The Höllenzwang, the "Coercion of Hell", is the name German popular magic gave to the books of conjuration laid at the door of Doctor Johann Faust. This one, the "great and mighty" Coercion, has a single object. The exorcist and his companions are to compel Aziel, the spirit who keeps the hidden treasures of the whole world, to appear before their circle in the form of a twelve-year-old youth and to leave there, unchanged and without illusion, two hundred and ninety-nine thousand ducats in gold. The book gives Aziel's seal, on which the exorcist stands with his left foot; the signs to be drawn on paper and laid around the circle; the hours of each weekday at which he may be called; a chain of citations and curses that pass from Aziel to Lucifer and his chiefs and back; and the binding, the demand and the dismissal.

Its title page gives the imprint "Prague, in Bohemia, printed in the Jesuit College", and it was reprinted by Johann Scheible of Stuttgart in 1851 as the first of the fourteen magical works gathered in Doctor Faust's Bücherschatz. The Sea-Spirit, tenth in the same collection, praises a Prague Jesuit edition of this very Coercion as the best of its kind. Much of the book is Catholic prayer turned to a conjurer's use: a long litany "through" the names of God, the Passion of Christ, the sorrows of Mary and the saints, and a binding "through the five words" of the Mass. Its numbered strings of names mix Hebrew divine names, scraps of Latin and Greek, and words that belong to no language; some must be read backwards, and the book says which.

Mighty conjurations of the infernal spirits, and especially of Aziel, by which he must bring treasures and goods of every kind, obediently, without any tumult, terror or harm, before the circle his conjurers have set, and leave them there.

Introduction

First of all, let this serve you as true information: in this work of conjuring the spirit Aziel you need not become his property, even though he will flatter you and entice you to sign your soul over to him with your blood. No! By the power of the words you speak he will be compelled to obey you, according to your wish and your will that cannot be held back, without gainsaying, and to do what you lay upon him. So despise his cunning and pay it no heed; hold rather to God, by whose highest and almighty names he must deliver to you, trembling, what you have commanded, and he will find himself powerless to do harm to you, to your soul as well as to your body.

Next: before you, as exorcist, take this work in hand, it is your very particular duty first to fast for three days, to pray, to give alms, to confess, to take communion, and to do other good and holy works. Have three holy Masses devoutly read as well, in honour of God the Holy Spirit, so that he may enlighten you and grant you his almighty grace to subdue the spirit, and you may reach your purpose profitably and with good fortune.

Thirdly, the circle and this book must be blessed by a properly ordained and consecrated priest each time you mean to use them, and you must wear a holy particle on your breast. But demand of the spirit that he appear in the friendly form and lovely countenance of a youth of twelve years.

Whatever you do, do it to the honour and glory of God the Holy Spirit. For (I write it once more) by his powerful aid you will subdue the spirit and turn your poverty into riches. But do not forget to walk in the ways of the Lord, and to give your offering to the poor, the churches and the schools; otherwise the riches you have gained will bring you eternal torment instead of the joy you looked for.

The signet or seal of the spirit Aziel, which he was made to hand over to Doctor Faust; the days and hours in which this spirit is to be summoned; his power over hidden goods; and that two circles must be made side by side, the one dedicated to Aziel who is to appear, the other the one in which the exorcist¹ shuts himself in with his helpers: all this shall be explained and shown in this section.

The three circles are made in the usual way. Only, at the third, add: "Should there be in this circle any little point or little crack, may Jesus set his holy cross before it, in the name of God the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit † Amen!"

Before the conjuration of the spirit, ask for wisdom in your prayer. Pray kneeling:

Upon this prayer, O merciful God, I call the spirit Aziel to your circle four times with a clear voice toward the four quarters of the world, that he may appear in a bright light, in a lovely form, under a bright and clear sky, without wind or rain, without tumult, terror or harm, for your mercy's sake, Amen.

The spirit Aziel can be called at the following hours:

Mondays: before noon at 4 and 5 o'clock; afternoon at 5 and 11 o'clock.
Tuesdays: before noon at 4 and 10 o'clock; afternoon at 2 and 9 o'clock.
Wednesdays: before noon at 7 and 8 o'clock; afternoon at 10 o'clock.
Thursdays: before noon at 7 and 10 o'clock; afternoon at 00.⁸

Great and Mighty Coercion of Hell

When you have punctually observed everything written in the preface, begin the holy work with your companions, falling at God's feet, with this prayer:

I pray you, through Jesus Christ your most beloved Son and through these your most holy names, Agla, Noab, Soter, Emanuel,⁹ that you graciously hear the words of my mouth, and grant me the strength and power that the evil spirits, whom for their pride and their lust for dominion you thrust out of your holy Heaven into the abyss of Hell, that they, when I call them by your might, power and strength, may accomplish all my will and my desire; that I may bind and compel them to appear visibly and willingly in a lovely human form, and not to despise my words, which are joined with your most holy names; by the words of your majesty, Adonai, Ai, Nami, Amar, Semello, Lei, Ursion, by the Last Judgement of Jesus Christ, and by the works of these holy names of your highest majesty, Ohel, Agra, Jod, by which names Solomon forced the spirits into the water. Amoonte, janeha latisten, rabus, janeha latisten escha, aladea, alpha und omega, laiste, oriston, adonai; my most gracious heavenly Father, have mercy on me, a poor sinner, and show me on this day, though I am your unworthy son, the arm of your almighty power against these stiff-necked spirits, so that I, as one hard pressed, may, if it please you, be enlightened with all wisdom, and may always magnify, call upon and worship your holy name. I call upon you and worship you most humbly, that by your will the spirits I call may come as ones overcome and bound, so that they bring such things as are desired by me or by us, and that they hurt no creature, nor frighten any, nor make anyone afraid; but that they may be obedient in everything to my command and to the questions I shall put to them. Nota Bene

Note well: when the spirit comes, hold to your first demand, which must be an odd number. The chief sum of this book is two hundred and ninety-nine thousand ducats, if you have need of so much. The spirit's character must also be copied out separately and laid around the circle, because as soon as the exorcist has read the citations forwards and backwards, he then treads on it with his left foot and stays standing on it until the spirit comes and is bound. The spirit will also test you, offering to give more or less, but you must not consent to that. Otherwise your labour would be in vain, because he gains power by it; rather, keep to your demand.

Mächtige Beschwörungen der höllischen Geister, besonders des Aziel's, daß dieser Schätze und Güter von allerhand Arten gehorsamvoll, ohne allen Aufruhr, Schreckensetzung und Schaden vor den gestellten Krays seiner Beschwörer bringen und zurücklassen müsse.

Einleitung.

Anfänglich dienet dir zur richtigen Nachricht, daß du bei diesem Beschwörungswerke des Geistes Aziel, nicht ihm zu eigen werden müssest, ob Er dich gleich, ihm die Seele mit deinem Blute zu verschreiben, schmeicheln und anlocken wird. Nein! Er wird durch die Kraft deiner vorgebrachten Worte gezwungen werden, dir nach deinem Wunsch und nach deinem unaufhaltsamen Willen unwiderredlich zu gehorsamen und zu thun, was du ihm auferlegst. Verachte daher seine List, und kehre dich nicht daran; halte dich vielmehr an Gott, durch dessen höchste und allmächtige Namen Er dir das Befohlene zitternd überliefern muß: und dir, deiner Seele als dem Leib, Schaden zuzubringen, sich kraftlos befinden wird.

Hernach, ehe du, als Exorcist, dieses Werk vornimmst, ist es deine recht besondere Pflicht, vorher drei Tage zu fasten, zu beten, Almosen zu reichen, zu beichten, zu communiciren, und andere gute und heilige Werke auszuüben. Laß dabei, Gott dem heiligen Geist zu Ehren, drei heilige Messen andachtsvoll lesen, damit er dich erleuchte, seine allmächtige Gnade, den Geist zu bezwingen, dir schenke, und du dein Vorhaben nützlich und mit gutem Glück erreichen mögest.

Drittens muß der Kreis und dieses Buch, so oft du sie gebrauchen willst, von einem ordentlichen und geweihten Priester benedicirt werden, und du einen heiligen Partikel auf deiner Brust tragen. Den Geist aber fordere, daß Er in der freundlichen Gestalt und lieblichen Miene eines zwölfjährigen Jünglings erscheine

Alles, was du thust, verrichte zur Ehre und Verherrlichung Gottes des heil. Geistes. Dann — das schreibe ich noch einmal — durch dessen kräftigen Beistand wirst du den Geist bezwingen, und deine Armuth in Reichthum verwandeln. Dabei aber vergiß ja nicht, in den Wegen des Herrn zu wandeln, und den Armen, den Kirchen und Schulen dein Opfer zu geben; sonst wird dir der erhaltene Reichthum die ewige Qual, statt der vermeinten Freude zuwege bringen.

Das Petschaft oder Siegel des Geistes Aziel welches Er dem Doctor Faust überreichen mußte, die Tage und Stunden, in welchen dieser Geist zu fordern sei, seine Gewalt über die verborgenen Güter, daß man zween Kreise, den einen dem zu erscheinenden Aziel gewidmet; den andern aber, in welchen der Exorcirst mit seinen Gehülfen sich einschließt, neben einander machen müsse, soll in diesem Abschnitt erklärt und bewiesen werden.

Das Petschaft oder Siegel des Aziel's, auf welches der Exorcist mit dem linken Fuß treten muß, ist folgendes:

Die drei Kreise werden gewöhnlich gemacht. Nur bei dem dritten setze hinzu: „Es sei in diesem Kreise ein Pünktlein oder Klüftlein, so wolle Jesus sein heiliges Kreuz dafür stellen, im Namen Gottes des Vaters und des Sohns und des heiligen Geistes † Amen!"

Laus Deo, oremus:

Auf dieses Gebet, o barmherziger Gott, berufe ich den Geist Aziel zu deinem Kreis viermal mit heller Stimme gegen die vier Theile der Welt, daß er in einem hellen Lichte, in lieblicher Gestalt, bei hellem und klarem Himmel, ohne Wind und Regen, ohne Aufruhr, Schrecken und Schaden erscheine, um deiner Erbarmung willen, Amen.

In folgenden Stunden kann der Geist Aziel berufen werden:

Montags: Vormittag um 4 und 5 Uhr. Nachmittag um 5 und 11 Uhr.
Dienstags: Vormittag um 4 und 10 Uhr. Nachmittag um 2 und 9 Uhr.
Mittwochs: Vormittag um 7 und 8 Uhr. Nachmittag um 10 Uhr.
Donnerstags: Vormittag um 7 und 10 Uhr. Nachmittag um 00.
Freitags: Vormittag um 5 und 7 Uhr. Nachmittag um 3 und 12 Uhr.
Samstags: Vormittag um 3 und 9 Uhr. Nachmittag um 5 und 12 Uhr.

Die Himmelszeichen sind diese:
Widder, Löw, Zwilling, Schütz, Waag, Wassermann und die Jungfrau.

Großer und gewaltiger Höllenzwang.

Wenn du alles, was im Vorbericht geschrieben steht, pünktlich beobachtet hast, so fange das heilige Werk mit deinen Gesellen durch folgendes Gebet fußfällig an:

O Allmächtiger Gott und himmlischer Vater! Ich bitte dich durch Jesum Christum deinen allerliebsten Sohn und durch diese deine allerheiligste Namen: Agla, Noab, Soter, Emanuel, du wollest die Worte meines Mundes gnädiglich erhören, und mir die Kraft und Macht verleihen, daß die bösen Geister, welche du, wegen ihres Hochmuths und ihrer Herrschsucht, aus deinem heiligen Himmel in den Abgrund der Hölle verstoßen hast, daß sie, wenn ich sie mit deiner Macht, Kraft und Stärke rufe, allen meinen Willen und mein Begehren vollbringen; daß ich sie binde und bezwinge, sichtbar, willig, in einer lieblichen Menschengestalt zu erscheinen, und meine Worte, welche mit deinen allerheiligsten Namen vereinbart sind, nicht zu verachten, durch die Worte deiner Majestät: Adonai, Ai, Nami, Amar, Semello, Lei, Ursion, bei dem jüngsten Gericht Jesu Christi und durch die Werke dieser heiligen Namen deiner höchsten Majestät: Ohel, Agra, Jod, bei welchen Namen Salomon die Geister in's Wasser gezwungen hat. Solches alles geschehe durch deine göttliche Macht und Kraft, Tetragrammaton, Agla, Adonai, Amen.

So ihr, ihr Geister, die ich benennet und nicht benennet, dieses nicht thun wollet, daß ihr den Geist Aziel, der über alle verborgenen Schätze Gewalt hat, und die unter seiner Botmäßigkeit stehen, zwinget, daß er mir vor diesem Kreise sanftmüthig erscheine und bringe, was ich jetzt begehret: So sollt ihr, ihr Geister, gequälet sein, ja geängstiget, gemartert und gepeiniget werden mit diesen Macht- und Kraftworten: Tetragrammaton, Adonai, Agla und mit dem Blute Jesu Christi, das vor das ganze menschliche Geschlecht vergossen worden. Ewiger Fluch über den Lucifer und seinen Anhang.

Lucifer, Lucifer, Lucifer, du Obrister der Teufel! Nun höre die Stimme meines Mundes durch die Gewalt und Kraft Gottes! Nun trete ich mit meinem Fuße an die Pforte der Hölle durch die Kraft und Gewalt Gottes in dieser Beschwörung, wodurch ich die Thore und Riegel der Hölle aufsprenge und dich, Lucifer sammt deinem Anhange, also quäle, martere und peinige, daß du alle Qual der Verdammten empfinden sollst, und das so lange, bis du mir diesen begehrten Geist Aziel in sichtbarer Menschengestalt eines zwölfjährigen Jünglings gesendet hast. Gebät zu GOtt, welches im Zirkel gegen die vier Theile der Welt gesprochen werden muß.

Nota Bene.

Merke, wenn der Geist kommt, daß du bei dem ersten Begehren bleibest, welches in einer ungeraden Zahl bestehen muß. Die Hauptsumma dieses Buches bestehet in zweihundert und neun und neunzig tausend Dukaten, wenn du soviel von nöthen hast. Auch muß des Geistes Charakter a part abgeschrieben und um den Kreis geleget werden: weilen der Exorzist, sobald er die Citationes vor und rükwärts lieset, alsdenn mit dem linken Fuse darauf tritt, und so lange darauf stehen bleibt, bis der Geist kommt und gebunden ist. Der Geist wird dich auch probiren, mehr oder weniger zu geben, worein du aber nicht willigen darfst. Es wäre sonst deine Mühe umsonst, weilen er dadurch Gewalt bekommt; sondern verbleibe bei deinem Begehren.

Hier bin ich. Was verlangest du von mir, daß du mich so fragest? Nun was ist dein Begehr?

NB. Darauf gib keine Antwort; sondern rede also:

Ich N. nach dem Ebenbilde Gottes erschaffene Kreatur und Mensch, beschwöre dich bei und durch die heiligen Namen Gottes: Tetragrammaton, Adonai, Agla, Jesu Christi; Gib Gott die Ehre und sage, wer du bist!

Empfangung des Geistes.

Sei willkommen, mein guter Geist, Aziel! Weil du nun also auf meine Zitation und Befehl gehorsam gewesen bist und vor meinem Kreise erschienen, so beschwöre und binde ich dich mit diesem Bande der allerheiligsten Macht und Gewalt Gottes, durch die allerheiligsten 5 Worte, die der Priester in der heiligen Messe verwandelt. Ich binde dich durch das allerheiligste und unbeflekte Lamm Gottes, das am Stamme des heiligen Kreuzes für uns geschlachtet worden. Ich binde dich durch die allerheiligste und unbeflekte Jungfrau Maria und durch alle heiligen Namen Gottes: Tetragrammaton, Adonai, Agla, Jesu Christi. Hiermit solst du, Geist Aziel, gebunden sein und von mir nicht entlassen werden, bis du mir meinen Willen durch die Barmherzigkeit Gottes erfüllet und gewähret hast.

Hierauf wird er fragen:

Was verlangest du, daß ich dir geben soll?

Darauf antworte:

Ich verlange Gottes Gnade, Huld und Barmherzigkeit; dich aber, Geist Aziel, beschwöre ich durch die heiligsten Namen: Tetragrammaton, Adonai Agla, Jesu Christi. Durch die Kraft dieser heiligen Namen begehre ich von dir zwei hundert und neun und neunzig tausend Dukaten, in unveränderlicher gangbarer Münze, an Gold, ohne Betrug und Verblendung, zu Gottes Ehre und unserer Seelen Heil, Amen.

Da wird er sich weigern auf alle Weise und Wege und von dir etwas zum Gegentheil verlangen. Gestatte ihm aber nichts; sondern bedrohe ihn mit Citationen.

Abdankung:

So weichet nun wieder von hinnen, sanftmütig, ohne alles Rumoren und Gestank, ohne Verletzung unsers Kreises und unserer aller, die darinnen sind, und lasset uns das Guth, welches uns der Geist Aziel gebracht hat, unversehrt und unveränderlich in diesem unserm Kreise liegen, also daß hinfort von euch Geistern solches unverwandelt und unveränderlich verbleibe. Das gebiete ich und beschwöre euch, Geister alle, bei den allerheiligsten Namen: Tetragrammaton, Agla, Jesu Christi, so wahr als Amen.

Und du, Geist Aziel, verbleibe in deinem Gebiete und in deiner Behausung mit allen deinen Gesellen, wie du mir in Allem versprochen hast.

Nun fahret hin in allem Frieden von diesem Orte, woher ihr gekommen seid, durch unsern lieben Herrn Jesum Christum. Dem sei Lob und Preis in alle Ewigkeit, Amen.
