Taishang Shuo Ziwei Shenbing Huguo Xiaomo Jing — Spoken by the Most High Lord Lao
This scripture belongs to the Daoist Canon's literature of Zhenwu, the "Perfected Warrior" (also called the Dark Warrior, Xuanwu, and later venerated as the Supreme Sovereign of the Dark Heaven, North Pole Commander-in-Chief). Its date and compiler are not recorded in the text itself; scriptures of this cult multiplied from the Song dynasty onward as Zhenwu's cult grew into a major state and popular devotion, and this text's language — talismans, star-officers, and a war against the ghost-hosts of Mount Fengdu — sits squarely within that tradition. It is preserved in the Daoist Canon; its exact catalogue number was not confirmed in preparing this translation, and no claim is made about it here.
The scripture is short narrative prose, spoken throughout in the voice of the Most High Lord Lao (太上老君): first a scene of cosmic and human crisis, then Lord Lao's miraculous begetting of the god Zhenwu from the vital breaths, Zhenwu's war on the demon-hosts of Fengdu, a set of omens marking the turn from calamity to a settled reign, and Zhenwu's investiture as Commander-in-Chief of the North Pole. One recurring term is Ziwei (紫微), "Purple Tenuity," the name both of the celestial palace where Lord Lao speaks and of the divine soldiery he commands — kept as "Purple Tenuity" throughout to hold the two together.
Translated for the Good Works Library directly from the classical Chinese of the Daoist Canon, which is printed in full below the translation. To our knowledge, this is the first complete published English translation of this scripture.
Translation
At that time, in the second year of the reign of the Sovereign on High, on the eighth day of the month of Jianchen, the Most High Lord Lao, at the Upper Palace of Purple Tenuity, spoke for the Great Brahma Heavenly Emperor, the High Perfected of the Four Poles, the Primordial-Born of the Nine Heavens, and the Perfected Sovereigns of the Three Heavens, the chapter of the Purple Tenuity Divine Spell, the Numinous Treasure of Great Being, the Spontaneous Divine Soldiers Who Protect the Nation and Dispel Demons.
At that time it was the jiashen year of Kaihuang, when the count had reached its extremity of one hundred and six. Heaven and earth would not close; baleful vapors ran abroad. The five grains did not ripen, and men plotted against one another. Soldiery and calamity rose on every side, and the people of the realm knew no peace. Those who had accumulated goodness and virtue, the cultivators of the real, were carried across the great crisis and ranked among the officials of the immortals. Common men, unlearned, gave no thought to their allotted fate and did not follow the scriptures and their laws; right and wrong fell into confusion, the four views grew dark and clouded, the six feelings stained them, and their hearts held nothing in reverence. When they did evil, they feared nothing. All this came from the karmic response of living beings, and so it was made to be so.
At that time the demons and ghosts of the six caverns of Fengdu lay hidden by day and came forth by night, transforming themselves into shapes hideous and foul. Each demon and ghost led its own kindred and spread five kinds of pestilence. Those afflicted swooned and died; the ghostly vapor struck men and turned into disease and eruption. At that time shepherds and governors of every rank, the ten-thousandfold multitude of civil and martial men, held down the mountains and pressed upon the wilds, fleeing in terror; men cried out and women wept, in bitter grief and anguish, until at last it moved Heaven above.
The Celestial Worthy beheld this, and pitying the mortal multitude who suffered such distress, he stirred the two lodges Xu and Wei, entrusting his essence to answer the crisis. Taking the Real as father, the Primal as mother, and the Beginning as surname, three vital breaths descended into the Palace of Vast Numen and transformed into a great mass, formed like primal chaos. From it there issued above a ninefold light, its essence blazing brighter than the sun, its rose-clouds resplendent, its radiance cast upon Grand Subtlety. Ever there attended it Jade Maidens and Golden Lads, great rainbow-dragons and lions, and the Officers of the Four Direct Talismans, guarding the sacred embryo. When it came to the seventh day of the month of Jianshen, the embryo split open of itself. As though a great thunderclap had struck, the purple caul fell away, and the whole jade form answered it, its body rising to five hundred zhang. Of itself it declared: "I am the spirit Zhenwu." His hair unbound, in a black robe, he bore a sword and wore boots. Divine soldiers and talisman-officers, the Duke of Thunder and the Mother of Lightning, and the Envoys of the Four Direct Quarters attended and followed his person.
At that time the Celestial Worthy commanded Zhenwu to subdue the ghosts and demons at Mount Fengdu. Zhenwu, receiving the Celestial Worthy's command, thereupon ordered the Deputy General Tianyou, Slayer of Ghosts of the Northern Fengdu, to lead the Great Army of the Divine Empyrean, the Corps-Officers of the Nine Vital Breaths, the Jade Maidens of the Three Heavens, the Spirit-Lords of the Seven Vital Breaths, the True Governors of the Five Numina, the Great Spirit in Yellow Armor, and the heavenly soldiers and talisman-officers — a host of a hundred thousand times ten thousand — to give great battle against the ghosts and demons of the six caverns in the wilds of Cavern-Shade.
At that time the Lord of Ghosts again used the vital breaths of Kan and Li to transform himself into a great blue-gray tortoise and a monstrous serpent, seeking to work further transformation. Zhenwu, by his divine power, crushed and subdued them, pinning them beneath his feet. Zhenwu then sent forth the Great Spirit Who Casts Fire with the Golden Bell, who chanted the stanza that subdues demons. He breathed out from his mouth, and it became a great wheel of fire, which burned the host of ghosts. Their hair was scorched and their skin blistered, and their demonic power could no longer act. They turned their hearts and repented their faults, and made a great vow, giving over their lives to the Utmost Real. At that time Zhenwu sent his heavenly soldiers and talisman-officers to chain the host of ghosts and deliver them to the Great Cavern of Fengdu.
The Celestial Worthy said: When yin reaches its extremity it proclaims change, and the numbering of yang draws near. Then the Yellow Star gathers its splendor, and the Red Talisman displays its auspice; a purple vapor rushes into the court, and the five planets gather at the Well. A flowing rainbow pierces the moon, and great lightning reaches the far pivot. Thereafter, receiving the numen sent down from the sacred peaks, stars are born and ministers conceived, calendars and numbers are completed, and so the realm under Heaven comes to be. Sage lords come forth into the world, and worthy ministers assist them. The treacherous and depraved hide themselves away, and the five weapons are put down and laid to rest. The nine grains ripen in abundance, kindness and filial piety arise day by day, and the people rejoice in their labor. The Perfected Lord has done merit for the age, removing harm on behalf of the people, and his virtue has moved the vault of Heaven above.
The Celestial Worthy sent the Golden Flower Jade Lad and the Embroidered-Robe Envoy, bearing the Nine-Dragon Talisman-Mandate, to descend with an edict, saying: "For your merit in cutting down poison and putting down evil, you are enfeoffed as the Great General of the Dark Heaven, Commander-in-Chief of the North Pole." At that time the Great Sage mounted his blue-green dragon and paid homage in thanks before the Three Purities. At that time the perfected immortals of the lower realm and all the sacred host raised their eyes to the cloud-road, gazed after his divine light, and watched with their eyes the trailing rose-clouds as they bowed and took leave of the true Sovereign. In a moment, Heaven let down purple clouds and the earth raised a light mist; cloud and mist mingled together, and only the sound of heavenly music was heard, growing gradually higher and more distant. The great assembly then returned each to their own lands. Following exactly the golden word, they proclaimed and spread the transforming power of the Dao, and circulated this precious scripture abroad. Beneath the Four Heavens, all received the blessing of the Perfected, boundless in blessing and virtue, to be forever upheld and practiced.

This Good Works Translation was prepared for the Daoist shelf of the Good Works Library. The English was translated independently from the classical Chinese text printed below. The scripture is continuous narrative prose spoken in Lord Lao's voice, and it is rendered here as prose throughout, following its paragraph divisions as they stand in the source.
Before the claim below was made, a bounded translation-status check was performed: the two local reference bibliographies of Daoist texts in Western-language translation (Komjathy's Daoist Texts in Translation and the 2023 Purple Cloud survey) were searched by Chinese title, pinyin, and by the pinyin fragment "Ziwei," with no entry found for this scripture; a live web search for the Chinese title and for the romanized title together with "translation" returned discussion of the scripture's content and its place in the Zhenwu cult but no published English translation of the text itself. On this evidence, to our knowledge this is the first complete published English translation of the Taishang Shuo Ziwei Shenbing Huguo Xiaomo Jing. This is stated as the limit of our knowledge, not as a certainty.
A note on terms. Ziwei (紫微), "Purple Tenuity," names both the celestial palace of the opening scene and the divine soldiery of the title; it is kept as "Purple Tenuity" in both places to preserve the link. Zhenwu (真武), "the Perfected Warrior," is kept as the proper name Zhenwu throughout rather than translated, following the exemplar's practice with other divine proper names once introduced; his later title, Xuantian Dajiang, is rendered "the Great General of the Dark Heaven." One phrase — 奉天尊劫, literally "received the Celestial Worthy's kalpa" — reads awkwardly if taken literally; it is translated here in the sense the context requires, "received the Celestial Worthy's command," on the understanding that 劫 stands for a near-homophone term of command rather than "kalpa" in this position; this reading is offered as the most probable sense, not a certainty.

Classical Chinese text of the Daoist Canon, in the Chinese Wikisource transcription. Presented complete for reference, study, and verification alongside the English translation above.
