love,

stay the knife, forgo the slaughter, and avoid its punishment.
Burn incense and reverently invoke my numinous response —
how could you then slaughter the bodies of the four kinds of livestock?

If you do not kill the four kinds of livestock,
to keep such a heart in mind is itself to be a person of virtue and benevolence.

To all my followers who hand down this cause:
surely a hundred affairs will prosper.

Plow the fields and chant my scripture,
and your granaries fill with wealth.
Scholars who chant my scripture
will surely rise high in office and rank.

Workers who chant my scripture
will be sought after without end by their employers.
Buy land, take a wife or a concubine —
noble sons will be born, a cause for joy.

Merchants who wear my scripture
will sell a thousand pieces of gold in goods each day.
Travelers who wear my scripture
will keep their persons safe upon the road.

Those who seek work and wear my scripture
will find every affair accomplished as they wish.
Men without wives who chant my scripture
will be able to take a worthy and beautiful bride.

Women who chant my scripture
will be able to match with a good husband.
Twin bamboo branches, stalk by stalk, growing through —
five sons will pass the examinations and serve at court.

Recite it five times every dawn,
and it surpasses ten thousand scrolls of scripture.

A lifetime's calamities are avoided; the four seasons bring good fortune.
Whoever honors it with a sincere heart —
never take a living creature's life.

In spring, chant my scripture;
blessing and virtue bear witness.
Bring vegetable offerings in reverence,
and purity and good fortune are the truth of it.

In summer, chant my scripture;
blessing and virtue bear witness.
Fragrant fruit offered in full,
and calamity is dispelled, fortune renewed.

In autumn, chant my scripture;
blessing and virtue bear witness.
Fruit offerings sought in blessing —
how could this fail to move the spirits?

In winter, chant my scripture;
blessing and virtue bear witness.
Keep vegetables plain and pure;
never lay out a slaughtered animal.

The four kinds of livestock, the six paths of being,
turning in the wheel of rebirth, suffer and toil.

I urge the people of this world:
forsake killing, and cherish the freeing of life.

From this time forward, my scripture
is the God of Blessing who oversees the grain.

Within the gate of the Three Treasures,
blessing is good to cultivate.

One coin given in joy is worth ten thousand coins reckoned;
it is deposited for you in a treasury that cannot fail —
life after life, generation after generation, your blessing never ceases.

To be a person doing good, you must accumulate virtue;
your household will then naturally stand foremost.

Homage to the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, Foremost and True in Blessing and Virtue. (Recited three times, with three bows.)

Tonight I have come down to the phoenix altar — for what reason?
Out of grace I have composed this scripture.

I urge and exhort, handing down the scripture's bounds,
to waken you and lead you out of the crossing of delusion.
When merit is complete, you rise above the Dharma-realm;
hell is left behind forever.

Those who make weather and wear my scripture —
wind and wave are at once stilled.
Those who face the five plagues and wear my scripture —
poison and harm do not touch the body.

Those who face the five epidemics and wear my scripture
will never suffer that calamity.

Great in virtue, I am honored as "Uncle";
just and fair, I oversee the grain.

If a household honors my scripture,
they celebrate long life and pray for distant years.
If a household chants my scripture,
its scholars rise high in rank.

If a household wears my scripture,
its farmers fill a thousand granaries with grain.
If a household chants my scripture,
its craftsmen grow skilled in a hundred arts.

If a household chants my scripture,
its merchants see their treasure and trade flourish.

Whoever urges others to take it up and recite it
leaves calamity and illness behind forever.

Pray for blessing; copy and print it and send it forth;
hasten to carry this forward on your way.
If you would increase your blessing and your years,
if you would shelter your sons and grandsons,

seek blessing as vast as the eastern sea;
seek long life like the evergreen pine.
Seek wealth, and profit is added to you;
seek sons, and both will be born noble.

Whoever keeps to my precepts,
his name and lineage will reach Heaven's Lord.
Strive in goodness, and you will be rewarded;
joy and celebration will come again and again.

The Lord of the Vehicle composed this Golden Scripture —
this Golden Scripture is truly a golden scripture.
The Lord of the Vehicle came down into the dust of the mortal world,
opened this hall to save from calamity.

He is able to save the hearts of the good;
the good are as if joyful, while evildoers bring sin upon themselves.

Whoever recites this scripture

is kept entirely safe and at peace. With a reverent heart, do good deeds;

chant it aloud, and my spirit is pleased; it moves the blue heavens to answer,

and one may avoid the pavilions of hell.

The Jade Emperor issues his decree,
and at once the good people are saved.

Among men and women of this world, many bear good fruit;
their goodness in chanting reaches the celestial court.
One stem of clear incense — anyone may chant it;

chanting it in this way keeps the body safe.
Whoever recites this scripture will have, life after life, generation after generation, clear and bright eyes.

Whoever does not recite this scripture, when the final kalpa comes upon him,
will find flood, fire, blade, and war hard to pass through.
My spirit will judge you, though you remain a mortal being;

a mortal being who cultivates may turn into a higher being,
and by cultivation return home to the heavenly realm.

Boundless in power, I composed this scripture;
give it your whole heart, and chant my scripture always —
utmost bliss lies in the celestial court.

Verse for Closing the Scripture

May this merit
extend to all beings everywhere;
with reverent sincerity honoring Blessing and Virtue,
may all forever enjoy this store of grace.

This Good Works Translation was prepared for the Ethics and Response shelf of the Good Works Library. The English was translated independently from the Chinese text printed below. The source is vernacular rather than classical Chinese throughout, mixing loose four-, six-, and seven-character lines with occasional longer run-on sentences; this translation keeps the source's own paragraph and stanza breaks and lineates by sense rather than forcing every line to a fixed English meter. The four opening spells, the litany, and the opening and closing verses are set off with their own headings, as in the source; the long central chant runs continuously, as it does in the Chinese, with only its one internal heading kept.

Before the claim below was written, a genuine translation-status check was performed: the house bibliographies of Daoist texts in Western translation (Komjathy's Daoist Texts in Translation and the 2023 Purple Cloud survey) were searched by the Chinese title, its component terms (福德, 土地, 福神), and the deity's English names (Tudigong, Earth God); neither records this text or any translation of it. Two web searches were run, for the Chinese title and for "Fude Zhengshen Jinjing Tudigong scripture English translation"; both turned up only Chinese-language witnesses of the text (Chinese Wikisource, temple and blog transcriptions, a mobile app) and general background on Fude Zhengshen and Tudigong, with no complete English translation of this scripture found anywhere. To our knowledge, this is the first complete published English translation of the Fude Zhengshen Jinjing. We state this as the limit of our search, not as a certainty.

A note on classification and on a few terms. This text was supplied among Daoist Canon materials for this project, but nothing in the transcription itself — no catalogue headnote, no Zhengtong Daozang citation — confirms it as part of the historical printed canon, and its language and content (a deity dictating a new scripture through a "descent to the phoenix altar," 臨鸞, the classic idiom of Chinese spirit-writing) mark it instead as a popular morality-book scripture of the kind still produced at Tudigong shrines; no Daozang number is claimed for it here. The epithet 乘主, "Lord of the Vehicle," recurs as a name for the god himself; its exact sense was not confidently resolvable and is kept as a title rather than paraphrased into a guess. The line 南無春正福德菩薩摩訶薩 resisted fully confident parsing of the word 春 ("spring"); it is rendered here by sense as an honorific rather than a proper name. The closing formula 急急如律令, an ancient talisman command, is kept close to its literal sense, "swiftly, swiftly, in accordance with the statutes," as is conventional.
