The Wondrous Body-Protecting Scripture of the Great Unity Who Saves from Suffering — Taiyi Jiuku Hushen Miao Jing

Taiyi Jiuku Hushen Miao Jing — Revealed by the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning

This is an anonymous scripture of the Lingbao tradition of salvation liturgy, preserved in the Daoist Canon. It belongs to the genre of scriptures spoken in praise of Taiyi, the Great Unity Who Saves from Suffering — one of the most widely venerated deities of Daoist funerary and protective ritual, whose cult and associated liturgies are generally understood by scholars to have risen to particular prominence from the Song dynasty (960–1279) onward. This particular text's own date and authorship are not established; it is presented here as it survives in the Canon.

The scripture is cast as a revelation. The Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning, questioned by the Most High Lord Lao, discloses the nature of Great Unity: a being of measureless compassion who takes on countless forms, rides a nine-headed lion, and answers wherever a voice cries out in suffering. Two short passages of verse — an opening gatha and an incanted spell — frame a long central passage of prose in which the Celestial Worthy lists, one promise at a time, the perils from which chanting Great Unity's sacred name and reciting this scripture will deliver a person: illness, slander, shipwreck, storm, family discord, rebellion, demons, wild beasts, danger in childbirth, imprisonment, and the unquiet dead.

A note on the name. This copy of the scripture writes the deity's name as 太一 (Taiyi), "Great Unity" — where most other surviving copies of this text and its liturgical family write 太乙, also read Taiyi. The two characters are identical in sound and were used interchangeably for this deity across the tradition; this translation follows the spelling of the source text throughout and renders both, wherever they occur, as "Great Unity."

Translated for the Good Works Library directly from the classical Chinese of the Daoist Canon, which is printed in full below the translation. We know of one prior English rendering of this scripture, under its more common variant spelling: an amateur translation posted publicly on a Daoist discussion forum. This Good Works Translation was prepared independently from the Chinese and did not consult it.

Verse for Opening the Scripture

Still, still, and utterly without trace —
empty, it towers: a lofty rise through kalpas.
Wide open lies the Cavern-Mystery text;
who can fathom its hidden, distant reach?
Once one enters the Great Vehicle's road,
who could count the years and kalpas passed?
Neither born, nor ever destroyed —
yet if birth is sought, it is through the lotus.
Transcending the roads of the Three Realms,
a compassionate heart unbinds the world's net.
The Perfected hold virtue unsurpassed,
age after age becoming kin to immortals.

At that time, the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning was above the Mysterious Effulgence, within the Heaven of Clarity and Subtlety, in a nine-colored hall of jade. He ascended his seven-jeweled throne and sent forth great light, universally gathering the myriad spirits to give instruction to the heavens. The Celestial Worthies, Lords of the Way, Lords Lao, Thearch-Lords, Primal Lords, Elders, and Sages of the ten directions, together with the countless host of immortals, all came before his seat to hear the wondrous Dharma proclaimed. Then the Brahma King praised it, Sakra rejoiced and sang, and immortal music sounded of itself, following the light as it came.

At that time, the Most High Lord Lao rose from his throne of jade and stepped forth upon lotus flowers. Perfected Ones attended him at his left and right; Jade Maidens supported his trailing robes. He came before the Celestial Worthy and memorialized, saying: "Your servants have been favored by our Master's teaching and receive blessing in the halls of Heaven; the merit bestowed is boundless, the grace beyond measure. I observe that within the Three Realms, within the sea of suffering, measureless living beings meet with disaster and misfortune out of turn, entangled in the net of transgression, and beings of every kind cannot escape the cycle of birth and transformation. I cannot remain settled within Great Clarity — I wish to rely upon your awesome light and divide my body through the Three Realms, to rescue and deliver the host of beings. I hope only that the Most Honored One will regard their hearts with compassion."

Thereupon the Celestial Worthy of Primordial Beginning stirred slightly in his Dharma-body, and said to Lord Lao: "Excellent! Excellent! Your rising from the throne has startled the many heavens. To rescue from suffering and save the living need not be spoken by you — return to your seat, and I will proclaim it."

The Celestial Worthy said: "The myriad things are born of me; the myriad spirits are transformed by me. Where suffering is met, where misfortune is met, they must be rescued — but this need not be your awesome power dividing your body to save and deliver them. In the eastern Land of Everlasting Joy there is one of great compassion and benevolence, the Great Unity, Celestial Worthy Who Saves from Suffering, whose transformation-bodies are as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and who answers wherever a voice calls him: he may dwell in the palace of Heaven, or descend among men, or reside in the hells, or gather in the host of demons; he may become an immortal lad or a jade maiden, a Thearch-Lord or a sage, a Celestial Worthy or a Perfected One, a Vajra spirit-king, a demon-king or a mighty warrior, a Celestial Master or a Daoist priest, an August Personage or a Lord Lao, a Heavenly Physician or an Officer of Merit, a man or a woman, a civil official or a military officer, a Chief Marshal, a teacher or a Chan master, a Master of Wind or a Master of Rain. His supernatural powers are measureless, his merit and practice inexhaustible; he seeks out the voice and rescues from suffering, responding to beings according to the occasion. Now I proclaim this for you to know."

Lord Lao again memorialized, saying: "This awesome spirit has measureless transformations — how may he be brought before my Master's throne?"

The Celestial Worthy told Lord Lao: "You may raise your voice and chant the name of Great Unity, and have the immortal officials intone it together, and he will naturally respond, transform, and manifest his body." Thereupon Lord Lao and the assembled immortals, following this instruction, together raised their voices, chanting and intoning the name of the Great Unity, Celestial Worthy Who Saves from Suffering.

Suddenly, among the ranks of the Thearch-Lords, a lad was seen, treading step by step upon lotus flowers. He bowed his head to the ground before the Celestial Worthy and memorialized, saying: "I am Great Unity. Because my Master has opened his teaching and expounded the Dharma, I have gathered my many forms together to hear the wondrous sound proclaimed. In the heavens, joy lasts but a moment; below, it endures through ten thousand kalpas. Within the Three Realms the host of beings suffer, crying out in loud voices, 'Suffering! Suffering!' — circling around the Celestial Worthy, bowing and prostrating themselves, they beg to descend through the Gate of Heaven." At this the assembled immortals, seeing the lad's memorial and reply, wept tears that fell upon their robes, and sighed, choking, saying: "Above there is heavenly joy; below there is calamity suffered. The wheel of rebirth pays out its due — when will there be peace and ease?"

The Celestial Worthy told Great Unity: "Your vow and practice are compassionate. Living beings suffer — in accordance with your vow and practice, divide your body and save them." The lad smiled with joy, bowed twice, and withdrew. The assembled immortals watched as the lad transformed into a Celestial Worthy: his feet treading lotus flowers, a circle of light shining forth, his hands holding a willow branch and pure water, nine-headed lions following at his left and right — and he rode off through the empty sky. Again they saw the Celestial Worthy transform into a Thearch-Lord: feet treading lotus flowers, hands holding a ruyi scepter, a circle of light shining forth, nine-headed lions following at his left and right — and he rode off through the empty sky. Again they saw the Thearch-Lord transform into a Perfected One: feet treading lotus flowers, hands releasing spirit-light that reached up through the Nine Heavens and down through the Nine Earths, nine-headed lions following at his left and right — and he rode off through the empty sky. Again they saw the Perfected One transform into a woman: her body clothed in an undergarment of fire-brocade, hair unbound, feet bare, treading upon lotus flowers, hands holding a golden sword, a circle of light shining forth, nine-headed lions with mouths breathing flame circling around her form — and she rode off through the empty sky.

Lord Lao memorialized the Celestial Worthy, saying: "From what source do this Sage's awesome virtue and power of transformation to save the living arise? Through how many kalpas has he cultivated practice? I wish only that, in response to the occasion, you would proclaim this for the assembly."

The Celestial Worthy said: "In Heaven this Sage is called the Blessed Spirit of Great Unity; in the world he is called the Great Compassionate Practitioner; in the hells he is called the Thearch-Lord of the Shining Sun; among the outer paths, subduing evil, he is called the Radiant King of Lions; in the Water Bureau he is called the Thearch-Lord of the Cavernous Abyss. You are my breath (qi); I am your root. That you know this and I know this — this is the essence of the Nine Yang, most numinous, most numinous. You may keep it secret; it cannot be told in full."

At that time Lord Lao, hearing the Celestial Worthy's words, closed his eyes and settled his spirit, snapped his fingers and knocked his head to the ground, incanting:

The ancestral breath of the primal origin
wondrously transforms into the essence of Nine Yang.
Its awesome virtue spreads through the ten directions;
hazy, indistinct, its truth appears.
Three nines send forth a rising wind;
wavering, it parts from the first blue-green.
Reverently, jade nectar is produced;
partaking of it, one is freed from thirst and hunger.
The myriad spirits shall trust and revere it;
the Eight Sufferings cannot follow.
Accumulate practice, uphold the codes and precepts,
and be led by the hand to realize the Jade Capital.

At that time, the Celestial Worthy again told Lord Lao and the assembled immortals:

If there are living beings who from time to time meet with pestilence and disease, sickness and pain lingering on, they may burn incense, chant the sacred name, and read and recite this scripture; their illness will retreat and disperse, and they will gain peace and ease.

If there are living beings who seek office or position, and slander and flattery arise against them wrongfully, they need only chant the sacred name and read and recite this scripture, and jealousy and envy will naturally not arise, and they will rise high in rank and salary.

If there are living beings who journey upon rivers and seas, startled by wind and wave, threatened with harm by fish and dragons, they may fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and they will reach the shore without harm or injury.

If there are living beings who meet with thunder and lightning, terrified by wind and rain, they need only fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and their spirit and breath will grow clear and fresh, and their souls will not be shaken.

If there are living beings whose parents and teachers, whose six degrees of kin, are not in harmony, whose brothers are estranged and divided, they need only fix their thoughts, chant the sacred name, and read and recite this scripture, and they will naturally feel their six degrees of kin grow harmonious — the father kind, the son filial, the elder brother friendly, the younger brother respectful.

If there are emperors and rulers of states whose court gives rise to rebellious ministers, whose armies and fires bring chaos, whose wind and rain fall out of season, so that the ten thousand people are mired in suffering and blame heaven and earth alike, they need only fast and chant, and read and recite this scripture, and the wind and rain will return to their proper season, the rebellious ministers will be exposed, and the state will be at peace and the people secure.

If there are living beings wrongly harmed by evil spirits, ghosts, and bandits, they need only fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and the demons and specters will of themselves cease, and the ghosts and bandits will perish.

If there are living beings who travel among mountains and forests and are harmed by insects, snakes, birds, and beasts rushing to seize them, they need only fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and the birds and insects will of themselves withdraw and dare not come to harm them.

If there are women who have conceived and carry a child, and face difficulty as the time of birth draws near, they need only fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and they will naturally feel the true qi protecting and guarding them, and will be without pain, without injury, and will bear a wise son or a well-formed daughter, the six faculties complete, mother and child together and well.

If there are men or women who long for the Way and seek immortality, whether remaining at home or having left the household, nourishing their nature and their life, they need only fix their thoughts, chant the sacred name, and read and recite this scripture, and they will attain the fulfillment of merit and practice, and ascend to Heaven in broad daylight.

If there are living beings who repeatedly meet with the cangue and chains, confined within prison, groaning with no one to hear their complaint, they need only fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and they will attain release and escape from the prison.

If there are living beings who, for the sake of their seven generations of ancestors and nine forebears, their fellow disciples and companions in study, their husbands and wives, their sons and daughters — who after the body's death remain detained, lingering in the cold courts, not yet able to be reborn — need only fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and these will naturally escape the shadowed realm and attain birth in Heaven.

If there are living beings drawn along by enemies from past lives, entangled again and again in connection, they need only fix their thoughts and chant the sacred name, and the enmity will be dissolved, and the bonds thereafter cut off and removed.

Thereupon the Celestial Worthy told Lord Lao: "This Sage is the most honored, the most noble, the most sacred, the most numinous. On the third and ninth day of every month, he often descends among men. One should, in a pure chamber, constantly burn incense and bow in worship, offering willow branch and pure water, flowers of the season and young herbs, making offerings according to the ritual method — and one will naturally live out a full span of one hundred and twenty years, the Five Blessings will constantly arrive, and the Eight Difficulties will be kept far away. Take care to avoid the ashes swept from beneath the stove and the impurity of the pomegranate — these are unclean; do not let the offerings touch them."

At that time, when the Celestial Worthy had finished speaking the scripture, throughout the great assembly the host of immortals sang out in praise: lions could speak, phoenixes could talk, fish and dragons became human, the withered and decayed returned to life, and every crawling, sentient thing alike received this blessing. Solemn and magnificent, all attained ascent to immortality.

Thereupon the Lords of the Way, Lord Lao, and the measureless host of Perfected Ones together raised their voices in praise, saying: "Now that we have heard this wondrous sound, we have gained great benefit." They paid their respects, took their leave, and withdrew.

This Good Works Translation was prepared for the Lingbao Salvation Scriptures shelf of the Good Works Library. The English was translated independently from the classical Chinese text printed below. The scripture's narrative prose is rendered as prose; its two passages of verse — the opening gatha and Lord Lao's incanted spell — are kept as verse, with the source's own line divisions. The long catalogue of perils and blessings that forms the center of the teaching has been set as one paragraph per promise, following the source's own repeating formula, for ease of reading; the source itself presents this catalogue as a single continuous passage.

Before the claim below was written, a genuine translation-status check was performed. The two standard bibliographies of Daoist texts in Western-language translation available to this project (Komjathy's Daoist Texts in Translation and the 2023 Purple Cloud update) were searched under this scripture's Chinese title, its pinyin, and the more common variant spelling of the deity's name (太乙), and record no translation of it. A general web search was then run under the Chinese title and the pinyin title. That search turned up one prior English rendering: an amateur translation of this scripture under its more common variant title, 太乙救苦護身妙經, posted publicly on the Daoist discussion forum The Dao Bums, under the title "The Great Oneness Savior from Sorrow Scripture," apparently since around 2020. The forum page itself could not be reached to confirm the translator's identity or how much of the scripture the rendering covers. Because a prior English translation is known to exist, no claim of firstness is made here. This Good Works Translation was prepared independently from the Chinese text below and did not consult that forum translation.

A note on the deity's name. The source text consistently writes 太一 (Taiyi), "Great Unity," where most other surviving copies of this scripture and its wider liturgical family write 太乙 — two characters, identical in sound, used interchangeably across the tradition for the same figure. This translation follows the spelling of the source text throughout and renders both, where they occur, as "Great Unity." No other marks requiring comment occur in this source text.
