"For as broad as the cloak is, so much room you have in the air and in every place."
— CAP. LVIII, on the cloak-journey
The Dreifacher Höllenzwang, the "Threefold Coercion of Hell", is one of the largest of the magical books that German tradition laid at the door of Doctor Johannes Faust. In 1849 Johann Scheible of Stuttgart printed it complete, in five divisions, from a richly illuminated manuscript in the ducal library at Coburg, under the title Magia naturalis et innaturalis; the manuscript's coloured pictures fill 146 plates. This is the third division: chapters LIII to LXXII and plates 60 to 74, closing with the words "End of the First Part of the Magia innaturalis".
It is the most practical stretch of the book. After a general citation for the spirits of the seven free arts, it passes through the spirits of the elements: the seven great Fire-Spirits; the eight Air-Spirits, who carry a man through the air on his cloak, raise a phantom garden and beds of flowers, make a thunderstorm, turn bullets aside, bring singing birds and teach alchemy; the Water-Spirit Hydriel, a Melusine; and the Earth-Spirit Buriel, under whom live the Pygmies, little men who come to a table laid on a green hill, read the petition left for them, and ask of the magician only an honest and quiet life. Then come the works of the magician's own hands: the Finding-Ball cast from seven metals in seven planetary hours, a Question-Ball made over twelve midnights, a mirror buried nine Fridays in a dead man's grave, a bell of electrum, crystals and a steel mirror consecrated with Masses, and visions in a glass of water, in the palm of the hand and in a boy's crystal.
Faust speaks throughout in the first person, at times questioning his spirit Mephistophiles. The conjurations are long strings of voces magicae, Hebrew divine names and broken Latin, and they are given exactly as printed. Plate 73, to which the chapters on the mirror and the bell refer, is bound at the very end of the division and is given there; the plates are described in braces, with the words written on them.

CAP. LIII.
Treats of the seven free spirits: how one may enter into a contract with them in such a way as to share in their arts and sciences, and use them each to his own profit.
I, Faust, say to you, O man: choose yourself an art, whichever you will; then call the spirit for it too, as you would have him. But you must call him on a Friday, at midnight, at 12 o'clock, and indeed in the following manner, as follows:
Citation.
I, N., call you, spirit N., by Jaicern † Imatha † Alhima † Elohim † Bathagehim † Jehova †. I, N., call you, spirit N., through Rolamicon † Hipite † Agla † Elohim † Reremisch † Jehova †. I, N., conjure you, spirit N., through Roreipse † loisant † et Dortam † Bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † o Jehova † et prasa Deus † Jata † Adonay † oyii †. I, N., call you, spirit N., also by Mihim † Melo at Agla †, and through Jesus †, the Son of David †, the Son of the true God † hinteste mihi † Amen.
Before you cite, make a circle round about you with these words.
O Adam † Noah † Abraham † Isaac † and Jacob † God the Father be by me † God the Son † be with me † God the Holy Spirit † be over me † that no misfortune may befall me †. Jesus be my support † God the Father, be my helper, † God the Holy Spirit † be my protector † that no spirit may harm me † Amen.
Say this three times.
And when the spirit comes, you must ask him whether he will serve you; and if he now says Yes, you must make terms with him as you will. In this way you may deal with all the spirits of the seven free arts.
CAP. LIV.
Now follow the seven great Fire-Spirits in their order.
These, then, are called by their names thus:
Adiel belongs among the barons.
Amudiel, Kiriel } are noble spirits.
Azeruel, Ergediel, Abdicuel } these are burgher spirits.
Amediel belongs among the peasant spirits.
With their five servants, who are called by their names thus, as stands below:
Geliel.
Rumiel.
Requiel.
Aprinel.
Tagriel.
{Plate 60: 60. — The Forms of the Seven Great Fire-Spirits. — Abdicuel. — Adiel. — Kiriel. — Ergediel. — Amediel. — Azeruel. — Amudiel. [Seven coloured (red) winged devil-figures with their names written beside them: Abdicuel as a small devil with bat's wings; Adiel as a many-limbed figure with a great horned face, bat's wings and a crest of flame; Kiriel as a flying creature with insect's wings, spitting fire; Ergediel as a horned dragon with a serpent's tail; Amediel as a winged griffin- or lion-shape; Azeruel as an upright winged bear, spitting fire; Amudiel as a small winged devil with a tail]}
CAP. LV.
Treats of the Fire-Spirits, with a particular account of them: what help and service they can give to men.
Namely thus:
These spirits do not willingly serve men, nor are they truly well disposed to men, except to workers in fire and to soldiers. They keep always about the sun. One can also learn from them how one should seek one's fortune in the world, with kings or among the lower estates; and when their wind blows, that is the south wind, they come soonest of all. Their highest principal among the angelic spirits is called Jovis, and his head is called Sachiel, a throne-angel of the holy Jehova; that is why they are still somewhat well disposed to men.
Whoever wants further knowledge of them may call them before him, but without a circle, for they do men no harm.
These spirits come slowly, and are called on Tuesday at night; they can also be cited and called at other times; only this is to be understood of the Tuesday calling, that they are to be called the first time on a Tuesday at night, and the first citation must take place at that time.
The forms of Adiel and of the other spirits now follow, one after another.
(See Plate 60.)
CAP. LVI.
Treats of the citation of the 7 great and 5 small Fire-Spirits.
I, N., call you, spirit N., before me through Jeschag † Elohim † Ascham † Paradise † and through your Sud Rex † Deischampa † Meschca † Fiam † come, Jesus † Sisma † Jehova † Maeschcamia † Paliam † Effa †. I, N., call you, spirit N., through Hipite † Agla † Elohim † Reremisch † Jehova †. I, N., conjure you, spirit N., through Roreipse † Loisant † et Dortam bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † o Jehova † prasa Deus † oyii † Moischle † N. sup coelum † Moaschee † Fuisme † Spiritus † amenisch.
The Circle.
These spirits do men no harm, so no circle is needed; but if you will take one, take the circle of all the spirits.
CAP. LVII.
Treats of the eight great Air-Spirits in their order.
These spirits, namely the Air-Spirits, serve men for nothing more than for arts; yet they also differ among themselves, thus: Coradiel serves men for good fortune in every misfortune; he warns a man of his misfortune, and if he is already in misfortune, he helps him out of it again. Sumniel,1 also an Air-Spirit, is given to mastery; he serves craftsmen in all arts and in quite special inventions.
Coachiel, also an Air-Spirit, is given to chymistry or alchymy; laboratory-men who work in minerals, or wish to work in them, may inquire of him, for from him they can learn how to turn the base minerals into something better. If you would have them before you, make no circle, for these spirits do men no harm. They are called by their names, as stands below:
Coradiel.
Sumnidiel.
Coachiel.
Damniel.
Barbiel.
Adatiel.
Pedartiel.2
Caffiel.
These are all called, in general, with the following citation:
I, N., call you, spirit N., through Comaschkün, Loaschkü3 bodes Jehova, Mercurii, Ascham, Venuaischca, Lonaschkü, metias, Voocommeum, Loschüika, Mola Mercurii, et Sola. I, N., call you, spirit N., through Rolamicon † hipite † Agla † Elohim † Reremisch † Jehova †. I, N., conjure you, spirit N., through Rolamicon † Roreipse † Loisant et Dortam † Bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † o Jehova † expressa Deus † o Aglam † Meschca † Conschca † Meoschei † Deum et Lemischca † Amy † Jemü † Aschcalam in Medasch † meas Schaedas † Amy † Amenisch.
But if you wish to learn a particular science from one of these spirits, namely, if you wished to be quickly at some place and to travel through the air on your cloak, then cite the Count Adatiel with the following words:
Adatiel's Citation
follows after his form. (See Plate 61.)
CAP. LVIII.
Adatiel's Citation.
I, N., cite you, Adatiel, by virtue of Lunay † Posmoldajos † Adatielis Martale: Aer posama ibite † Adatielis, Sisamas, Porteva, Lucifer. I, N., call you, spirit Adatiel, through Rolamicon † Hipite † Agla † Elohim † Reremisch † Jehova †. I, N., conjure you, spirit Adatiel, through Roreipse † Loisant et Dortam † Bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † o Jehova † Prasa Deus † Moger, Jof, Adatielis, Spist, Aer, Quas, Soll, Lucifer, o Dudis et Odudisema, Asidajel, Radadiel, Mododiel, Jyelis, Pordaldiel, amen. And when you wish to travel, take your cloak and go from the door into the open part of the room or chamber, only so that there is as much room around you as the cloak takes up; for as broad as the cloak is, so much room you have in the air and in every place. For your good guidance, mark this advantage from my teaching, so that you will not regret the cloak-journey. Take the cloak, then, around your body and head, so that they keep room enough; and when you have laid the cloak down, step into the middle of it and cite Adatiel with the words already given above, and a wind will at once carry you away into the air. But after the citation is made, keep as still as a mouse and speak no more words. Now turn your face toward where you wish to travel, and at once take into your mouth the character that stands by Adatiel's figure; then you will set yourself down lightly, without harm. And when you wish to come back home again, do as at first. That is my art.
{Plate 61: 61. — Adatiel's Form. — A — S — E [A horned devil's head with red eyes and claws beneath a great blue folded cloak; above, two circles with red characters (in the right one the letters A and S on a cross) and a black character between them; below, two rows of black and red characters, among them a red hourglass- or triangle-sign with dots, and at the very bottom a black key-like character with E]}
{Plate 62: 62. — Damniel's Form [A man in a yellow straw hat and a blue coat, with a bunch of flowers in his hand and a basket of apples and grapes on his arm, beside a tree]}
On Plate 61 is the character for the cloak-journey; take it into your mouth, as you were taught by me before; but it must first be written on a consecrated host.
Note. If you would have a vision of a costly garden with all kinds of costly foreign fruits and flowers, cite Damniel, whose form and citation follow here. (See Fig. 62.)
CAP. LIX.
Damniel's Citation.
When Damniel is to present to you all kinds of garden plants and fruits, cite him thus:
I, N., command you, spirit Damniel, through Mossaray † Iphömis † Damniel positat † Lucifer et Fincit † Dada † Damnielis suo: Ego bota † Rolamicon † Hipite † Aglam † Elohim † Reremisch †. I, N., conjure you, spirit Damniel, through Roreipse † Loisant et Dortam † bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † o Jehova † Prasa Deus † Malum et Birum, cata sacseimbumleum, Damnielis, amen.
When you have spoken these words 3 times, a fair garden of the costliest foreign fruits will at once appear before you. But take good care not to let yourself be tempted to pluck anything, or it will go ill with you. And when you have delighted yourself enough with the sight, dismiss him from you by the following 3 words:
G. V. G. S.4
Hicücolschamile † Omascalüs †
G. H. G.
Emülis amam cordes †
So much for the art of making garden-plants; but they cannot be eaten as men eat fruit.
CAP. LX.
Treats of how one can procure all kinds of flowers through Damniel.
The citation for it runs as follows:
Ego N. propter, through Elohim †, to you, spirit Damnielis † Jundahabis dedem † Damnielis Hochipita † Cahaytesebca † amtes bisithissalla † Sand Damnielis habitas Sola Contersahahay. et Fincit habita Cotta, quiavit o Jehova † o Adonay prasa Deus amen.
{Plate 63: 63. — Caffiel's Form [A naked, horned, hairy devil stands before dark storm-clouds with yellow flashes of lightning and holds a bundle of thunderbolts in his raised hand; on the left a burning tree-stump struck by lightning; round the edge eight large black and red characters (at the top a black parallelogram-sign with x, on the left a red sign with small circles, on the right, among others, a black sign like „Ͻ w“ and a black sign of T-shaped strokes)]}
This citation is spoken three times; at once all kinds of the costliest flowering plants are before you. And when you have seen your fill of them at your pleasure, dismiss him from you again with the following words, as they stand here below.
G. V. G. S.
Jischca † Aschcalii †
G. H. S.
Jehoosalms. †
So much for the art of making flower-work.
If you would make a thunderstorm, cite Caffiel. (See Plate 63.)
If you would make a thunderstorm, so that all the people are terrified by it, then set to, make a confusion among the Air-Spirits, and cite the Air-Spirit Caffiel with these words:
CAP. LXI.
Caffiel's Citation.
I, N., cite you, spirit Caffiel, through Hot † Com † Caffielis, Aer, Spiritus, Nonscalatamirs. Come, Caffiel, per Cos Aer Spiritus levosont. † I, N., call you, spirit Caffiel, through Rolamicon † Hipite † Elohim † Reremisch † Jehova †. I, N., conjure you, spirit Caffiel, through Roreipse † Loisant et Dortam † Bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † ô Agla † o Jehova † prasa Deus † Monos † ipseytiam † Caffiel et Coelum, Wons, Aer. terem, peemta, Aer, Sola Caffielis, pors Cantanilenams. cata Coelum, Aer, Schaff Elohim † through Christ † Elohimny † Amen.
Caffiel's Binding.
Deus Rohom Tetragrammaton † bind † Caffielis, O Jesus †, you Light † of all light † hold fast † Sancta Spiritus † schische † knot † bind † with the band † O Christ † in L x L x L x E x name, amen.
This binding is spoken 3 times.
And when you have had enough of the storm, dismiss the Air-Spirit with these words:
Dismissal,
Ego N. ô Caffiel, ja jav, † o Caffiel † Degratias † Ruay † Deus † Jesus † et Filii † amen.
And send the Air-Spirits back to rest by the following words.
G. V. G. S.
Coämmaschelem † Noasile †
G. H. G.
Ucadaschiem †
So the storm is at an end, and the spirits too are at rest; but guard yourself well when you bind the spirit, that he does not harm you with fire. So much was my art.
If you would know something of making yourself proof, of turning bullets aside and the like, cite Barbiel. (See Plate 64.)
{Plate 64: 64 — Barbiel's Form. [A man with a moustache, in a brown coat and black stockings, who holds a herb with its root in his outstretched hand and with the other points to an empty square cloth (a handkerchief); at the top left and below, several large black and red characters, at the top left a red character like a 3, at the bottom left a red character like „HC“]}
CAP. LXII.
Treats of all kinds of charms of proof that Barbiel can procure.
If anyone means to stab, shoot or strike you, with pistols, carbine or lance, and only looks sourly at you, as though he meant to strike you, then say these words:
Ego dem Barbiel masa catis est. Jesus pru catiem Barbielis.
Then they must keep in their hand whatever they have, until you bid them lay it down. Nor can any of them go away from the spot.
Ite Paripach.
If you would bring it about that no musket-ball or grenade shall hit you, carry the following character in your handkerchief through the air before you; wherever you strike or point with your handkerchief, there the bullets turn away from you, to the place where they have been pointed. The words for the character run as follows:
Siepatis † Corpitem † Padietis † Bistolam † Jesus † Benedictam † pours Corpitem †
Plate 65 shows the character for the handkerchief.
Ite Paripach.
If you would make yourself truly proof, so that no man in the world can open you,5 go out early in the morning, in the hour of Mars, before sunrise, and say these words, as stands here:
Sol † Mohota † Dies hoc † Aglam † Sol † Sis † Tamissa † Wanna † Corpus † et uo †.
Then no man, nor devil in Hell, will open you within 24 hours. This too is to be noted: that you write these words on a paper, on a green turf, in the hour already named and also before sunrise, and carry them with you on your breast.
If you would see all kinds of fair summer-birds,6 cite the air-spirit Pedatiel. (See Plate 65.)
CAP. LXIII.
If you would gladly have all kinds of fair summer-birds presented to you, cite the Air-Spirit Pedatiel with these following words:
Pedatiel's Citation.
I, N., command you, spirit Pedatiel, through Catiss † Capis † Movis. † I, N., call you, spirit Pedatiel, through Rolamicon † Hipite † Agla † Elohim † Reremisch † Jehova. † I, N., conjure you, spirit Pedatiel, through Rore † ipse † Loisant † et Dartam † Bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † quiavit † it sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † o Jehova † Prasa Deus † Magii † et is Diabola † Milasont † Pedatielis, ipsa † Pedatielis, amen.
These words are not spoken without a circle; so, dear follower, guard yourself well. For when you have spoken these words, you will have before you all kinds of fair summer-birds, and with them a lovely song; and as soon as you call for them they are there at once, for the spirit Pedatiel is swift, but very cunning with it. And when you have seen your fill of the spirit's show and of the birds, dismiss them from you as follows:
G. V. G. S.
Himalesciy † o Nacoschiles †
G. H. S.
Aammadamlischiem. †
{Plate 65: 65. — Pedatiel's Form. [A boy in a red jacket and green breeches stretches out his arms toward birds; above, two bright-coloured birds (one with a long tail) and a flock of small birds; on the right a large red character (the character for the handkerchief) with small circles, with signs like 5 and 3 in it; below, a shrub]}
{Plate 66: 66. — Coachiel's Form. [A laboratory-worker in a red cap, a yellow jacket and an apron at a brick furnace with a fire-hole, on which stands a big-bellied distilling vessel; beside it a pair of tongs and coals]}
If you desire to know the transmutation of metals, or anything else special in alchemy, cite Coachiel; for laboratory-men who work in minerals may ask of him, and they can learn from him how to turn the baser metals into better. He also gives news of the Philosophers' Stone; from him art is to be learned. (See Plate 66.)
CAP. LXIV.
If you would have instruction in alchymy, cite Coachiel in the following manner:
Coachiel's Citation.
I, N., cite and call you, spirit Coachiel, through Comaschkün † Loaschky † Bodes † Jehova † Mercurii † Aschem † Venuaischca † Lonaschky † Metias † Voocommeum † Loschiiica † Mola † Mercurii † et Sola. I, N., call and conjure you, spirit Coachiel, through Rolamicon † Hipite † Agla † Elohym † Reremisch † Jehova. † I, N., cite and conjure you, spirit Coachiel, through Roreipse † Loisant et Dortam † Bolaymi † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † ô Adonay † ô Jehova † Prasa Deus † o Aglam † Meschea † Conschca † Meoschei † Deum † et Lemischca † Amy † Jemiii † Aschcalam † in Medasch † meas Schadas † Amy † Amenisch.
Note here:
Coradiel, Sumnidiel and Coachiel } have no characters, but are summoned with one citation, namely the general citation given above.
Now follow the Water-Spirits in their order.
The superior and chief of the Water-Spirits is called by name Hydriel. He appears quite gently, as a Melusine, and one can call him, together with his servants, for everything; and his character is laid before the circle.
His character is thus ·1·
His servants are called Mortaliel, Lameniel, Camiel, Brachiel, Arbiel, Pesariel, Samiel, Lusiel, Musuziel, Dusiriel, Chariel. They tell you what lies in the water and has sunk there, and bring it to you when you call them; you can cite them by day and by night. (See Plate 67.)
CAP. LXV.
Treats of Hydriel's Citation.
Cite him with the following citations.
Hydriel's Citation.
Hydriel, apron chamerote, satrus pean néarny, Chabelon, vearchas, belta, Nothelmy phameron, arsoy pedaryn onzel, Lamedo drubel areon veatly cabyn et noty malerós haytny pesary does, pen rasi medusan ilcohi person.
{Plate 67: 67. — Hÿdriel's Form. [A sea-woman (Melusine) with long black hair, a naked upper body and a green, scaly serpent's body ending in a fin, with clawed feet, among reeds and water-plants by the water; the picture set crosswise]}
When you have spoken these words, one of these 12 chiefs, together with two of his servants, will appear to you invisibly and make his presence known by signs; then make him visible with the following chief citation.
Chief Citation.
Hydriel omar penadon epyrma narsoy greol fabelrusin adiel pedrusy norevi melrays uremy pean larfoy naes chemerotyn.
As soon as you have spoken these words aloud, he will set himself visibly before your circle, and fulfil your will in every point.
Account of this Spirit.
This eminent spirit and prince dwells in the waters, as in fishponds, lakes, seas, marshes, wells, water-ditches and rivers. He has under his rule at least 100 princes, but 200 counts and very many servants. Their office and service is to reveal everything that is in the water and in the earth, by day as well as by night. And know that these are very kindly and willing spirits. But they do not appear in the shape in which you cite them, for they appear mostly in the form of a serpent, sometimes large, sometimes small. His head, as he appears, is like the head of a fair maiden with flowing hair, and he is very fair of face. But never does one of these spirits appear alone; each prince has with him at his appearing at least 2 counts and some 80 attendants. But so that you do not go astray in the operation, and know at least some names of the princes who appear, I have named to you before 12 names of Hydriel's princes, which may be enough; and they begin Mortaliel, Camniel, Camiel etc.;7 see further under Hydriel.
Dismissal.
If you would now dismiss the spirit again, read the chief citation above backwards 3 times, and when you have read it once, say each time with it
Ite Paripach.
Now follow the Earth-Spirits in their order.
The chief and prince of the Earth-Spirits is called Buriel. He never appears by day, but always at night, with great storm and terror. Therefore the exorcist should take good care when he conjures him. (See Plate 68.)
Buriel's Appearance and Citation.
Buriel appears every time with a dreadful din, in the form of a great serpent with a maiden's face, with great hissing and whistling. But when he is conjured with the chief citation, he takes on a human voice.
His character is thus, as it stands here π
{Plate 68: 68. — Buriel's Form. [A great green serpent with a woman's head and long black hair, from whose mouth a ray (the hissing) issues, with red fins, on a dark strip of earth; the picture set crosswise]}
His servants are called thus: Merosiel, Casbriel, Drusiel, Almadiel, Nedriel, Carniel, Cupriel, Bufiel, Drubriel, Sarniel, Futiel, Nastros. But these named are his princes, and not common servants.
If you would now summon him before you, you need observe no quarter of the world; only look down before you at the earth between your feet,8 and call him thus, as follows:
But beware of him, for he is a malicious spirit who shuns the light; he hates the other spirits and is hated by them too.
I. Buriel's Citations.
Buriel Mastfoyr chamerusyn, noel pean lonachym mardusan philarsy, pedatym estlis carmoy boy scharonti phroys fabelronti, mear Laphany vearchas, clareson, notiel, pador astotiel marsyno reneas, Capedon, thisinasion melto, lavair carpentor, thurneam camelrosyn.
Speak this citation secretly and not aloud, and look down before you at the earth between your feet as you do, and the spirits cited will appear; and be great-hearted and steadfast, for he appears invisibly.
II. Chief Conjuration for Visibility.
Buriel Theresoy chamerontis, hayt plassu, nadiel, Marso, neany, pean, sayt, fabelron, chaturmo, Melros ersoty caduberosyn.
As soon as you have spoken this conjuration he will show himself visibly, and will faithfully entrust the secret to you. Before the citations you may lay his character a step away in front of your feet; then he will bring forth out of the earth what you desire. You can send him to the prisoners, into all the underground caves and marshes of the earth; he also lets himself be used as a servant of whoredom, and for the most hidden secrets of love.
Under him stand the Pygmies.
Account of the Pygmies.9
The Pygmies are earth-spirits; they dwell in the earth and stand under the Grand Prince Marbuel as their highest commander; after him Prince Buriel has command, and after him King Urinaphton. They are peaceable spirits and do men no harm, but like to be about men. They are cited without a circle, and during the citation one looks only at the earth between one's legs.
Process for citing the Pygmies in the magical manner.
This is done in two ways, and it is a sure masterpiece, often tried, of great consideration, and certain and true besides.
First one must have a table or little table of walnut wood or of lime wood, with 2 little stools or little chairs of the very same wood, made with backs. The cover10 must be 2½ feet long; for it one must have a tablecloth and 2 napkins of unused linen, and they must be hemmed with brand-new thread, and that by a girl between 7 and 9 years old. One must further have for it:
- plates,
- spoons,
- knives,
- glass bottle,
- small wine-glasses,
- small dishes, } All may be either of potter's ware or of porcelain, and must be paid for without haggling, at the price asked.
Further, one must have for it a brand-new earthenware brazier, and a white hen or dove, and good sweet-smelling incense, which one may first consecrate. One must also have quite pure honey, good milk or cream, fresh unsalted butter and sugar, and also Spanish or other sweet wine, 2 freshly baked loaves without leaven, and 1 new glass of fresh, pure well-water.
When you have now procured and prepared everything so, take your table, chairs, tablecloth and everything mentioned before, and go up a hill where there are grass and trees and where good running water flows by. There set down your table, so that its head faces the east; lay your table, set your chairs, lay the plates, put the honey, milk and butter into the little dishes (the milk and the butter must be strewn with sugar), lay the spoons and knives too, and at the right hand lay a sheet of white paper, a new pen and a new little glass of blue ink; lay yet another sheet of paper beside it, and write your desire on it in blue ink. When everything is now prepared in the manner described, pour some wine into each wine-glass; then take your white hen or dove, cut or tear it into 4 pieces, and let its blood run into the kindled charcoal fire, which must stand under the table. As soon as the smoke of the blood rises into the air, speak thus: Come, come here, you noble princes of the Pygmies, to my meal, which I have prepared for you in honour of your King Urinaphton; eat and drink what I have set before you. Come here, come, and do not scorn my gifts, as dear as your King Urinaphton is to you.
And when you have said this, throw one part of the hen toward the east, another toward the west, the third toward the south, the fourth toward the north. Then take some of your incense, which is made of frankincense, benzoin and storax, and put it on the charcoal fire that must stand under the table, so that the smoke can draw round about the table; and when you see the smoke rise, speak the following conjuration with a believing and great mind. But first, before you conjure, break a morsel from each loaf and dip it into the three foods, eat it, and taste the wine too; then conjure in the following manner:
I conjure you by the eternal throne of God and by the holy name Adonay, noble princes of the Pygmies, Salvian, Antologan, that you come here to this table without any delay; and when you have eaten and drunk, I beg you, as dear as your King Urinaphton is to you, to instruct me truly and faithfully in everything I desire to know from you.
Repeat this conjuration and speak it three times. Then step back a good 3 to 6 paces from the table and wait with patience; and 2 little men will come, who sit down each on a chair, facing one another, and begin to eat of the dishes set before them, and drink of the wine too. Then they will read the note you wrote, on which your desire stands; and when they have read it, they will give you a sure answer, or write the answer for you on the other sheet of paper, that is, if they mean to grant your request the first time.
Indeed, if they wish you very well, they call you over and talk with you as one friend talks with another. When all this is now done and they rise, one says to them:
I thank you, you noble princes of the Pygmies, that you have not scorned my request, but at my entreaty have appeared at this my meal; I beseech you most highly to be so kind as to appear again soon and willingly from now on, every time I call you again. Go now back again to your place with the Lord, who be between me † and you †.
The best time for this convocation is the month of May and June; and it must take place in clear and still weather, early in the morning before sunrise, and in a quiet and peaceful place where one is hindered by no one; otherwise they do not willingly appear.
Whatever is left over of food and drink may be eaten without worry; but the fire or the coals from the brazier must be thrown into the water.
Note.
Here it is to be known that at the first operation they often do not do all that is asked of them; so one may repeat the operation a second and a third time, a few days apart. But at the second and third operation one may already invite them to one's lodging, sit with them at one's table, talk with them and ask about the things one wishes to learn from them. Indeed, they serve one like servants in one's own dwelling. They also often come to you uncalled, and bring you more than you ask. They will also reveal to you their own true names, and tell you the way and manner in which you can call them when you want them.
Observation.
But the chief things you have to observe at their convocation are the following points.
-
You must keep everything you deal and treat with them very secret and silent, which they too require of you.
-
They cannot bear any cursing, do not like to hear filthy jests, nor can they bear whoredom; they can bear your speaking of God and of his Word.
-
You must in general lead an honourable and quiet life, and not deceive, overreach or steal from anyone, which they cannot bear.
They are not evil spirits.
Now follows their form: how both their King Urinaphton and the princes of the Pygmies themselves appear. And after that follows yet another process, how they are to be cited after the manner of the Venetians, who through these spirits learn of all the secret mines in other lands, and are helped by them to win them. (See Plate 69.)
{Plate 69: 69. — The Form of Urinaphaton, the King of the Pygmies (Pigmeorum) [A bearded king with crown, sceptre, ermine collar, red mantle and grey robe, with outstretched hand; beside him two little men (Pygmies) in jacket and breeches, one of them pointing; round about, large red and black characters, below, among others, a black A-shaped sign and a red C-shaped sign with an arrow]}
Full process for citing the Pygmies after the manner of the Venetians.
Have a little square table made for you, in an earthy sign such as ♍ ♉ or ♑, of lime wood or oak, not quite an ell high; likewise 2 little chairs with rails, about half an ell high; 2 new plates; 2 new spoons, fine and not large, of fine silver or of lime wood; 2 little knives; 3 earthen or silver bowls or little dishes; a new earthen censer; a new tablecloth; 2 new little glasses, or other clean drinking-vessels: in sum, everything new, used by no one before the operation and not to be used after it, but kept for these things alone. They must also be paid for at purchase at the price asked, and nothing beaten down. Then choose for yourself a certain fair day, when it is very bright and the air is still, and that on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, in the hour of ☉, ♀ or ☿. And look out for a fair green hill, where you are free and safe and can see the 4 quarters of the world, and may be and remain alone, unhindered by other people and unspied upon.
Then set the little table with its head toward the sunrise, cover it with the cloth, lay on it the plates, knives and spoons, 2 freshly baked unleavened loaves and the 3 little dishes; and put pure virgin honey in one, in the second a fine fresh roll of butter well strewn with sugar, in the third good creamy fresh milk, also well strewn with sugar. In one drinking-vessel put a sweet Spanish or Hungarian wine, in the other pure fresh well-water; set the glass with the wine at the head, but the one with the water at the foot.
When everything is now ready, you must have a charcoal fire, which must stand under the little table, with glowing coals in it; then take a young black hen or dove, hold it over the charcoal fire and tear it into two pieces, so that the blood falls on the coals; and when the smoke of the blood rises, throw the two parts of the hen or pigeon, one toward the sunrise, the other toward the sunset, and call three times aloud: Venite, Venite Principes Pigmeorum!11 Then throw a good incense-powder made of frankincense, benzoin and storax on the charcoal fire, so that the smoke draws everywhere around the table, and then call again toward the sunrise: Come, come, you noble princes of the Pygmies, to this my meal, which I have prepared for you in the name and to the honour of your King Urinaphton; come, come, and do not scorn this my meal. And do that three times too. Then break a morsel from each loaf, dip it into the 3 foods, eat it, and drink a little wine from each little glass.
Then lay your request, written with blue ink on pure virgin parchment, on the little table; set blue ink beside it in a little glass and lay a new pen with it; then step aside from the table, and you will see 2 little men come, who will sit down at the table, eat and drink, and they will also read your request; and when they rise again and are about to go away, speak to them thus:
Have thanks, you noble princes of the Pygmies, that you have not scorned me, but have come to this my meal, which I have prepared for you in the name and to the honour of your King Urinaphton; go in peace, and be willing to appear to me again another time.
This time they will not speak, write or answer; but when you have summoned them a second time at this very place (for it must be done three times), they will call you over and speak with you, and promise to serve you too, and bring the sign, which then happens at the third summoning. When you now have it, you can call them wherever you will: if only you take the sign in your hand and lift it up, and call them by their names (which they will make known to you at the third appearance), they will appear to you very willingly. Indeed, at your table in your house, and wherever you are, they will appear to you; they will also become very familiar, and talk with you of all sorts of things as one man with another. They also bring you, if they perceive your blameless life, gold, silver and precious stones, but of their own accord, unasked, and much sooner than if you asked them for it; they reveal to you the nature, kind and property of many roots and herbs and of other things besides. At your request they bring all the game together for you, wherever you want it. But be warned not to withhold his honour from God, nor to give them anything, nor to pledge yourself to them. You must also take pains not to anger them or act against them; otherwise they grow weary and quite hostile to you. But if you love them as is fitting, they love you again from the heart. This too you must mark well: that you reveal their secrets, and what you deal with them, to no one, because they will not bear it and like to keep their affairs quiet and silent. Nor do they like to hear cursing or the Devil named, nor talk of other unseemly things. Herewith, then, you have the true way of these spirits (from whom one can have great profit, if one deals with them rightly and in the proper manner) to bring them into your service, together with the true-hearted warning to be without falsehood and guile in it, and to lead an honourable life.
End of the Processes for Citing the Pygmies.
CAP. LXVI.
Treats of the preparation of the Finding-Ball.
This high and glorious secret of the Finding-Ball is also called an angelic Elector.12
I, Faust, was once with a good friend who had a Finding-Ball; it looked like metal, and yet was no metal, for all 7 metals were in one metal. Then I, Faust, asked my Mephistophiles, and got for answer: all 7 metals, namely ☉. ☽. ♂. ☿. ♃. ♀. ♄., had been brought into one metal, and this matter was called Elector. I asked when it had to be made. He answered: on a Tuesday, in the night, at 12 o'clock; but if it could be made on Christmas Night at 12 o'clock, that would be better. And he told me how to make it, thus: You must buy a melting-crucible, and you must melt all the 7 metals; but take good care, dear Faust, when you mean to bind the Mercury, for God's grace stands by it, and therefore it is also called an angelic Elector, and a magical spirit too, before which no spirit of Hell can stand. But the words must stand on the ball as the figure shows, and it must hang on a green silk thread. (See Plate 70.)
{Plate 70: 70. — The Finding-Ball. [A fold-out plate set crosswise: a young man in a blue shirt and a green coat rolls a large disc of three concentric rings around an inner circle, divided into four fields by a cross; in the arms of the cross red little crosses (☩) and red signs, in the horizontal arm on the left red signs like „ʒ7W“, on the right like „ʒ ℵ“; in the rings all around, red pseudo-Hebrew letter-signs (some of them like ʒ, 7, W, C); along the top edge and to the left and right, large black and red characters of angled strokes, hooks and small circles]}
The Preparation of the Metals for the Finding-Ball, and its Casting.
If the metals set down here below are duly prepared as is described, and duly cast with their characters in the form of a ball, or in some other shape and form, it is called an Electrum Magicum or angelic Elector.
Preparation of the Metals.
Take 4 loth13 of gold refined and purified several times through antimony; melt it on a Sunday in the hour of the Sun, and when it flows well, add purified saltpetre to it little by little until it throws off sparks of all kinds of colours; then pour it into a new, unused ingot-mould and keep it. But take good care, NB., that you are finished within this hour of the Sun. After that, on the Monday, in the hour of the Moon, melt 5 loth of cupelled silver, purify it with purified sal ammoniac that has been freed of all common salt, and when the hour is past, stop likewise and keep it clean.
On the Tuesday, in the hour of Mars, melt 16 loth of pure, unspoiled iron with potash in which there is no common salt, and then purify it further with pitch and tar.
On the Wednesday, in the hour of Venus, melt 4 loth of copper and purify it with pitch.
On the Thursday, in the hour of Jupiter, melt 8 or 6 loth of tin, and purify it with the fat of a ram.
On the Friday, in the hour of Mercury, take 4 loth of pure virgin mercury, purify it diligently with vinegar and salt, then press it through a leather.
On the Saturday, in the hour of Saturn, melt 12 loth of new, unspoiled, pure lead, throw much pitch or tar on it so that it is well purified, then pour it out and keep it for use like the other metals.
Now, NB., watch for the time of the new moon, and in the hour when it kindles or enters, melt all your purified or previously prepared metals together, and that in the following order.
The Casting of the Electrum or Finding-Ball.
Now you must have ready the mould for the ball, which you must already have made beforehand, and make it warm. Then
Put the lead into the crucible first, then the tin; when these two are now about to flow, and before they become really hot, pour the mercury in and stir it together with a hazel rod, and Saturn and Jupiter will take the Mercury into themselves; then add the copper and give a strong fire; then the silver; lastly the iron and the gold. And when everything flows well, throw in 1 loth of your blood, let beforehand from the median vein and dried, and then pour it into your finished mould, well warmed beforehand. In this hour, now, when the new moon enters, you must be finished with everything, and not work beyond it.
Note.
The blood from your median vein that is thrown in must be prepared for it in the following manner.
Have the median vein opened in the month, day and hour in which you were born, and then dry the blood in the air, in the shade, so that no sun comes to it, for the sun draws the spiritus and the volatile part out of it.
Note. But if this time you cannot get it completely finished within this hour, so that you could cast it, then let it rest until the moon is new again in the following month, and then complete it.
Now follows
Yet another way of making the Finding-Ball.
Take pure, choice bismuth and fine tin, together with pure clay from ore, and form a ball from them on the day and in the hour of Mercury, with the following signs, which are engraved upon it in that very hour of ☿.14
☿ Ũ ⁚ ◊ ♁ [a sign like Ω] ☉ Z G
[a hexagram of two triangles]
[a sign like ♉ with a cross-stroke] [a sign like ρ] [a sign like ☌, a circle lying on its side with a stroke] W ♄
Mark: it must be made early in the day, on the day of ☿, in the very hour when the ☉ rises; and likewise, when one would search for anything with this ball or work with it, let it always be done in that hour. With this ball one can find all lodes of ore; one can make a plan with it, and need not even go onto the mine; but one must always go by the planetary hours, and you must hold the ball over it and ask what metal and ore is in this pit, and it will show you everything. With it one can also learn anything else one would like to know: if it is the truth, it turns about the ring; if not, it stands still. If one is seeking hidden treasures, the ball will swing toward the place where it lies, and when one comes to that very spot, it turns round in the ring.
Yet another way of making the Finding-Ball.
Take unused lead and cast it on a Tuesday between 11 and 12 o'clock, with a little ☿; put a little magnet in it as well; melt and cast it in the name Waram, Postam, Lequiel; make the following signs on it, hang it on a green silk thread, and conjure it with a rod. (See Plate 71.)
{Plate 71: Pl. 71. [Four bells, each with an eye in which stands a small c (a crescent moon), with red signs: 1) a scroll-sign in the shape of a heart or a point, with the letters J. b.; 2) a trefoil-like sign with a sign like ♓ and the letters I K.; 3) a shield-shaped sign with a double stroke; 4) the letters A M A one beneath another; beside them a rounded square with a red radiant sun] — Pl. 19.15 [Below, divided off by a line, a strip of large red and black characters of angled and crossed strokes, among them a red P, a black sign like ʒ and a black sign like ♆, or a trident with a circle]}
Yet another special way to make the Question- and Finding-Ball.
This work with the Question- and Finding-Ball is not a supernatural thing, as many simple people would have it because the art of making it is said to have sprung from the Egyptians, or from the ancient Ciscen16 who lived in the time of Ulysses; rather it is an astral, sidereal and heavenly thing,17 and is true and undeniable. It is true that one cannot properly know who devised and invented it; but all philosophers and sages say that it was brought to the light of day long before the birth of Christ, namely in the time of Alexander the Great, when one of Alexander's soldiers on the march into Persia opened an ancient tomb and is said to have found, together with a ring of invisibility, this Finding-Ball too, with the description of how it is made, under the inscription: Globus Philosophiae occultae.18 But this ball-work must be made through the 12 months of the whole year, and always in the hour when the full moon enters; among the ancients, however, it was made in the 12 open nights,19 each night of which stands for a month. And this ball is above all the knowledge of the whole world, because it reveals all secrets and whatever is hidden, and it is rightly called the Highly Praised Work.
The Making of the Ball.
In the room, or, if you can, in the open air, set a table so that you can walk round it; with your side-arm make a circle round it; lay down a few little pieces of unused lead on which these letters are engraved, S. M. C. C. S., that is: Semen mulieris conteret Caput Serpent.20
In the first open midnight hour go to the place described above, in the deepest silence; do not look round, whatever may mock you; cast a little ball of a metal, about the size of a bean, on which these two signs stand, ♈ ♄, and that through ☉ and ☽. Let nothing frighten you off, though the most wondrous strange things come before you; and when you are finished, take your ball, go away in silence, lay it under your head, and let nothing trouble you.
In the second open midnight hour go again to this place and cast a little ball of the same size with the following signs ♉ ♃. When it is finished, take it with you and lay it under your head.
In the third midnight hour present yourself again; cast a little ball with these ♊ ♂; when it is finished, take it with you and lay it under your head, as before.
In the fourth midnight hour go again to the place, facing the sunrise; cast a little ball of the same size with these signs ♋ ☉, and when you cast it, add a little gold to it. Herein be careful, for the Devil likes to hinder profitable works. Then take it, and lay it too under your head.
In the fifth open midnight hour present yourself again; cast a ball with these following signs ♌ ♀, and lay it too under your head, as you did before.
In the sixth midnight hour cast yourself a little ball with these signs ♍ ☿, and lay this one too under your head.
In the seventh open midnight hour cast another little ball, into which you must take a little silver, with these signs ♎ ☽, and lay this one now under your head too.
Here too act carefully, for much depends on it; mark that very well.
Now, NB., you have learned a great secret and climbed the highest step, which many have wished to see, and have neither seen nor learned it.
In the eighth open midnight hour now place yourself facing north, and melt these 7 balls and cast them into 5 equal little balls, and say to each one Poote, Cepheo, Pegaso, Perseo,21 and then conduct yourself as before.
In the ninth open midnight hour take these 5 little balls and melt them again into 3 equal little balls; when these are finished, sprinkle them crosswise with water (▽),22 and say Impurus puritate indiget,23 and then do as was done before.
In the tenth open midnight hour take the 3 little balls, melt them again, and cast one from them; then sprinkle it with your own blood and say with it: Impurus puritate indiget; then go away in silence, let nothing lead you astray, leave it lying on the table, and set everything on this, that you may only be finished, and before the bell strikes 12.
In the eleventh midnight hour engrave the 7 planets on it, and say to Saturn:
Ecce henato, heiromet, and to all the others say these following words:
Eugaristia est inest tu globul proston N. N. epaxatos.
When you engrave24 the 7 planets on it, stand facing the east.
In the twelfth open midnight hour take the ball before you again, stand facing the east as well, sprinkle it with water, and name these names: Eridano, Puteo, Orion, Neper.25 After this conjure the ball in your name, and say this following conjuration:
Conjuration.
Noble work, I, N. N., conjure you by Almighty God and by all created things, above the earth and beneath the earth, and by the firmament of heaven, and by the 4 elements △ ▽ ▽ △. I conjure you by the whole wide and broad circuit of this world, and by the 12 months of the year, by the annals, by all spirits above and below the earth, that they find no claim on you. I conjure you by all 4 seasons of the year, summer, autumn, winter and spring. I conjure you by your own given power, and by the 7 wonders of the whole world, that apart from my name N. N. you be null and void, yes, quite dead; but at the naming of my right name, that you be as a living, true work, and render due obedience according to my will and bidding. This is commanded you herewith by the power of God, and to the fear and terror of all hellish companies, of their delusions, the messengers they send out, their magical inventions, however they may be devised and thought up: in sum, to offer the utmost resistance to all that is adverse, to bring all hidden things to light, to destroy and drive away all fantasies and spectres down to the lowest Hell, to show me and hand over to me all metals, such as ☉ ☽ ♀ ♃ ♄ ♂ and the like, and also all pearls and precious stones that are hidden and unknown, or possessed and guarded by the Devil; to turn away all that is adverse from my flesh and blood, my goods and chattels, and by God's grace give it neither place nor room; in sum, at the naming of my name, to show all that is unknown by Yes and No, and to be bound to this for good as long as I have life.
Form of this ball. (See Plate 72.)
{Plate 72: 72. — Upper figure, outer ring: SERPENTARIO — BOOTE — CEPHO — ORIONE — CETO; in the inner field, on the arms of the cross: Volunto — Niper — Vultare — Pane; in the bands red signs, among them ♈ ♉ ♊ ♋ ♌ ♍ ☿ ♃ ☉ ♀ ♂ E ☽, several H, K, Z, 5, and signs like ♐ ♏ ♒ and ♓. — Lower figure, red signs in the outer ring (clockwise from the top): ♊ ♂ ♋ ♌ ♍ ♎ ♏ ♐ [a sign like 3, probably ♑] ♒ ♓ ☽ ☉ ♉ ♈, with stars (✱) between; in the inner ring: ♂ ☉ ♀ ☿ [a sign like ♄ or 5] [a sign like ♃ or Z] ☽. [Two discs: above, a celestial globe with a cross, two crossing bands (the zodiac and the planets) full of red signs, a sun with a face, a crescent moon and three red stars, surrounded by a ring with the names of the constellations; below, a round disc with a hatched outer rim, two rings of signs, and in the middle a red trefoil (triskele) of three loops]}
The Virtues of this Ball.
It makes manifest all hidden secrets when it is asked, and gives the sign Yes to the right hand and the answer No to the left, and that exactly, so that you can know all your enemies; for when you have spoken over it, as stands briefly above, you can use it for whatever you will.
It drives away all evil spirits, spectres and phantasms, so that nothing can stay in a place where this ball lies.
No one can blind you with jugglery, for you see everything that anyone does.
It suffers and tolerates no witchcraft, neither on you, nor on your house, nor on your cattle.
It reveals all goods secretly hidden in the earth, or wherever they are: take it in your hand, and at once it springs out of your hand toward where they lie. Bury it a span deep in the earth, let it lie 12 hours, then go to it, and all the spirits are gone, and you can obtain the treasure without trouble. Pour a little gold-bearing lodestone into it, and the gold must rise up. On this the Persians set great store, and it was kept very secret among them.
If a man cannot die, lay the ball under his head, and he will be released.
Bind the ball on the forehead of a possessed person, bind the cord of a christening-cloth over the ball and say: Spiritus discede maligne, in Nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti, and he will answer: discedentum est mihi;26 then open the windows and sprinkle the person from top to bottom with cold water in nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti, and you will see wonders.
Carry it with you, and no mishap will befall you by water or by land, but you will always be fortunate.
You will be fortunate in all your affairs, so that no one can deceive you; your eyes will be as if opened, and you will feel all things wondrously within you.
If something has been stolen from you, lay it on whatever the thief has touched, and it must come back within 12 hours, namely the stolen thing.
In sum, it serves for every good thing, even what is not yet and cannot be fathomed. Therefore let him to whom it is given by God thank God for his wondrous gifts, and praise him for them in eternity. Amen.
CAP. LXVII.
Treats of how one makes an earth-mirror, to see in it all the goods hidden in the earth.
I, Faust, asked my dear Mephistophiles whether one could not make or prepare a matter of steel, metal or glass, so that one could see the treasures in the earth, and also a man's sickness, from what it took its origin or what touched it, and anything else one desires to see in the world, in whatever way one will.
Mephistopheles answered:
Ah yes, dear Faust: on a Friday you must buy a new mirror in your own name, and pay for the mirror at the price they offer it to you, so that no spirit can find fault with it. Take it and bury it in a churchyard in the hour of Mars, in a man's grave, in your name, directly over the dead man's face, and let it lie there 9 Fridays. On the 9th Friday go there and take it out again in your name, and go with it to a crossroads, and lay it right in the middle of the crossroads in the names of the three spirits for which you would have it: as, if you wished to see all the treasures in the earth or in walls, then, dear Faust, you must have Ariel and Marbuel. These two will open to you all the foundations of the earth through their great nimbleness. After them also Aciel: he will show you the treasure, and drive off from it all the spirits that keep it, and show you how and in what way you are to get the treasure; he also shows you how much it is, whether it is gold, silver or precious stones, and how much it comes to in sum. Then let it lie 9 Fridays; on the ninth Friday go there and take it out again in your name, and ban the three spirits into the mirror with these words. But do not look into it, either before or after the banning.
The Banning.
I, N., ban you, spirit Ariel, you, spirit Aeiel,27 you, spirit Marbuel, into my mirror through Rore † ipse † loisant et Dortam † Bolaimy † Acom † Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † ô Jehova † prasa Deus †. I, N., conjure you, spirit Ariel, you, spirit Marbuel, you, spirit Aciel, through Rolamicon † Hipite † Agla † Elohim † Reremisch †. I, N., conjure you, spirit Ariel, you, spirit Marbuel, you, spirit Aciel, through Scham Schmachaday † Maaschmay † Ischalam † Ischaylam † that you three princes stay in this mirror and show me all hidden goods, be it silver, gold or precious stones. I, N., ban you, spirit Marbuel, you, spirit Aciel, upon my name in this mirror, through Adonay † Agla † Paaschilam † o Aglam † Ischailas † Cassrielis † o Jehova † Schailis † o Amisielis † o Sadalachia † o Arielis † o Cassrielis et Gabrielis † amenisch.
And when you have spoken these words, dear Faust, these 3 spirits and grand princes will at once go into the mirror and appear to you in it. But it is not yet right enough: see to it that you bring it onto an altar, so that the spirits are consecrated by an ordained person, so that they show you the truth. This mirror must lie there 3 Sundays. But take good care, dear Faust, that no consecration for the dead is spoken over it, or all your trouble is in vain and lost. With these words, dear Faust, the mirror is finished; but under the mirror you must lay this following character, as the figure here shows. (See Pl. 73, Fig. A.)28
When this mirror is now ready for use, you must first let a dog or a cat look into it, before you look into it.
CAP. LXVIII.
Treats of a Use of the Mirror made of Electrum.
First make a smoke of frankincense, mastic and Assa dulci,29 wash your face with rose-water, and be alone in a chamber where it is quiet, by day or by night as it pleases you, though it is better by night; and call these following names 3 times quite softly into the mirror; turn your face too toward the quarter of the world from which you desire to seek something, and you will have the appearance and be told everything in writing. When you have now been told what you desire, say: Spirits, go in God's peace, and be willing when I summon you henceforth. You must always begin summoning the names with the day on which you operate.
☉ Hamath.
☽ Harmon.
♂ Hamas.
♀ Sambhan.
☿ Barchan.
♄ Sadon.
♃ Semharis.
CAP. LXIX.
Treats of how one is to make a magic bell from the Electrum.
At the entry of the new ☽ make yourself a mould in the shape of a little bell, of loam30 and gypsum; keep it until the moon is right at its fullness, or becomes full; then melt the metals of those planets that have a conjunction or meeting on that day, whichever they may be; then take the metals and melt them with the other planet's metals, when they stand in the heavens at that time, and such influence will go into this body. Do this as often as the conjunctions occur, until all 7 metals are compact; and afterwards make the mould glowing hot, and cast the bell, and while casting speak these words: Judices Regni infernales conjuro vos per potentiam ac singulares, ut semper mortali obedientiam praestetis quod vobis per hoc mandabitur.31 Let the mould grow cold, and knock it apart, and fumigate the bell well with frankincense and amber; keep it in a white cloth, and guard it so that no one gets to see it; and you must also apply yourself to chastity, which is most necessary. When you now wish to use the little bell, go out under the open sky at about 9 to 11 o'clock on a Saturday, and write these characters in it as follows with your own blood; ring it toward all 4 quarters of the world, and your spirit will at once appear to you. (See Plate 73, Fig. B.)
And when you have brought the spirit to you, remember to give him command, with a short citation, what he is to bring you and do, and that in the following manner. The spirit that has served me most was called Floga, from the ☽, otherwise called Schaeter, Schaemoth, Schartagan; he brought me 3321 ducats several times.
Conjuration.
I conjure you, O kindly spirit, who have now appeared to me gently, that you tell me here what I will, and straightway, before even an hour passes, bring it hither, without any harm to human creatures and without uproar, in sound metal minted by human hands, Alamahaya Memene se hepopilamo o Perasacha Meneme se Hipople, and accomplish my will and command. Then the spirit will hasten away at once and bring everything from foreign lands; but use it for good, for otherwise everything melts away. And then dismiss him with the following words:
Dismissal.
I thank you, spirit N., for your willingness and your appearing; go back in peace whence you came; the peace of God be between me and you and all devout Christian souls; and when I call you by your name, be willing to appear to me again. Go in peace; God grant you and all of us at the last eternal blessedness, Amen.
You can also dismiss him in the following manner, speaking thus:
I, N., thank you, spirit N., for your faithfulness and the services you have rendered me. Go from me in peace in the name of the great Adonay, and appear to me willingly at all times when I require you, and I will honour you at all times and wish you all rest. Herewith depart from me in peace; praised be the name of the Lord for ever and ever, Hallelujah.
Note.
A certain N. N. had this; and with the writing above there still lie 8 ducats, which such a spirit had to fetch out of the sea, which he brought in half an hour and threw down on the table still quite wet, mixed with sea-salt, some 3321 ducats in all.
This experiment was tried once every week in the year 1670, and several times carried out with success. One can also undertake it in winter or at other times in one's room: make a circle on the table, write the known characters in it, and proceed with it according to the process. He does everything you ask of him, and it goes forward without any pact, so that one need have no scruple of conscience about it. The spirit who appeared to me was called Flor, in the form of a traveller dressed in a green garment; he always gave fitting answers, and did everything according to my desire before an hour had passed.
The name of the spirit I desire to have must be written inside the bell; then the spirit must obey, be he who he may. Indeed, the angels in heaven must be obedient. By this ringing one can also bring people to your house from many miles away.
CAP. LXX.
Treats of how one can make crystals of metal or glass.
I, Faust, asked my Mephistopheles whether crystals could not be made and prepared from metal or glass. My Mephist. answered:
Ah yes, dear Faust; set about it, and on a Tuesday go to a glassmaker or to a glassworks, and have a glass formed for you, dear Faust, right in the hour of Mars. You can have it prepared for you in two ways: one like a urine-glass, the other like a stone, according to the form and shape in which you want it. Pay for it at the price they offer it to you. Take that and bury it, as the account of the mirror teaches you; only this is to be observed: if a woman wishes to make a crystal, she must also bury it in a woman's grave. But, dear Faust, other spirits are needed for the crystal; yet with the crystal you cannot accomplish as much as with the mirror, in which you can see more. For the crystal you must have me, Mephistophiles, and also Azeruel and Adadiel. Through us three you can see a man's whole condition, in whatever way you wish to know it, dear Faust; also when something has been stolen from someone, also what ails a patient, also when someone has had something evil put into his house; all this we show you in the glass. There are also two characters belonging to the crystal, which are made and prepared as these following figures show, namely: (See Plate 74, Fig. A.)
The spirits must likewise be conjured into the crystal, as was done with the mirror at the crossroads, but this conjuration runs differently from that one; so speak in the following manner:
I, N., command you, spirit Mephistophiles, you, spirit Azeruel, you, spirit Adadiel, that you appear to me at once in my crystal upon my
{Plate 74: 74. — A — This character is laid underneath in the forenoon. — This character is laid underneath in the afternoon. — B — Azeruel's Form. [Above, two black characters of angled strokes with arrowheads or triangles at the ends, the right one with I-, Ω- and X-like members and a flourish; below, a horned, bearded devil with pointed ears in a green jacket and wide green breeches, with a tail and red clawed feet, who blows fire from his mouth and raises a claw, on a patch of turf]}
name, through Aschalam † ô Mephistophiles † O Christ, † o Adadiel † o Aschai † o Azeruel: appear, you princes.
NB. Whatever your aim is set on, that you must say with it; that is the art. (See Plate 74, Fig. B.)
Yet another way to prepare a crystal or mirror.
This way or manner of preparing the crystal or mirror, in which one can see everything, is as follows:
Buy a crystal glass and lay it in baptismal water with which a first-born boy has been baptized; let it lie in it 3 weeks; afterwards pour the water out on a churchyard and read the 6th chapter of the Revelation of St John as you do; afterwards read the following, as it were a conjuration:
Crystal stone, you are pure as a tender maiden; you stand beneath a door of heaven, so that nothing stays hidden from you; you stand beneath a cloud of heaven, so that nothing stays hidden before you, be it on fields or meadows, be it master or servant, be it mistress or maid; let that be said to you for penance in the name of God the Father † God the Son † and God the Holy Spirit †. Then look into it, and you need have no further fear.
An experiment with a steel mirror, or Divination by Mirror.
Have a steel mirror made for you, namely a round little plate like a mirror, and have it polished so that it becomes quite shining; and when this is done, you must have another steel mirror, or such a plate, of the size of the first mirror, but this must not be polished, so that you can and must lay it on the other side, the side you do not look into. Then have also a piece of wood with which to set the mirrors upon one another, or if you cannot have that, paper; and have a priest read the Gospel of John over it, but the priest must have kept from women for at least 3 days; and have the paper fumigated with frankincense and sprinkled with holy water. Then make round discs of it in the fashion and size of the said mirror, the polished one and the unpolished one too; and the little disc that is set on the polished mirror shall have these names in its threefold circuit:
In the first circuit write: Alpha et Omega, Adonay.32
On the second circuit write: Tetragrammaton, Sabaoth, Emmanuel.
On the third circuit write: Verbum caro factum est.
But the black circle or circuit shall have these same names, in one circuit, in reverse order, namely in the first:33
Verbum caro factum est.
In the second Tetragrammaton, Sabaoth Emmanuel, and in the third: Alpha et Omega, Adonay. And when this is done, a priest who has kept from women for at least 3 days must say the Masses written below, and he to whom the mirror belongs must always be present himself. The first Mass, of the Holy Trinity: at it there must always be 3 lighted candles burning, on each of which is written Deus, Pater, Filius and Spiritus Sanctus; at its end he shall speak the Gospel of John over the mirror, and when he comes to the words "The Word was made flesh", make a cross on both sides of the mirror, and thereupon say the following conjuration:
Conjuration.
O Almighty God, we pray you that you would bless † this mirror and also † make it clear, that it may be good for your servant N. to see all secrets and hidden things, namely the treasures and also all costly precious stones and other things which I shall wish and desire to see, to the honour of your name and of my neighbour, Amen.
After that 5 Masses shall be read,34 namely the 1st of the holy Virgin Mary, the 2nd of John the Baptist, and the 3rd of the holy Apostles; and he who has the mirror consecrated shall see to it that no one else looks into it, for it would become unclean; and when he wishes to look into this mirror, he shall wear clean clothes and be undefiled, and so by divine grace see in the mirror what he desires. And when he wishes to look into it, he shall first pray an Our Father, the Creed, and also Come, God Creator, Holy Spirit, etc., and say: I conjure you, mirror, by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that you make yourself clear, so that I may see this or that, in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. And when this is accomplished, you shall know that you will learn all your desire.
CAP. LXXI.
Treats of an experiment by which one can see in a glass everything one desires.
NB. This experiment must be made in a lonely place, where no striking of a bell nor even the crowing of a cock is heard.
On a Friday, when the moon is waxing, put on clean clothes, and see to it that you are clean otherwise too; then take a fair, clean, white glass, fill it with fair, clear water, and cover it with a new white linen cloth; set it on a marble stone; after that sigh out earnestly, with a devout heart, this following conjuration:
Conjuration.
Zoyma, Zoyplay, Pastorem. Coronem, Primonem, by God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I conjure you by the righteousness through which they brought the water out of the rock, by all that is above the heavens, and by that which is on earth and in the ground, and by all that is on and in the sea, and by the hellish things, and what is in Hell. I, N., conjure you by the goodness with which God created man in his own image, and by the justice through which he condemned you, and by the mercy with which he cleansed and redeemed the human race through Jesus Christ. I conjure you by the 12 Apostles of Christ and by their merits, and by the three Patriarchs, by all the Prophets, by their faith and prayer, by the 21 Elders, by their crowns, by the harps and fiddles, by the conquest and victory of Christ, by all adornment, and by the 144 Martyrs who sing a new song before God,35 that you come soon from all 4 quarters where you are, without any terror and cruelty, but in the form of a fair man, and go into this water and make it so clear and bright that I may see you.
When you now see him, close the glass with virgin wax as best you can.
Note.
Say this conjuration above 6 times, and if they still do not come, then speak this following prayer.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who gave the Apostles power to make all the sick whole, the dead alive, the lepers clean, and to cast out devils: be with me, and your divine power too, that I may compel the spirits whom I have named and wish to use, so that they do what I demand and desire; for all things are made through you, and you said to your disciples: Ask, and you shall receive. Now, Lord, I cry to you, I knock, and I beseech you, Lord, who have promised us that what we desire in your name you will give us. Therefore let these spirits come soon, so that I may compel them to do what I desire of them. I conjure you, Zoyma, Zoyplay, Pastorem, Coronem, Primonem, by the Annunciation of our Lord Jesus Christ, by his birth, by his fasting, by all his virtues, by his strength, by his might with which he raised the dead and made the sick whole, by his suffering and scourging, by the crown of thorns that he wore on his head, and by his nails that were driven through his hands and feet, and by the vinegar that he drank on the cross, and by the water and blood that flowed from his side, and by his innocence when the manhood called upon the Godhead, by his ascension into heaven, by the sending of the Holy Spirit, by the rending of the Temple, by the darkness of the sun, by the power at which the earth trembled, by the napkin that he wore on his head, by the power of the Holy Spirit. I conjure you by all the names of God our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the unspeakable one which no one may name, that you set out with all speed and appear to me in this water, so that I may see you without any sacrifice and in the form of a fair face, by the bond of the judgement of God. Amen.
Note.
If he does not come the first, second, third or fourth time, repeat the prayer for a whole hour; then he will appear to you in the form of a fair man or woman, and will truly show you and answer you about all that you ask. Item, you may command and bid him to fetch you something, men and women too, or whatever else you desire; that he does without doubt. And if you wish to travel from one land to another, he carries you there, and brings you back again into your house without harm or danger to your body and soul.
Afterwards give him leave in this way.
Zoyma, Zoyplay, Pastorem, Coronem, Primonem, go and depart, without any hurt to my body and soul, to the place that God has appointed for you; withdraw in peace, and hurt or burn or harm no one, either in body or in soul, in whatever way it may be; and be ready to come to me again when I call you. Go in the peace of Christ; the peace of Christ be with me and you, in the name of God the Father, † God the Son † and God the Holy Spirit † amen, amen, amen.
CAP. LXXII.
Treats of the 9 airy spirits: how one can deal with them in a glass of water and bring them to appear.
The names of these 9 airy spirits are thus: Nector, Goeme, Monto, Cassesi, Hassica, Mentanta, Husro, Fos, Fahassur.
Now deal with them in the following manner:
Take a clean crystal glass with clean running spring-water, which a chaste and pure person has fetched and poured into it, and pour some sweet-smelling water in with it. Do this at whatever time, day and hour you will (but on no Saturday or Sunday), only in clear, fair and still weather, and when the moon is in an airy sign and waxing, for that is better. Proceed thus: write their names in gold or yellow colour, or better, with the blood of a black hen or of a lamb, on a virgin parchment, which must lie crosswise; but see to it that the place where you wish to have the vision is clean and pure and well fumigated too. If you and the companion who is with you can make sweet music, do not leave it undone, for they appear all the more gladly. Set yourself and the glass toward the Orient, anoint your hands and your face too with rose-water, hold the glass with the water to your mouth, turn round toward the Orient, speak the names above 3 times aloud into the glass, set it down again, and then do not turn your eye away from the glass; and they will appear,36 first the 8 one after another; at last command them to fetch their king as well, in all the form and shape in which he was created by God Almighty in his element. And they will fetch him; and when they are all together with the king, receive them with these words:
Lord King, may Your Royal Majesty be welcome to me in God's name, together with your dear servants who belong to you; then go on to say:
Lord King, it is my desire that you have the royal throne fetched, and also the golden book of Solomon the Most Wise; that you sit down on the throne,37 take up the book, lay your right hand on it, and swear me an oath to show me with truth everything I shall ask you; you shall not be kept beyond your due time of the appointed hour.
When you have now seen that he has sworn, raising his hand into the book, then ask what you had in mind to ask, and he will write everything out for you quite clearly in good, intelligible letters. He presents to you the person you desire to see, and other secrets besides. When you have kept him long enough, and he has dispatched your question, then say the following to him: Lord King, for the goodwill you have shown and proved, and for your ample report, I thank you kindly. If it pleases you and you desire to hold your offering and royal meal, then give a sign. If he now gives the sign or writes the word yes, then say: Lord King, be pleased to send some of your servants, and to have fetched for you from the kitchen, larder and cellar of the King in N. N. whatever you please of food and drink, and to show yourselves merry, joyful and of good cheer at it; and I and my companion will make sweet music for you to it. If this now happens (as they gladly have it, if they have the time for it), which he will already indicate to you, and when he rises after the meal is taken, then say to him: Lord King, since Your Royal Majesty has appeared so willingly at my desire, and has answered my question so fully and granted me sufficient report, I therefore thank you kindly and most highly; go hence again, then, for this time, in the name of peace, and be willing and ready to obey me and appear to me another time at my further desire. The peace of God be between me and you, now and at all times, amen, Amen. Then he will gradually vanish from the glass. Then take the glass with water, pour it out in a clean place, and keep the glass nice and clean. In such a way you may summon them in a pure crystal or mirror, and in the same way in the hand too, as follows here:
Making Appearances in the Hand.
Take a fair clean oil and soot from the kitchen, smear the inside of the hand with it, take a wax candle in your hand, otherwise you can see nothing; and the darker the place, the better it is; then you will have appearances. But if you would make it in a boy's hand, you must say the names of the spirits three times into his right ear, but for yourself you must say them into the hand; the names must also be written on virgin parchment and bound round the arm and the pulse, and they are called Gardiab, Fardiar, Ipodhar.
Yet another way to have appearances in the crystal.
Turn your face toward the east, and with olive oil make a cross on the crystal, and under the cross write the words: Sancta Helena. Then a pure, chaste, innocent boy, begotten in a pure marriage bed and about 10 to 11 years old, must take the crystal in his right hand. Behind his back you must kneel down and pray the following prayer three times with great devotion and reverence:
I pray you, Lady, holy Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, who found again the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: by your holy devotion and your finding of the Cross, and by the holy Cross, for the sake of the joy you had when you found the holy Cross, and by the love you had toward your son Constantine, and by all the good that you enjoy for ever, that you show me in this crystal what I ask and would gladly know, Amen. And when the boy sees the angel in the crystal, you may ask him what you wish to know, and the angel will answer you. But you must undertake this operation just when the sun has risen, and the sky already shines clear and bright.
Yet another way by which one can learn and see a thief who has stolen something.
Take a very clean glass bowl that has something of a neck, fill it with consecrated water, then set it on a bench on which you have first spread a blessed cloth (linteum expiatum); on this cloth set the glass, and light 3 consecrated wax candles, and then lay two olive leaves crosswise over the mouth of the glass. Then pray the Our Father and the Angelic Salutation 3 times on bended knees, and those who are present must do so too; and when it has been prayed once, they must make a cross over the mouth of the bowl with the nail of the right thumb; but all must stand in the dark. Then pray this prayer: Holy angel, pure shining angel, by your holiness and my chastity show me the thief; and this you must say quite softly over the mouth of the bowl. Then one will see the whole man, with his clothes, rising and falling in the neck of the glass like a shadow or a mote in the sunbeam, and know him exactly. And this whole work can be seen for 3 hours.

{Tafel 68: 68. — Buriels Gestallt. [Eine große grüne Schlange mit Frauenkopf und langem schwarzem Haar, aus deren Mund ein Strahl (Zischen) dringt, mit roten Flossen, auf einem dunklen Erdstreifen; Bild quer gestellt]}
I. Buriels Citationes.
Buriel Mastfoyr chamerusyn, noel pean lonachym mardusan philarsy, pedatym estlis carmoy boy scharonti phroys fabelronti, mear Laphany vearchas, clareson, notiel, pador astotiel marsyno reneas, Capedon, thisinasion melto, lavair carpentor, thurneam camelrosyn.
II. Haupt-Conjuration zur Sichtbarkeit.
Buriel Theresoy chamerontis, hayt plassu, nadiel, Marso, neany, pean, sayt, fabelron, chaturmo, Melros ersoty caduberosyn.
-
Must du alles, was du mit ihnen handelst und tractirest, sehr geheim und verschwiegen halten, welches sie auch von dir verlangen.
-
(Siehe Tafel 69.)
{Tafel 69: 69. — Die Gestalt Urinaphatons des Königs der Pigmeorum [Ein bärtiger König mit Krone, Zepter, Hermelinkragen, rotem Mantel und grauem Gewand, mit ausgestreckter Hand; neben ihm zwei kleine Männlein (Pigmaei) in Jacke und Hose, eines zeigend; ringsum große rote und schwarze Charaktere, unten u. a. ein schwarzes A-förmiges Zeichen und ein rotes C-förmiges Zeichen mit Pfeil]}
(Siehe Tafel 70.)
{Tafel 70: 70. — Die Fünde Kugel. [Ausfaltbare Quertafel: ein junger Mann in blauem Hemd und grünem Rock rollt eine große Scheibe aus drei konzentrischen Ringen um einen Innenkreis, durch ein Kreuz in vier Felder geteilt; in den Kreuzarmen rote Kreuzchen (☩) und rote Zeichen, im waagrechten Arm links rote Zeichen ähnlich „ʒ7W“, rechts ähnlich „ʒ ℵ“; in den Ringen ringsum rote pseudo-hebräische Buchstabenzeichen (u. a. ähnlich ʒ, 7, W, C); am oberen Rand und links und rechts große schwarze und rote Charaktere aus Winkelstrichen, Häkchen und kleinen Kreisen]}
(Siehe Tafel 71.)
{Tafel 71: Taf: 71. [Vier Glocken mit je einem Öhr, in dem ein kleines c (Mondsichel) steht, mit roten Zeichen: 1) ein Rankenzeichen in Herz- bzw. Spitzform mit den Buchstaben J. b.; 2) ein kleeblattartiges Zeichen mit ♓-ähnlichem Zeichen und den Buchstaben I K.; 3) ein schildförmiges Zeichen mit Doppelstrich; 4) die Buchstaben A M A untereinander; daneben ein abgerundetes Viereck mit einer roten strahlenden Sonne] — Taf: 19. [Darunter, durch eine Linie getrennt, ein Streifen mit großen roten und schwarzen Charakteren aus Winkel- und Kreuzstrichen, darin ein rotes P, ein schwarzes Zeichen ähnlich ʒ und ein schwarzes Zeichen ähnlich ♆ bzw. Dreizack mit Kreis]}
Eugaristia est inest tu globul proston N. N. epaxatos.
Wenn du die 7. Planeten darauf stehst, so stelle dich gegen Morgen.
(Siehe Tafel 72..)
{Tafel 72: 72.
Bannung.
Ich N. banne dich Geist Ariel, dich Geist Aeiel, dich Geist Marbuel in meinen Spiegel durch Rore † ipse † loisant et Dortam † Bolaimy † Acom
† Coelum † Quiavitit † Sammas † Restascia † o Adonay † ô Jehova † prasa Deus †.
(Siehe Taf. 73 Fig. A.)

Du kannst ihn auch folgender Gestalt abdancken, also sprechend:

NB. Auf was da nun dein Absehen gerichtet hast, das must du darzu sagen, das ist die Kunst. (Siehe Tafel 74 Fig. B.)
