Doctor Faust's Great and Mighty Sea-Spirit

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

"Move to another land with your treasures. Stay devout; give to the poor and to the monasteries."
— the closing lines of the Meergeist

The Meergeist, "the Sea-Spirit", is one of the small magical books that German popular belief laid at the door of Doctor Johann Faust. It promises the richest and most dangerous of all conjurations: four people, purified by fasting, confession and the Mass, stand by the sea or any other water, inside a circle of beaten tin and a triangle forged from gallows chains, and compel Lucifer to send his three sea-spirits, Forneus, Vepar and Zaleus, to fetch the gold, pearls and jewels that lie in the deep or went down in shipwrecks. The book's own preface tells its legend: Faust wrote it in Latin and left it to his servant Wagner, who misused and lost it; it was buried in 1532 and found again in 1661.

The text bears the imprint "Amsterdam, at Holbeck's, bookseller in the Kohlsteg, Anno 1692", and was reprinted by Johann Scheible of Stuttgart in 1851 as the tenth of the fourteen magical works gathered in Doctor Faust's Bücherschatz. It moves through four kinds of writing: a bookseller's puff for Faust's books, a staged drama in Lucifer's court, plain ritual instructions, and long prayers and curses. The prayers of penance and the dismissal are studded with formulas in other languages, several of which appear to be the same verse of the Psalms (113:3) in Hebrew, Czech, Persian, Turkish, Aramaic, Church Slavonic and Ge'ez. The names of the three sea-spirits, Forneus and Vepar especially, belong to the older catalogues of demons that lie behind the Lesser Key of Solomon.

Translation

X. Doctor Faust's Great and Mighty Sea-Spirit, in which Lucifer and three sea-spirits are conjured to fetch treasure out of the waters.

Amsterdam, at Holbeck's, bookseller in the Kohlsteg, Anno 1692.

That Doctor Faust was the greatest necromancer of his age, and that with the chief of the devils, who through the serving-spirit Mephistophiles, given him as companion, procured and fulfilled for him everything he ever wished, with Beelzebub, I say, he made a pact for 38 years: this will be doubted only by the man who is hemmed in by prejudice and denies that pacts with the Devil exist. But the man of sense, strengthened by the experience of things that still happen every day, knows all too well that the case of Doctor Faust is true, and he stands above the doubts of so unlearned a man. For he has, after all, the magical books that come down from this Doctor and are still used to good profit, provided only that they are genuine and no fraud is mixed into them. These books are found above all in the monasteries, and that is how the greatest wealth is gathered there. And now and then a man has the luck to become a copyist of them, and from his hands they reach the common people too.

Doctor Faust's Great and Mighty Coercion of Hell is the foremost book of necromancy. By it he teaches the world how to conjure Aziel, and Aziel through Lucifer, and Lucifer through the power of God and the holy words and signs, so that Lucifer must command Aziel to bring millions in gold, or whatever one desires. A new edition of it, three sheets long in octavo, has appeared at Prague in the Jesuit college in a clean printing, and has left the press there. And this edition deserves the most splendid preference over all the other Coercions of Hell, which are often very long-winded and yet stuffed with the most intolerable errors. Its editor seems to be a thorough magus, who understands the Oriental languages and has the propositions of divinity in his power. For his treatises are orderly, his expressions binding, and his Hebrew and his doctrine of spirits so forceful that one may safely hold that this corrected Coercion of Hell, purged of all errors, will be of good use; and that everything Doctor Faust composed, now given more elegantly yet without departing from the sense of the matter, will be truly effective and welcome. People already claim good proofs of it.

Yet another book of Doctor Faust, more profitable than the first and needing less labour, is the true and authentic SEA-SPIRIT, which appears after this preface in every particular and in proper order.

This book the learned author, our Faust, to whom the world owes much good but also much evil, had written down in the Latin language, and at his departure from the world he left it by testament to his faithful servant, the well-known Wagner. But Wagner misused it so that he lost it, and it passed from one hand to another, until at last, in the year 1532, a man who had grown rich by it buried it; and there it stayed hidden until at last, in the year 1661, by a turn of fate, it was found again.

The Sea-Spirit is the most dangerous of all the books of necromancy, but also the most profitable. Dangerous it is: for it teaches how four persons, purified and then put under oath, must go down to the sea, or to some other water, which is all the same, and there carry out the conjurations.

They do not have to deal with one spirit, or only a few. The whole host of Hell will appear in its most hideous shapes. Lucifer, in a black cloud above the water, fills it with sulphur so that it burns. Sitting on his throne in the middle of the flames, in the most abominable shape of a monster, he breathes out blue and green fire from his accursed jaws, and it rolls right up to the circle of his conjurers, and out of it spring seven-headed serpents that keep making as if to bite the treasure-seekers, yet can do them no harm.

The necromantic book, the Sea-Spirit, is profitable and needs few hardships. If a man is assured within himself that he has acknowledged and repented of his misdeeds, and has firmly resolved from now on to lead a virtuous life, then, heedless of every assault of the spirits that may come, of their delusions and hindrances, he may boldly set to the work and enter into the conjurations of Lucifer and his three sea-spirits. Their names are Forneus, who appears as a sea-monster; Vepar, like a siren; and Zaleus, like a crocodile. They all come swarming out with many millions of spirits in monstrous shapes, black, whose hair is snakes and whose tongue is fire, terrible to see. Then one may ask of Lucifer as much gold and silver and precious stones as one will, and in general every valuable thing still of use that lies in the sea, or grows there, or went down in shipwreck, and he will at once command his sea-spirits to bring it all. Now they sweep through the ocean and the waters of the earth with all the black spirits, and only one spirit, Paymon, stays to wait on Lucifer.

What a roaring on the sea or in the water, what thunder and lightning in the air, what howling and wailing of the sea-monsters and the beasts of the water is heard then! For even they tremble at the obedience of the infernal spirits, who shoot out from their chief like lightning. The whole journey lasts three minutes. Then Forneus comes racing up in a fair shape on a fire-glowing chariot drawn by Cerberus. He comes, and his driver Furfur reins in Cerberus, who in his fury swells to the size of an elephant and halts before Lucifer's throne. And Amaymon, sent by Lucifer, addresses him thus:

"Obedient servant of Beelzebub our chief, do you come back with goods from the kingdom of the waters, meant for our lord? That is right. You shall go home to your place with a loftier office, too. Through my mouth Lucifer declares you High Treasurer of all the jewels of the sea, and assigns you 29 legions of white spirits with Moors' heads. Come with me before the footstool of our master. Hand over to him the goods you have brought. He will be gracious to you and call you his beloved High Treasurer, a title you have earned by obeying his laws."

Forneus appears before Lucifer, and Lucifer addresses him thus:

"Do you come, then, beloved son of my mighty realm, to pay me your tribute? In what kinds of gold and with what precious stones shall I receive it from you? I am eager to know. Do you see already who must have it? There they stand, those four dwellers on earth, armed with a higher power: they are to receive it. Show me, then, and let me see your treasures!"

Forneus to Lucifer

"Monarch of the boundless realm of darkness, master of the foundations of the earth and the depths of the sea, here I open my treasures, which I lay down in obedience at your feet. They are the purest ducats of Arabia, all of one stamp, and they lay near Smyrna, where they sank in a shipwreck 230 years ago. But what did you say? You mean to give them away? Magnanimous prince, to those dwellers on earth? Only think how many of them threaten to overturn your palace by the words of their master; and still you would be their friend? No, persecute them, and give them nothing."

Lucifer

"Be silent, O Forneus! I must obey. He who made all things commands it of me, and before him I must tremble. He is my only master, and him I cannot overcome. You know it: I dared to become his equal, no more. But then I fell, and Gabriel, who was lower than I before, has now received my rank. No, no, I give them to them, these ducats; to the four dwellers on earth over there I give them. But to you I grant the office of High Treasurer."

Thereupon Vepar appears, like a siren, and brings his dues. He, the most skilful of helmsmen, comes into harbour, and his ship cuts the waves so that you would think a whole fleet came sailing in. His servants unpack, and there are 29 legions of them, and he commands them to lay nothing but precious stones before Lucifer, who makes him his jeweller.

The third sea-spirit, Zaleus, also brings his kinds, and these in the finest silver coins, and for it he is named Keeper of the Silver at Lucifer's court.

Now all the spirits vanish, and only Lucifer and Amaymon remain.

They take on the fairest form of a man and are dressed as merchants from Persia. Lucifer addresses his four opponents:

"It is a bold thing, to be sure, that you have dared to step up to the gate of our palace, and have even pressed forward before my throne. Lucky for you that you are clothed with a higher power. Otherwise you would be made to repent of this outrage. I would tear you apart and torment your souls. As we see, there are only four of you; but where is the fifth, and the sixth, and the seventh? If you want gold and diamonds from us, there must be seven of you."

Exorcist

"Four people, reconciled through the blood of Jesus, who has taken from you your power over us, have four souls. Lucifer, you renegade angel of God, and Amaymon your servant, damned forever with you, you are two spirits; and this cock, black all over, has a soul as well. That makes seven. And now hear. Anti tipaquelu Lapquemo quetu tanni layamno conmeque Dios ni vuy ubchyquevela,1 renegade, obey at once and bring us all this money lying there before you as our own property; otherwise Jehova Elohim Aph, ben vefados ruach, ascher agla, zedek vepereschit quaru haschammajim veet haaretz2 shall cast you into every torment that can be thought of in the stinking pool of Hell, and through it you shall be tormented a hundred thousand times more than you are tormented now." How quickly, though in rage and fury, he will lay the treasures down three paces in front of the circle, and ask besides whether you would like anything more! But you must not answer him on that; instead you must speak thus:

"Depart from here, you angel of pride, and recoil in misery into your torment, which you wrought for yourself. But may God give us the grace to use these goods in due order, without hanging our hearts on them. And therefore also: do no stoka slooza zapada hualno ime Gospodno!3 Kä tu Satana, hyppage se is ton orkon.4 Schalom lechem!5 Amen."

See the Twenty-First Figure

{Fig. XXI: a circle whose ring is written round with unreadable characters and crosses; within it a triangle with its corners marked c (top), b (left) and d (right), and a small rectangle marked a at its centre. Below the circle, a sign: a cross over a downward triangle over three nested chevrons hung with upright strokes.}

{A second leaf of signs without lettering: a pyramid of circles, stars and crosses, and five figures of lines, hooks and loops.}

Four persons bound together it must be, to conjure Lucifer into giving up the jewels of the sea and the waters.

Purity, virtue and obedience must be the goal set before them as they begin their course. So: fasting and prayer; repentance for the misdeeds they have done; confession of them before the priest, who must hold four holy Masses for them; abstinence from women and from drunkenness; strengthening of their resolve by the means of grace. These are the requirements for these four persons.

Outwardly, they must be dressed thus. The first must wear a black garment, to show that sin has blackened them and made them children of dark and black Hell. The second must be dressed in red, to signify that their sins were blood-red. The third is to dress in white, as a sign that, since they have given themselves to God again, their blood-red sins have become white as snow. And lastly the exorcist, in the middle of the triangle, must wear a blue garment, by which the sure grace of Heaven is signified.

The Making of the Circle

The circle must be put together from good sheet-tin, into which the names already given are to be struck, and at every blow one speaks the words: Strengthened against all evil spirits and devils.

The triangle that is then to be laid inside it is to be made thus:

Take three chains from the gallows, and the nail from the wheel that was driven through the head of a man broken on the wheel, and forge the two together in the night of Good Friday between eleven and twelve o'clock, saying at every blow: Peter, bind! Strike at it until it has reached the size of a triangle in which four persons can turn and move, and solder it together with copper.

When the circle is finished, which must measure three ells across, and the holy work of the conjuration is to go forward, lay it down before a water, six ells away from it. Sprinkle the place with holy water, and pour glowing coals, salt and frankincense on it. Change your shoes over, and you who are only the witnesses step onto the corners of the triangle, all three divided so that the one dressed in black comes to stand at the place marked b, the red one takes c, and the white one d.

But each of you is to hold in the right hand a wax candle that has burned beside the bier of a corpse lying in state and has afterwards been blessed by a priest, and in the left hand a sword. The exorcist, for his part, is to lay a piece of linden wood, likewise cut three-cornered, in the triangle, and step onto it barefoot, after he has put on a leather cap and bound about his loins the cloth on which executioners are wont to wipe their sword when they have beheaded a poor sinner.

The Binding of the Circle

"Lord of hosts, mighty and strong God, we, your afflicted creatures living in poverty, whom you formed after your image, appear now in this hour before you with good intent, to exchange this our poverty for riches by your grace and help. Grant that this our circle may be so made fast by your divine names that every assault of the evil spirits must give way, that they must stand in shame, and that we may be kept safe from them by your protection and shelter. If Satan would ensnare us and call out all his host against us, then step forth, Jesus, Saviour and Reconciler of mankind, in the splendour of your majesty, and say: Do not touch my purified ones, you accursed and ungrateful! Let them be driven to bring before this our circle the jewels of the sea and the waters, whether they grow there or sank into them by misfortune, as much as we ask; and may you also stake out this circle with your holy cross and bind it.

"To you also, Third Person of the Godhead, we pray with this petition: give us power and strength to fight like lions against these enemies of Heaven and of mankind, so that by the working of your word we drive them into such a corner that they must do our will and bring us the jewels of the waters, whatever and however much we ask, in quiet and peace. But so that they do not come near us, and must lay the goods they bring down at a distance from us, make this circle fast also with the Father and the Son.

"O holy Trinity, we pray you, let this our circle stay fast and bound by your word until we open it again by the same. And so: Es meschrik ta machrib situdeh baschet nam chodawend,6 † † †, Amen."

Prayer of Penance

To God the Father

"Od wycho du Slunee azna zapad chwalitebne gest gmeno Panie!7 Jehova adone i u zebaoth, aph haschamajim velol haarez. ascher kol jippor veolam Kadosch agla vezadik.8 We, your created beings, draw near to your most holy throne in deepest reverence, and without the robe of righteousness that counts before you. Lord, we have done wickedness before your face, and so we have become children of the fire that will never go out. Already we find pains, oppressions and gnawing unrest in our body as well as in our soul. Our sins attack us and cause us the sharpest pangs of conscience, which almost wear us away. Now we see that those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways are to be blessed with the goods of earthly fortune here, and made happy there in Heaven with the goods that do not perish. But our misdeeds have cost us both. Here we walk in poverty and anguish, without your grace, and there it will be more unbearable still, when our worm does not die, our fire is not quenched, and we shall be an abhorrence to all flesh. For that is the place after our parting from this earth that we must surely enter, soul and body. And afterwards we shall have our vices to reproach for it, which as the instruments of our seduction will mock us. But if this is so, why then, we will act so no more, but seek out virtue. We will fall into the hand of the Lord and would rather be punished here than there. If you chasten us, Lord, on earth, it is no punishment, it is love. But whoever is punished after the end of the earth is punished forever, and that punishment is called the eternal wrath of God. Lord, we acknowledge that we have offended you, Father, and have not behaved toward you as obedient children. We see that our ways point toward Hell, instead of leading us to Heaven. We will turn back, and we ask your forgiveness. Show us your salvation, and it will be well with us, and we shall be healed. For there is nothing sound in us, only wounds, welts and boils, not bound up nor eased with oil.

"Ah, Father, we are sorry that we have been godless. Father, forgive: for we did not know what we were to do. So far had evil driven us into a corner. We are sorry, and we want to be your children again, so that we do not turn your love into wrath and tear down the building. See, merciful Father, here we lie before you, not on our own righteousness but on your grace, and we do penance. Cleanse us of our sins. Let us also soon enjoy your blessing on earth, and share with us some of the goods of this temporal life, so that by them we may praise and laud you and already taste beforehand the goods of Heaven. For this we ask you again, as we say: Mimischrach schemesch at-mebhoo mehüllal schem Jehova9 † Amen."

To God the Son

"Maschrikden magribge ad Alla ugilegekdur!10 Jehova Adon schmajim veet haarez ben Jusu, Emanuel, Maschiach, Jehova aela vehaisch, schilo, ascher Kadosch vecol hakedoschim.8 Lord Jesus, Son of God and of man, compassionate Saviour and our Redeemer! You say in your word: Come to me, all of you, I will refresh you. Called by this saying of your grace, we draw near to your merciful heart, but with the greatest dejection and shame at our renegade conduct. We have lost the way to Heaven, and we see that it was a great fault that made us unhappy. We have despised your love and honoured the world with its lust. We did not think of our misery, born in us from Eve, nor did your redemption come into our minds. So we rushed on, foolhardy, untroubled as to what would come in the future.

"Ah Lord, now the blindfold falls from our eyes. We notice that we carry the whole of Hell, with all its torments and terrors, in this our hut of the earthly body. Neither by day nor in the hours of night have we rest. Everything we undertake fails. Our goods are gone and our means scattered. Our planting, our sowing, all our labours, which press the hardest sweat out of us, are in vain. The plants wither and the seed rots, and in their place we reap thorns and thistles. Only sin and the lusts of the world are our goods, and they have taken us over entirely. But because of this, since on the contrary we lack all the blessing of the eternal Godhead and all salvation, we fall behind and must very nearly take the beggar's staff in hand. And still we shall have to live in unrest, estranged from your grace. So we see that we have done wrong and have offended the holy Trinity,11 and so you also, the second Person in it, who spent so much toil for our redemption, and for our reconciliation with the great Godhead were so cruelly treated, and even had to taste the bitterness of death. How angry you must be with us! Ah Lord Jesus, turn this anger into love, into grace, into mercy. Have pity on us, weakened by sin. We beg you, forgive us our outrages, which we committed on purpose. Release us from our debts, and help, so that the Lord does not destroy us in his anger. We want to become your children again, your followers. Give us the grace to have and to know a true delight in your sanctuary. Your sins are forgiven you. Bless our going out and our coming in, and let our fruits and our crops on our few fields and hills thrive a hundredfold, so that we gain the most cogent reason to praise you, set foot on the path of the virtues that bring rest, and so further our salvation. Jehova kadosch ben Elohim, zidkenu veet jischienu, gillenu, malkenu veadonnenu:8 help us, God of our salvation, for the sake of your merits, † Amen."

To God the Holy Spirit

"Mammadnach schimscha ad mithmäeh maschabach schima dajaja!12 Jehova kadosch ruach, ascher aphilu leaph veet lebenn haschamajim veet kol haerez para? adonnenu, bael baggadol hagibbor vehannora takiph, Elohim, ascher schochenati.8 God the Holy Spirit, our comforter in every need! To you too we come with trembling hearts and anguished souls. We are the fallen-away of God and the most wicked servants of sin, which locks the hardest bonds on us, holds us so fast in its service, and flatters us so that we cannot get free. Lord, we seek you, and we would become other people. We appear laden with sins, it is true; yet we are sorry to be so stained, and we have resolved to wash our garments and make them bright through the redemption of the Crucified. Lead us, then, to where we find rest for our souls and are cleansed of all vices. For our fear is great, and our vices bend us toward terrible damnation. Help us, Lord, and we are helped. Stand by those who would turn back, with your grace and help, so that we do not perish. For already we are stripped of all goods and live in poverty, forsaken in this life; and, O God! what will it look like there? All in us is corruption, and the soul brings forth no virtuous thought. That is our harm, in Heaven as on earth. Ah God, and did we not see it? With you, we, your dust, which came to be by your word and lived, given soul by your breath, with you we would contend? What audacity! But what will a man not undertake who is parted from God! We perceive all this conduct in ourselves, and we see that it cannot go on so any longer. Otherwise we would have to become unhappy. To escape this misfortune, then, we pray: help, and cleanse us of our sins. Create in us a new and thoughtful spirit, so that we no longer stray so, but walk constantly in the ways of the Lord and may gather treasures for the time to come before the throne of the Almighty. Mimmadnach deschemscha ad maar beh jetrebam schema demari12 † Amen."

Note

The prayers of penance must be said with devotion. They may be performed at home, so that the business does not last too long.

The following prayer must be spoken in the circle:

"In ge tu y ge sy San mim ta chu!13 Most holy union of three Persons in one Godhead, we have confessed our sins to you, repented of them, and are still firmly minded to practise virtue and to walk constantly in your ways, for which we once more seek your support and guidance. For without you we can do nothing, and without you this our citation would be in vain. Propped on your help, we pray again thus:

"Almighty God, cleansed by your grace, we now stand again in the book of life; now we have access to God through the redemption that came about through Jesus, and we are assured that you will stand by us and help us in our undertaking, to which need drives us, so that we may ban and compel LUCIFER, the rebel of God's state in Heaven, to appear before us as a humble spirit, by the power of your Godhead and of the holy names that are found in this book and read out with devotion, and to fulfil our will by bringing up lost goods out of the water and the precious things that grow there; so that your Godhead may be praised by it, and we may be set in good circumstances and, through the wealth that has come to us, found much good in your state on earth. So equip us to speak with Satan, and do not let us fall into terror or stand before him in shame. For otherwise he only mocks you and laughs at us. Let him bow before us like a worm and creep around our circle like a snail, so that he may learn yet again that you are the Lord whom all things serve and before whom all pride is thrown down. For this we ask you, for the sake of your love for the human race, † Amen."

Dreadful Curse upon Lucifer

"Hound of Hell, spirit hurled for your pride into the abyss of fiery damnation, now I stand in thought, with a brave heart, in the middle of the swarm of devilish Furies before the hinge of your prison, and I burst its bonds and locks by the high and eternal power of the All-Powerful, whom you meant to master and to equal in rank, but who made you feel the sword of Gabriel and every misery, and threw you down from your height. I open the black-burnt gate of Hell and say: Es meschrik ta machrib situdeh basched nam chudawend.6

"An oath upon you! Out, great Satan, whom the other Satans curse for your horrible apostasy, since through you they became wretched too; whom men damn and God has cast away. An oath upon you! Malice worthy of scorn, unworthy creature of God, who disfigures the whole creation, crawl forth from the accursed gullet where all grief, all sorrow, all sighing and all pain dwell and threaten to spread through the world, and hear your chapter, which we will read out to you.

"An oath upon you. Tempter of God and of his dwellers on earth, leave your fiery caves and appear before us, who are armed with God. Hurry and break through the terrors of Hell into the light, and this by the A and O, the first and the last, the King of all monarchs, who is called Jod agla, nabrath El abiel amathi Enathiel Amazin sedomel gayes taluna Elias ischiros, athanatos hymaas heli Meßias.

"An oath upon you: do you know Jesus, your conqueror, who took all power from you, and thrust you into the lowest darkness, where howling and gnashing of teeth torment one another without end, and chained you there? At his most mighty command, which comes to you through my mouth, you shall come.14

"Enemy of God and of mankind, accursed angel of pride and chief of the falling-away, is your pain still not fierce enough, that you are so full of defiance and do not appear? Then may all hail and sulphur and every plague strike you, and burn so deep into your damned existence that you become almost nothing. May it be done through your conqueror Jesus, who suffered in innocence, died for us in innocence, rose in innocence, and now, in the union of the glorified humanity by whose assumption he has honoured us, sits as God-and-man on his divine throne of omnipotence at the right hand of the heavenly Father; whom you too had angered, yes, against whom you first dared yourself in your dreadful fall; who had you cut off by the angel Gabriel from the legions of the God-praising and devout angels and thrust with your band out of Heaven into damnation; who in his death on earth, which he suffered for us, chained you still further and took all power from you, so that you, still unmindful of your deep misery, spewed out fire and flames and bubbling smoke, and yet had to go down in defeat. May this great and mighty God, before whom the worlds quake, increase your torments in the boiling lake of fire for your disobedience and your cursed stubbornness, until you can no longer even think that you are a spirit! And these torments do not last only a long time: they last so, that when one eternity ends, the next begins, and so without end.

"An oath upon you! The Lord has cast you away, you old serpent, you roaring lion who goes about seeking whom he may devour; he has cast you away as a mirror for the devout. Be ashamed, damned creature, whom God had enlightened so highly that you fell in spite of it, so wantonly, and certainly with open eyes.

"An oath upon you! That was no great wonder, fallen angel, to lie to a weak woman on earth and lead her astray, as you showed your valour on Eve. You won, it is true, and Eve fell with her descendants. But our fall was only a fall coaxed out of us by flattery, which was wiped out of the book of sin again by Christ's atonement and written down to you instead. You meant to open our eyes, and now your own will have been opened better still, but to your trembling.

"Accursed rebel in the state of God, we are children of God again. An oath upon you! But what are you, then? An angel of his wrath, whom God's punishment strikes harder every moment. All our sins, which the whole human race has committed by your prompting and will still commit, shall, if you do not appear and fulfil our will, strike you, throw you to the ground, and stamp you about in the pit of Hell that burns with pitch and sulphur.

"An oath upon you! Just as you must once more appear before the eyes of men at God's judgement and hear your sentence made heavier, when at last the devout will see through all your schemes and praise God highly for having protected them against you through your angels,15 and when the godless too will curse you for having deceived them so shamefully: even so you are bound to appear before us.

"An oath upon you, Lucifer, with your band: come forth out of the dwelling of your misery and follow the power of God, who may yet be gracious to you. Hear us, and do not stubbornly refuse to fulfil what we ask of you in the name of God. Ymsyraka: zabai: wayskan: arab: iytakuat: syimu: laygziabher!16 † Amen."

Speak this curse three times. Lucifer will appear and act quite frightened, yet still resist, as stated above, and you must meet that too according to the instructions above. Then the exorcist addresses him:

"Lucifer, Lucifer, Lucifer, chief of Hell, if you have heard our word in your seat and been so shaken by it that you are to obey us, then know now that we, armed with God, have appeared here to command you that you are bound to have brought to us four purified persons, to each as much gold and silver and precious stones as amounts to a million, and four millions in all, from the jewels that are sunk in the waters and that grow in them; so that the name of vaycheon stimulamaton exphares tetragrammaton olyoron irion esytion exystion, criona onela brasym noym, Meßisother, Emanuel, Sabaolh adon may be praised, and, if it be possible, your pain grow milder.

"Will you now obey our strict command, or shall Lechebot, El Jemahran, Jehova eloah aph, Jehova naarez, ascher schoch ad adon hael hackadoll fehagibbor fehannora du Jehofa Elohim, ascher kadosch hackedoschim compel you through us?

"Shall Jehofa sabaoth Eloha benn, Jod Jehofa schadai, Eljon Jehova, nora melech gadola chachaurez! Jehofa leolahm, Eloha Zion, Jehova hapore, Jehofa zidekenu, Jehova Elohim gibbor, hagios hagiotaton, Jehofa ari Maschiach, Schilo, Jehofa, ascher kadosch fekoll hackedoschim fetter you still more than he who bound you in Hell, when he became your conqueror?

"Shall Jehofa Ruach kadosch, with the Seraphim and Cherubim, chastise you still more through the sword of God's justice, or will you obey and fulfil our desire?"

Address him three times with this curse, and he will become so willing that he commands his spirits to bring four millions in jewels out of the water. Then he speaks as was noted above, and you must act accordingly.

The dismissal stands earlier in the book.17

When you now have the money and the precious stones, and Lucifer is gone, thank God with the psalm O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, and then leave the circle, which you must throw into the water with everything belonging to it.

Move to another land with your treasures.

Stay devout; give to the poor and to the monasteries.

Source Text (German)

Doctor Faust's großer und gewaltiger Meergeist, from J. Scheible, Doctor Faust's Bücherschatz, part 2 (Stuttgart, 1851), pp. 288–304; transcribed from BSB 10132968.

Man will gar schon gute Proben versichern.

Und Amaymon, abgeordnet vom Lucifer, redet ihn also an:

Forneus erscheinet vor dem Lucifer, und Lucifer redet ihn also an;

Weise also und laß mich deine Schätze sehen!

Aber was sagtest du?

Und deshalben auch do no stoka slooza zapada hualno ime Gospodno! Kä tu Satana, hyppage se is ton orkon. Schalom lechem! Amen.

Sihe die XXI. Figur.

{Fig. XXI. — a, b, c, d.}

{Blatt ohne Beschriftung.}

Od wycho du Slunee azna zapad chwalitebne gest gmeno Panie! Jehova adone i u zebaoth, aph haschamajim velol haarez. ascher kol jippor veolam Kadosch agla vezadik.

Jehova Adon schmajim veet haarez ben Jusu, Emanuel, Maschiach, Jehova aela vehaisch, schilo, ascher Kadosch vecol hakedoschim. Herr Jesu, Sohn Gottes und der Menschen, mitleidsvoller Heiland und unser Erlöser! Du sprichst in deinem worte: Kommet her zu mir alle, ich will euch erquicken.

Alles, was wir unternemen, mislingt. Ach Herr Jesu, verwandle disen zorn in libe, in gnade, in erbarmung.

Jehova kadosch ruach, ascher aphilu leaph veet lebenn haschamajim veet kol haerez para? adonnenu, bael baggadol hagibbor vehannora takiph, Elohim, ascher schochenati. Gott heiliger Geist, du Tröster in aller Noth!

So sollen tich alle Hagel unt ter schwefel unt alle plage treffen unt so tief in tein vertamtes tasein brennen, taß tu fast zu nichts wertest.

Was bist du denn aber?

Notes

Footnotes

  1. Printed so. The language has not been identified; the word Dios, "God", suggests that it is meant as a tongue of the New World or of Spain. Left untranslated. ↩

  2. Garbled Hebrew, as are the other strings of divine names in this book. Recognisable words include Jehova Elohim ("the LORD God"), ruach ("spirit"), ascher ("who"), agla (the cabbalistic name formed from Atah gibbor le-olam Adonai), zedek ("righteousness") and haschammajim veet haaretz ("the heavens and the earth", as in Genesis 1:1). Left as printed. ↩

  3. This appears to be Psalm 113:3 in a Slavonic language, "from the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised" (compare Church Slavonic ot vostok solntsa do zapad khvalno imya Gospodne). ↩

  4. Greek in rough transliteration: kai su, Satana, hypage ("and you, Satan, get hence"), followed by words that appear to mean "into the oath" or "to the pit" (eis ton horkon, or Orcus). Left as printed. ↩

  5. Hebrew, "peace be with you". ↩

  6. This appears to be Psalm 113:3 in Persian: az mashriq tā maghrib sitūda bāshad nām-i khudāvand, "from the east to the west be the name of the Lord praised". ↩ ↩2

  7. This appears to be Psalm 113:3 in Czech: od východu slunce až na západ chvalitebné jest jméno Páně, "from the rising of the sun to the setting the name of the Lord is to be praised". ↩

  8. Strings of Hebrew divine names and epithets, in garbled transliteration: Kadosch ("holy"), ben Elohim ("son of God"), Maschiach ("Messiah"), schilo ("Shiloh", Genesis 49:10), zidkenu ("our righteousness"), malkenu ("our king"), hagibbor vehannora ("the mighty and the awesome") and others. Left as printed. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4

  9. Psalm 113:3 in Hebrew: mi-mizrach shemesh ad mevo'o mehullal shem YHWH, "from the rising of the sun to its going down the name of the LORD is praised". ↩

  10. This appears to be Psalm 113:3 in Ottoman Turkish, beginning maşrıktan mağribe dek Allah ("from the east to the west, God…"); the last word appears to be övülecektir, "shall be praised"; the rest is too corrupt to restore. ↩

  11. The print reads Zeinigkeit, evidently a misprint for Dreieinigkeit, "Trinity". ↩

  12. This appears to be Psalm 113:3 in Aramaic (Syriac): men madnaḥ shimsha ʿad maʿrbeh mshabbaḥ shmeh d-Māryā, "from the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is praised". The closing formula of the same prayer seems to be another form of it. ↩ ↩2

  13. Printed so. Not identified; perhaps meant as Chinese. Left as printed. ↩

  14. From "torment one another" here to "out of Heaven into damnation" in the next paragraph, the 1851 print sets t for d in most words (unt ter for und der, tich for dich). It is kept so in the source; the English translates the sense. ↩

  15. So the print (durch deine Engel); perhaps a slip for "his angels". ↩

  16. This appears to be Psalm 113:3 in Ge'ez (Classical Ethiopic): əm-məśraqa ḍaḥāy wa-əskä ʿarab … səmu la-Əgziʾabəḥer, "from the rising of the sun to the setting … the name of the Lord". The middle word is too corrupt to restore. ↩

  17. That is, in the speech "Depart from here, you angel of pride…" given after the exorcist's words to Lucifer. ↩
