Paul on the road to Jerusalem meets a child who is the Holy Spirit, and ascends through the heavens — past the toll-collectors, past the scourging angels, past the old man of light whose throne outshines the sun sevenfold — to the tenth heaven, where he greets his companions in the spirit.
[The Apocalypse of Paul ...]
[...] on the road. And he answered him, saying, "By which road shall I go up to Jerusalem?" The child answered, saying, "Tell me your name, so that I may show you the road." The child knew Paul — who he was. He wished to make conversation with him through his words, so that he might find an excuse to speak with him.
The child answered, saying, "I know you, Paul — that you are the one who was blessed from his mother's womb. For I have come to you, because you are going up to Jerusalem, to your fellow apostles. And for this reason you were called. And I am the Spirit who walks with you. Awaken your mind, Paul, and [...]"
[...] for [...] the whole [...] among the principalities and these authorities and archangels, and powers and the whole race of daemons [...] the one who reveals bodies to a seed of soul.
And after he had finished this speech, he answered, saying to me, "Awaken your mind, Paul. And see — the mountain upon which you are standing is the mountain of Jericho, so that you may know the hidden things in the things that are visible. The twelve apostles whom you will go to — they are chosen spirits. And they will greet you."
He raised his eyes up and saw them greeting him. Then the Holy Spirit who was speaking with him snatched him up on high, to the third heaven. And he passed beyond to the fourth heaven.
The Holy Spirit spoke to him, saying, "Look, and see your likeness upon the earth." And he looked down and saw those who were upon the earth. He looked and saw [...] And he looked [...] those upon the [...]
[He] looked down and saw the twelve apostles at his right and at his left in the creation. And the Spirit was walking before them.
And I saw in the fourth heaven, according to kind — I saw the angels resembling gods, the angels bringing a soul out of the land of the dead. They placed it at the gate of the fourth heaven. And the angels were scourging it. The soul answered, saying, "What sin have I committed in the world?"
The toll-collector who sits in the fourth heaven answered, saying, "It was not right for you to commit all these lawless acts that are in the world of the dead." The soul answered, saying, "Bring witnesses. Let them show you in what body I committed lawlessness. Do you wish to bring a book and read from it?"
And three witnesses came. The first answered, saying, "Was it not I who was in the body the second hour? I rose up against you until you fell into anger and wrath and envy." The second answered, saying, "Was it not I who was in the world? And I came in at the sixth hour and I saw you, and I desired you." And he said, "Behold — now I charge you on account of the murders that you committed." The third answered, saying, "Did I not come to you at the twelfth hour of the day, when the sun was about to set? I gave it darkness until you completed your sins."
When the soul heard these things, it looked down in grief. And then it looked upward and was thrown down. The soul that was thrown down went to a body that had been prepared for it. And behold — its witnesses were finished.
And I looked upward, and I saw the Spirit saying to me, "Paul, come — draw near to me." And as I walked, the gate opened, and I went up to the fifth heaven. And I saw my fellow apostles walking with me, and the Spirit was going before them.
And I saw a great angel in the fifth heaven, holding an iron whip in his hand, and there were three other angels with him. And I looked into their faces. But they were competing with each other, with whips in their hands, driving the souls to the judgment.
And I was walking with the Spirit, and the gate opened for me. Then we went up to the sixth heaven. And I saw my fellow apostles walking with me. And the Holy Spirit was leading me before them. And I looked up on high and saw a great light shining down upon the sixth heaven. I spoke, saying to the toll-collector who is in the sixth heaven, "Open for me." And the Holy Spirit who was before me opened for me.
Then we went up to the seventh heaven. And I saw an old man of light, and his garment was white. His throne, which is in the seventh heaven, was brighter than the sun by seven times.
The old man spoke, saying to me, "Where are you going, Paul, O blessed one, the one who was set apart from his mother's womb?" And I looked toward the Spirit, and he was nodding his head, saying to me, "Speak with him." And I answered, saying to the old man, "I am going to the place from which I came." And the old man answered me, saying, "Where are you from?" And I answered, saying, "I am going down to the world of the dead, in order that I might lead captive the captivity that was led captive in the captivity of Babylon."
The old man answered me, saying, "How will you be able to get away from me? Look — and see the principalities and the authorities." The Spirit spoke, saying, "Give him the sign that is in your hand." And then I gave him the sign. He turned his face downward to his creation and those who are his own among the authorities.
And then the seventh heaven opened, and we went up to the ogdoad. And I saw the twelve apostles. They greeted me. And we went up to the ninth heaven. I greeted all those who are in the ninth heaven. And we went up to the tenth heaven. And I greeted my fellow spirits.
