The Secret of the Jesuits

"Lord, deliver your servant from this present sorrow and poverty."
— the sixth conjuration of the Geheimnus der Jesuitern

The Geheimnus der Jesuitern, "the Secret of the Jesuits", is a short German treasure book that calls itself "the First Book of the Jesuits" and names as its compiler a Father Erhardus, priest of the Society of Jesus and professor of catechetics at Ingolstadt in Bavaria. It promises a sum of money in gold, fetched out of the earth or out of the sea by a single spirit, Terophi, and its machinery is Catholic through and through: Masses said for the operator's intention, confession and Communion, a blessed candle, three circles bound in the name of the Trinity, and a blessed palm branch to mark the spot where the spirit is to lay the money down. Father Erhardus swears by his priesthood that the book works, but only for grave need, and only if the gain is shared with the poor and the souls in Purgatory; an unlearned man must take a student with him.

The heart of the book is a chain of thirteen conjurations. Each one piles up the names, wonders and sacraments of the faith, from the creation by the word Fiat to the valley of Jehoshaphat, before demanding the same thing: the spirit is to come quietly, in the fair shape of a man, and bring "money that profits neither God nor man", that is, treasure that belongs to no one. Before and among the conjurations stand two psalms in the Latin numbering, versicles and responses, and a collect; after them come a prayer for when the spirit is heard or seen, the request, the dismissal, and the opening of the circles.

Johann Scheible of Stuttgart reprinted it in 1851 as no. XIII of the fourteen magical works gathered in Doctor Faust's Bücherschatz, where the table of contents calls it Geheimnisse der Jesuiten. The same collection holds two other books under the Jesuits' name, the Verus Jesuitarum Libellus and a Wahrhafter Jesuiten-Höllenzwang. Although this one calls itself a first book, no second book of the Jesuits follows it there: the next item, no. XIV, is Faust's Geister und Höllenzwang.

Translation

XIII. The Secret of the Jesuits. How to compel the spirits, or the devils.

The First Book of the Jesuits: the chief compulsion of all spirits that are in the air, in water, or between and beneath the earth, by which they are compelled to appear in an instant and to do a man's will, provided only that it is the Lord's will, is joined with godly things, and does no harm to one's neighbour.

This little book was gathered together into a small work by the Reverend Father Erhardus, priest of the Society of Jesus at Ingolstadt in Bavaria.

I, Father Erhardus, at this time at Ingolstadt chateseos professor ordinary Publicy,1 adjure each and every one, of whatever estate and dignity they may be, into whose hands this book shall come and who means to use it: by the eternity from which the most holy Trinity proceeds; and by the bread and wine which I daily, in my unworthy sacrifice of the Mass, and all priests likewise until the end of the world, change into the true Body of Jesus Christ, for the salvation and help of their souls; by the power of the priest, through which they ordain men to the priestly office; yes, even by the power of the Vicar of Jesus Christ, the highest Head of our most holy Mother the Church, who now reigns and shall rule hereafter.

But let no one dare to use this book without grave cause, inward tribulations, or some other cause of present poverty or other want, lest he harm the salvation of his soul, as has already befallen many; but only so that he may raise up and free himself or his neighbour from crushing need or affliction. For I, Father Erhardus, glory before God almighty, and confess before the most holy Virgin Mary, the ever chaste and most pure Mother, and before the heavenly hosts, that I desire to do nothing, to think nothing, to speak nothing, to write nothing or bring nothing about, that would do any evil against God, against my neighbour, against the salvation of souls, against my superiors, against the Pope, the head of the Roman Church, nor any less against our Mother the Church. For God almighty created me and all men to attain salvation, and formed me and all men to worship him. God, I say, was my witness in this little work, which I have left behind, with the knowledge of my superior, the head of the College, and also with the knowledge of the Provincial General of the Society of Jesus, who found it good and confirmed it; and the Roman Congregation, with the whole Church, has also judged this work to be complete and has graced it with privileges, so that the world after us may have it for help in great need: if ever a monastery should be laid waste by various misfortunes, that they might restore it to its former state; or if it were in some other necessity; or so that they might procure a great treasure for some other poor man. For this reason I have left it as an eternal memorial and for the great profit of those who come after, confirmed it with privileges and brought it to print. And I promise surely, by and upon my priestly dignity, that those who use this book shall obtain what they desire, if they observe the following:

  1. The man must be pure in his conscience from all sin.

  2. He shall have five holy Masses read for his intention, to the honour and memory of the most holy Trinity; but if he has not the means to pay for them, he must attend five holy Masses with this book.

  3. He must have a blessed candle.

  4. It must always be done on a Tuesday or a Saturday, by day, or by night between eleven and twelve o'clock, in a room or under the open sky, and always on the third day before the new moon or on the new moon itself. I promise surely that no harm will come to anyone, if he is not at all fearful and keeps what is written here.

  5. One must stand or kneel facing the sunrise, at home or under the open sky.

  6. If someone has mislaid a treasure and knows where it is, let him lay the book on the ground where the treasure lies, throw three handfuls of earth onto the book, and leave it for twenty-four hours. Then let him take it out again, and afterwards have three holy Masses read for his intention; or, if he has not the means to pay, let him attend three holy Masses with the book. When this is done, let him cite at the prescribed hour, and he will receive that treasure either beside him or at any other place where he wants it. But if someone does not know where a treasure lies, let him observe what is written and do it, and he will surely receive it. For the truth of this I swear by my priestly dignity that everyone will receive what he desires. If this book should come into the hands of an unlearned and common man who wants to use it, let him take as his companion a sensible student, or some other learned man who is truly sensible and well experienced in these matters; for otherwise he will obtain nothing. It is also needful that he share with his neighbours and help other poor and needy people, and no less the poor souls in Purgatory. But if someone should not obtain it at once, let him search himself whether he still has some sin upon him that he has not confessed; and so let him confess again anew, take Communion, and cite, and he will surely and happily obtain it. And when you go to confession, give alms according to your means, and tell the poor to pray devoutly for your intention. If this is done without sin, and the gain is not spent on a wicked and evil life, he will surely obtain it. In compelling and conjuring the spirits, this must be added: name the sum of money here, and from where the spirit is to bring it, without tumult, illusion, terror, deceit, and without interruption of this work. And the place where the spirit is to lay the money down must be marked with a blessed palm branch, so that he cannot do you harm. Then go into the circle, and first say the Prayer of Confession.

The circles are made in the following way.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen. Jesus † Mary † Joseph †. The first circle that I make, I make by the power of the most high Father, by his divine power, by the power of the creation of the world, which binds the first circle for me.

Jesus † of Nazareth † King of the Jews †: may this triumphal title guard, keep, protect and shield us from all evil of body and soul.

The second circle that I make, I make by the power of God the Son, who died for me and for the whole world on the trunk of the holy Cross; by his soul and innocent suffering, death and redemption of the world may he bind for me the second circle.

Jesus † of Nazareth † King of the Jews †: may this triumphal title guard, keep, protect and shield us from all evil of body and soul.

The third circle that I make, I make by God the Holy Ghost, by his divine might and his fire-flaming and burning love, which binds for us the third circle.

Jesus † of Nazareth † King of the Jews †: may this triumphal title guard, keep, protect and shield us from all evil of body and soul. To this may the most holy Trinity, God the Father † God the Son † God the Holy Ghost †, help me and all three circles, that they may be bound for us by these most holy words, through the invincible mercy. Amen.

Make the sign of the † and pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, one Creed.2

The Intention to Be Made Before the Prayer

I, N. N., a wretched creature and the greatest sinner in the world, offer up to you from the inmost ground of my heart, O most holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, this short little prayer; and I pray you also to give me the power to obtain what I intend and strive after, and to relieve my poverty, and in part also to bring help and relief to the needy and to the poor souls in Purgatory, through which the most blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints of God who rejoice in Heaven may be praised and honoured. Amen.

In the name of God the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Prayer of Confession

I, N. N., a wretched and sinful man, confess to God almighty, to his most blessed Mother and Virgin Mary, to all the dear saints, and to the Roman Catholic Church, that I have sinned much from my youth until this time, in thought, word and deed; and all these my sins, committed knowingly and unknowingly, I confess to God almighty, and I repent of all these my sins from the inmost ground of my heart, that I have offended the true, kind and merciful God with such great sins; and I pray you, O God, from a most humble heart, for the pardon of all my sins, since against you alone have I sinned and done evil before you. Only, O Lord God, do not count my sins according to my misdeeds, which are so great that they rise on high like clouds of mist. Lord, do not enter into judgement with your servant; for if you go to judgement with your servant, how shall I, a sinner, stand before you? O Lord my God, be gracious and merciful to me, a sinner. Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me, a poor sinful man, by your infinite grace and immeasurable mercy. I firmly resolve and firmly purpose from now on to lead a better life, to avoid every occasion, to keep your most holy commandments and to obey your most holy Majesty. I purpose never again to offend you, neither in thought, word nor deed. Ah, would to God that I had never offended you! Therefore I pray you, O God, beginning of all things, of all Godhead: look upon me, and regard me, a poor sinner, with your eyes of infinite divine mercy; and look upon the poisoned serpents of my great affliction and poverty. Fulfil your majestic being and the power of your divine word: your divine promise I call upon in the time of need, I will deliver you out of it, and you shall sing a new song of praise to the Lord. Now, O Lord God of Sabaoth, who know, search and pass through the inmost of hearts and the reins of men, you know into what tribulation and poverty I am set, with my companions and some of my blood relations. I go about sorrowful and bowed down all day long. At night, when I wake, I think of my state of misery and poverty. I and my companions and some of my blood relations eat our bread in ashes. But, Lord, you have promised through your truthful prophet and servant Jeremiah: I will put the words into the mouth of many: in my name they shall cast out devils, and every spirit shall stand under their power, so that you may know that I am the Lord your God.3 Therefore I will call and conjure those spirits that hold the temporal goods in their keeping, by your most high and most holy name, and by the promise of the word of God that is written in this book. Give me, O Lord, your divine protection, grace and power to compel them, so that they fulfil my request; then we shall rejoice in the Lord and praise you through your most holy name for ever. Fiat † let it be done, Fiat † Fiat †.

The 69th Psalm4

O God, attend to my help; Lord, make haste to help me. Let them be put to shame and confounded who seek after my soul; let them be turned back and put to shame who wish me evil. Let them be put to flight at once and be ashamed who say to me, Aha, at him! But let all who seek you exult and rejoice in you, and let those who love your salvation say always, Highly praised be the Lord. But I am miserable and poor. O God, help me, for you are my helper and my redeemer. O Lord, do not delay.

V. Be to us, Lord, a strong tower.

R. Against our enemies.

V. Let the enemy have no power against us.

R. And let the child of wickedness not harm us.

V. Lord, deal not with us according to our sins.

R. And repay us not according to our misdeeds.

V. Make your servants worthy of salvation.

R. Who hope in you, my God.

V. Send us help from your saints.

R. And from Zion shield us.

The First Conjuration

Hear, Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., call, conjure and compel you by the eternity from which almighty God proceeds; by the almighty power of God which he holds over Heaven and earth and Hell; by the unspeakable and infinite mystery of the most holy Trinity; by the word Fiat, "let it be done", by which all things were created; and by that soul which God breathed into the first man, Adam; by his freedom and power, which God imparted to our first parents in Paradise; by the displeasure and wrath of God which God had at the sin of our first parents. I conjure you by that wrath of God by which God drove our first parents out of Paradise through his archangel Michael. I conjure you by that wrath which God had, by which he gave up all of you hellish spirits, the proud Lucifer with the host of his servants, to be hurled down into the deep by his archangel Michael. I conjure you by the glory and obedience which everything in Heaven and on earth and under the earth owes to God almighty to praise him: that you appear before me at this moment in silence, without fear, without terror, and without any harm to my body and soul, and to my companions also without injury, without harm to this place or building, its crops and other things, in the fair human form of a man, humble and peaceable, and bring me

in good, true and just gold, without delay, without sorcery, deceit, falsehood or trickery, out of the earth or out of the sea; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current everywhere in this kingdom. And this I command you, you spirit Terophi, by the almighty power of God † who created the whole world out of nothing; by the strength of God the Son † who redeemed me and the whole human race with his precious blood; by the grace of the Holy Ghost † who fulfilled the whole law, and sanctified me and all Christians in the well of baptism.

2.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the servant of God N. N., call, conjure and compel you by the inmost Godhead, power and immeasurable majesty of the most holy Trinity; by the sacrifice, prayer and shed blood of innocent Abel; by the goodness, the humility kept, and the obedience of Noah, Jacob and Tobias; by the curse and damnation with which God cursed Cain the brother-murderer; by the invocation of the Messiah, when the people in the camp heard him; by Moses, when Moses obeyed the Messiah. By that obedience of Moses I conjure you, that you appear before me at this moment, in silence, without fear and terror, and without any harm to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm or injury to this place or building, its crops and other things, in the fair human form and clothing of a man, humble and peaceable, and bring me a sum of money

pr.6 (here ask as much as you like!)

in good currency and proper gold, without delay, without sorcery, without deceit, trickery or falsehood, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current in this whole kingdom. This I command you by the almighty power of God the Father † who created me and the whole world out of nothing; of God the Son † who redeemed me and the whole human race with his most precious blood; by the grace of the Holy Ghost † who sanctified me and all Christians in baptism.

3.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., cite, conjure and call you by the twelve tribes; by the blessing of Abraham; by the wrath of God against the people of Israel when they worshipped the golden calf; by the goodness that Moses showed Israel; by the love toward Israel; by the obedience of Abraham; by the angel who came from Heaven; by the might of King David. I conjure, call and compel you by all that by which Cornelius Agrippa, Cyprian and Solomon conjured the spirits.7 I call, compel and conjure you, Terophi, by all that by which you desire, and are able, to be compelled and conjured. By all this I compel, conjure and call you, you spirit Terophi: that you appear before me at this moment, in silence, without terror and illusion, without interruption of this work, without harm to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm or injury to this place or building, its crops or other things, in the fair human form and clothing of a man, humble and peaceable, and bring me pr. in good, true and proper gold, without delay, falsehood or trickery, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current in this kingdom. And this I command you by God the Father † by God the Son † and by God the Holy Ghost †.

4.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., call, cite, compel and conjure you by the binding oath of King David, by which David bound himself to almighty God; by the vow8 which Jacob swore to the one God; by his words, by the power of which the wrath of God was turned away from David; by those words through which David obtained mercy from God: I cried to the Lord in my tribulation, and he heard me (Psalm 119); I lifted up my eyes to the hills, from whence my help shall come (Psalm 120); my help comes from the Lord who made Heaven and earth. The Lord keep your going in and your going out. Behold, he that keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord keep you from all evil; he keep your soul. The Lord keep your going in and your going out, from now on and for ever.9 By these words I compel you, Terophi, that at this moment, in silence, without terror, without fear, without illusion, without interruption of this work, without harm to this place or building, without any harm, terror or injury to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm or injury to this place, its crops and other things, you appear before me in the fair human form and clothing of a man, humble and peaceable, and bring me a sum of money pr. in good, true and proper gold, without sorcery, without delay, deceit, falsehood or trickery, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true money, current everywhere in this kingdom. This I lay upon you in the name of God the Father † and of the Son † and of the Holy Ghost † Amen. † † †.

5.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., call, compel, conjure and cite you by the mightiest word Fiat, by which Heaven and earth were created; by that Word which was made flesh and dwelt among us; by that subjection and that obedience to which you are subject and which you must obey; by the wrath of God with which he punished all sinners with the Flood; by that sign of peace which Noah received in the air; by that oath of God almighty by which he bound himself never again to punish so; by providence and divine co-working; by the love and infinite mercy of God. I call, compel and conjure you, Terophi, that you appear to me at this moment, in silence, without fear, illusion or interruption of this work, without harm to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm or injury to this place, its crops and other things, in the fair human form of a man, and bring me N. in good, true and proper gold, without delay, sorcery, illusion, falsehood or trickery, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current everywhere in this kingdom. This I command you to do, Terophi, by the almighty power, the immensity and the majesty of God the Father †; by the justice, wisdom, suffering and death of God the Son † Jesus Christ; by the sanctifying grace and the good gifts of the Holy Ghost † † †.

6.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., call, compel and conjure you by the full power and almighty power of the living, true and just God; by that mystery chisterum10 and the counsels of the most holy Trinity, how the human race was to be redeemed. By all this I conjure you, with which Cornelius Agrippa, chanalses,11 Solomon and Cyprian conjured the spirits once and for all; and by that by which you will and can be conjured, compelled and called: that you appear to me in the form desired and bring me the sum asked for, without harm to my body and soul and to my companions, without injury to the least thing. Lord, deliver your servant from this present sorrow and poverty, as you delivered Enoch and Elijah from the common death of the world † Deliver me, O Lord, your servant, from this poverty, as you delivered Daniel from the lions' den † Deliver me, O Lord, your servant, as you delivered the three youths from the burning furnace and from the hand of the wicked king † Deliver me, O Lord, your servant, as you delivered David from the hand of the giant Goliath † Deliver me, O Lord, your servant, as you delivered Peter from the sea and Paul from his bonds † So deliver me, O Lord, your servant, from this poverty, as you delivered the holy virgin and martyr Thecla from the three terrible torments † So deliver me, O Lord, from poverty †.

7.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., call, cite, compel and conjure you by the almighty power of God in delivering Enoch and Elijah from the common death of the world; by Isaac from the hand of Abraham; from false gods; by those from the Flood;12 by the rescue of Moses from the hands of Pharaoh, the Egyptian king; by the rescue of Daniel from the lions' den; by the rescue of David from the hand of Saul and of the giant Goliath; by all this by which you could be conjured in the Old and New Testament; and further by all these words of all those who have conjured you, and who still at this time conjure you, and in time to come shall compel and call you; and by that truth which is, that Jesus Christ truly died on the trunk of the Cross for the salvation of the human race. You, Terophi, I call, and I command you, I conjure you, that you appear in this hour, as truly, in all silence, without any fear and terror, without illusion and without interruption of this work, without harm to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm to this place, its crops and other things, in the fair human form of a man in fair clothing, and bring me a sum of money pr., without sorcery, without deceit, without illusion and trickery, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current in our whole kingdom. This is bidden, enjoined and commanded you by the infinite being and perfection of the immeasurable majesty of all the blissful eternal blessedness of God the Father †; by the protection, mercy, suffering and most bitter death of God the Son †; by the wisdom, counsel, strength and seven gifts of the Holy Ghost † Amen † † †.

8.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., cite, call, compel and conjure you; I enjoin and command you by the love of the Father, which he bore toward the human race, for whose redemption he gave his only-begotten Son; by the love of God the Son, for the sake of which he freely gave himself up for the redemption of the human race, took on human nature, suffered the heaviest pain and endured the most bitter death; by the grace of the Holy Ghost, through which he wrought human salvation; by the greeting of the holy angel Gabriel; by that most holy seed † from which the second Person in the Godhead became man; by that blood which the most blessed Virgin Mary carried beneath her heart; by the most holy body of Jesus Christ; by his most blessed soul; by his most blessed poverty; by his most holy body and blood, bones and sinews, veins, marrow, life and death; by the five wounds of the body of the Lord Jesus Christ, which he to the disciples on Good Friday through those most holy words of our Lord Jesus Christ with which he changed the bread into his most holy body, Jesus, and the wine into his most holy blood;13 by the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ; by the fearful and terrible name Aena † Tetragrammaton † Adonay † Aboy † Selach † Alpha et Omega † Dinch † Pasa †14 I conjure you, Terophi, by the four Evangelists, Saint John † Saint Matthew † Saint Mark † and Saint Luke †; by all angels and archangels †; by Saint Michael † by Saint Gabriel † by Saint Raphael † by Saint Uriel †; by the holy Seraphim and Cherubim †; by the Dominions and Principalities † Powers † and Thrones †; and by all the angels of God †; by the terrible name of Jesus † Christ †; by eternity; by that Word which was made flesh †. I conjure, call and compel you, Terophi, by the purity of the most blessed Virgin Mary; by her most blessed heart and her whole body, in which Godhead and manhood lay for nine months †; by her most holy soul; by her most holy death; by the truth of the holy Gospel †; by the sound of the trumpets15 of the archangels, and the voice of the angels: Arise, you dead, and come to judgement! † Hear, Terophi: I call you, compel you, conjure and command you by that terrible and fearful and most just judgement in the valley of Jehoshaphat, in which the whole human race, and you too, Terophi, with the whole host of your servants, shall be judged; by the most just sentence of God; by the curse upon the wicked; by the curse upon all your servants; by the joy of the elect; by the eternity from which God proceeds; by all that by which Solomon, Cornelius Agrippa, chanasses and Cyprian conjured and called the spirits. I conjure and compel, call, command, torment and torture you, Terophi, and I will not cease to compel, to call, to command and to torment you until you do my will, by all this by which you may and can be conjured, compelled and called. And as surely as God will truly come on the Last Day of judgement, as surely as the trumpets and the voice of the archangel will be heard, so surely shall you, Terophi, appear to me at this moment in silence, without terror, without illusion, without interruption of this work, without harm to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm to this place, its crops and other things, in the fair human form of a man in fair clothing, humble and peaceable, and bring me a sum of money pr. in good, true and proper gold, without delay, sorcery, falsehood, deceit or trickery, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current everywhere in this whole kingdom; and lay it down humbly and peaceably beside these our circles, at the place marked with the blessed palm branch. And this I command and enjoin you, and conjure you by the almighty power and by the most holy names of God the Father †; by the strength and the most holy, most terrible names of God the Son †; by the grace and the most holy, most terrible and trembling names of God the Holy Ghost † Fiat † Fiat †.

9.

Hear, Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., conjure, compel and call you by all the above once more; and again I conjure you by all this, and by all that is still to follow; and so long will I compel, torment and plague you, until you obey my will and bring me the sum of money asked for, without delay, without injury or harm to my body and soul and to my companions, and without harm to anything at all, in that fair human form of a man described before, without deceit and falsehood. May all the above torment you so long as you do not do my will. May the humility of Jesus Christ torment you. May the adoration of the shepherds compel you. May the blood of the innocent children plague you, Terophi, and the blood of all the holy martyrs. May the chastity and innocence of all the holy virgins torment you. May the truth of the holy Fathers, which they wrote, compel and plague you. May the institution of the Old and New Testament torment you, Terophi. May this power compel you, which God gave for me to Peter, the Vicar of Christ. May that power plague you which all the priests of the whole world have, those already dead and those who shall yet live. May that power of all these priests plague you. May that power compel you, Terophi, which they have in the holy sacrifice of the Mass, when they change bread into the most holy body of Jesus Christ and wine into his most holy blood. May every preacher compel you to do my will, and the calling of all who have been until now, and of priests to come, with which they shall conjure, call and compel you spirits. May all the words torment you with which chanasses, Cyprian, Cornelius Agrippa and Solomon conjured the spirits, until you have fulfilled my will. And as truly as Jesus Christ rose from death on the third day, and ascended into Heaven, and sent the Holy Ghost, the Comforter, so you too shall appear to me truly and without deceit at this moment, in silence, without terror, illusion, without interruption of this work, without injury to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm to this place, its crops and other things, in the fair human form of a man, and bring me a sum of money pr. in good, true and proper gold, without delay, falsehood, trickery and without illusion, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current everywhere in this kingdom; and lay it down peaceably, not throwing it between our circles but at the place marked with the blessed palm branch. This I command you in the name of God the almighty Father † before whom every knee shall bow. In the name of God the Son † Christ Jesus, who shed his holy blood for men. In the name of the Holy Ghost † the Comforter † who showed forth through his apostle Peter in Simon the sorcerer, and condemned your deceit in Ananias and Sapphira16 † † †.

10.

Hear, you spirit Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., call, compel, command and conjure you by the words and names above, and by all that by which you may and can be called. And if all this is not enough for you, and you will not obey my will, then I conjure, compel, call and torment you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ †. He commands you who commanded that you be hurled from Heaven into the deep; he commands you who commanded the sea and the winds and every storm † † †.

11.

Hear, Terophi, and fear and tremble before him who was sacrificed in Israel, slaughtered in the Lamb, crucified in man, who was thus the first conqueror of Hell. Do and fulfil my will, then, and bring me hither the sum of money desired, without falsehood, without injury to my body and soul and to my companions; and appear in the form of a man described before, and set it down too at the place before these circles marked with the blessed palm branch † in the name of God the Father † and of the Son † and of the Holy Ghost † Amen † † †.

12.

Hear, Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God N. N., conjure, call and compel you by the Judge of the living and the dead; by the Creator of the world; by him who has the power to hurl you into the everlasting fire: that you do my will as I have commanded you. I conjure you once more, not in my weakness but in the truth of the Holy Ghost, that you bring me hither the sum of money asked for, without resistance. Follow and be obedient, not to me, but to Jesus Christ, in whose image I am created, and by whose most holy and most precious blood I have been redeemed, and in whose mercy I believe and hope to obtain pardon and forgiveness of my sins and eternal life. May his power compel you, who made himself subject to his Cross. Tremble before him who, after he had overcome the wailing and sighing of Hell, led the souls to the light. Let the body of man be a fear and terror to you †; let the image of God be a fear to you †. Do not resist, nor delay to fulfil my will, and do not think that I am to be despised because you know that I am a very great sinner in the eyes of God; for I command in mercy and grace through the true God †. I lay it upon you by the majesty of Christ. I conjure you, Terophi, by God the Father † I conjure you by God the Son † I conjure you by the sacrament of the Cross † I cite you by the faith of the apostles Peter and Paul and of all the saints of God. I command you by the blood of the martyrs †; by the silence of the confessors; by the eternity of the Christian faith, of the mysteries of God, and of all virtues and powers; by the foresight of all the saints: that at this moment, without terror, without illusion, without interruption of this work, without injury to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm to this place, its crops and other things, you appear before me in the fair human form of a man, and bring me the sum of money desired pr. in good and just gold, without delay, without sorcery, deceit, falsehood, trickery and cunning, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; ready, proper money, current everywhere in our kingdom. Lay it down peaceably beside the outermost circle, not throwing it so as to bury us,17 but at the place marked with the palm branch. This I command you in the name of God the Father † and of the Son † and of the Holy Ghost † † †.

Psalm 5318

O God, save me in your name, and judge me in your strength. God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers have risen up against me, and the mighty have sought my soul, and they have not set God before their eyes. Behold, God helps me, and the Lord upholds my soul. Turn back the evil upon my enemies, and scatter them in your truth. Freely will I make you an offering, and give thanks to your name, Lord, because it is so good. For you have delivered me out of tribulation, and my eye has looked down upon my enemies. Glory be to God the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen †.

V. Make your servants worthy of salvation.

R. Who hope in you, my God.

V. Be to us, Lord, a strong tower.

R. Against our enemies.

V. Let the enemy have no power against us.

R. And let the child of wickedness not harm us.

V. Send us help from your Holy One.

R. And from Zion shield us.

V. Lord, deal not with us according to our sins.

R. And repay us not according to our wickedness.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come unto you.

Let Us Pray

O God, who do not despise the sigh of the contrite, nor scorn the longing of the afflicted: be present at our prayer, which we offer up to you for our tribulation, sorrow and affliction, and graciously hear it; and whatever the adversities of devils or of men devise against us, let it be brought to nothing and shattered by the counsel of your glory; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

13.

Hear, Terophi! I, the unworthy servant of God, conjure, compel and call you in the name of the spotless Lamb †, which has gone upon serpents and basilisks and has trodden down the dragon and the lion: that you gladly fulfil my request in all the circumstances commanded. Tremble and obey at the invoked name of God, at which Hell trembles; to which the powers of the heavens, the might and the dominions are subject; which the Cherubim and Seraphim praise with unwearied voice, saying, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of Sabaoth. I conjure you by him who was born of Mary the Virgin †. May Jesus Nazarenus19 † plague and torment you, who despised you with his disciples, and compelled you to go out of the man, so that you did not dare to enter into the herd of swine. I conjure you, call you and command you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ †, who received baptism in the Jordan and was led into the wilderness and overcame you: that you obey him whom he made out of the earth to the honour of his glory; and that in wretched man you tremble, not at human frailty, but at the image of God. Obey, therefore, God †, who drowned you and your following in Pharaoh and his host in the abyss through Moses. So God commands it †, who drove you out of King Saul with spiritual songs through his most faithful servant David. Obey your Lord and God and mine †, who damned you and Judas Iscariot the betrayer. May he strike you with the divine rod, in whose presence you said, trembling with your legions, What have you come for, Jesus, Son of the most high God? Have you come to torment us? May time plague and torment you, and may the eternal flames increase your endless pains, until you do my will. I conjure you by all that by which you have ever been conjured until this time; and by all that by which Solomon, Cornelius Agrippa, chanasses and Cyprian conjured the spirits I call, conjure and compel you; by all that by which you will and can be conjured, called and compelled. And as truly as Jesus Christ, after the consecration, is true man and God, with body and soul, in the Sacrament of the Altar, so you too shall appear before me in the fair human form of a man, really present20 and without fail, without fear, without illusion and interruption of this work, without harm to body and soul and to my companions, without injury to this place, its crops and other things, and bring me a sum of money pr. in good, true and proper gold, without delay, sorcery, deceit and illusion, falsehood and trickery, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current everywhere in this kingdom. And lay it down peaceably and humbly beside these our circles, not throwing it at us or pouring it over us, but lay it down peacefully at the place marked with the blessed palm branch †. This I command and enjoin you; to this I compel you in the name of the Father † who created me and the whole world out of nothing; in the name of the Son † who redeemed me and the whole human race with his precious blood; in the name of the Holy Ghost † who sanctified me and all Christians in holy baptism, and filled them with his gifts, and daily enlightens the understanding † † †.

If he should still not appear, repeat it from the beginning.

Prayer on Hearing and Seeing

O God, be merciful to me a sinner. By Jesus and by the power of God, tell me who you are. If you are a spirit, give me an answer.

When He Gives an Answer

I, N. N., ask first of all for God's grace, help and mercy, a long life and holiness, and a sum of money pr. in true and proper gold, without lingering, without sorcery, deceit, falsehood or cunning, out of the sea or out of the earth; money that profits neither God nor man; true, proper money, current in this kingdom. Lay it down peaceably and humbly beside our outermost circles, not throwing it, nor burying us, but at the place marked with the blessed palm branch. This I bid and command you: that at this moment, without terror, fear and illusion, and without interruption of this work, without injury to my body and soul and to my companions, without harm to this place, its crops and other things, you appear in the fair human form of a man in fair clothing, and do my will, to the honour of God, for my honest livelihood, for the help of my parents and kinsfolk, for the comfort of the poor souls in Purgatory. And this I bid you do by the power of God, his strength and might and glory; by all the holy names of God which I have read; and by those holy words which are spoken by the priests in every sacrifice of the Mass at the consecration, over the Host, namely This is my Body, and over the wine, This is my Blood, and by which they make almighty God come down from Heaven and change the bread into his most holy Body and the wine into his most holy Blood †.

Thanksgiving and Dismissal

In the peace of God you have come, obedient spirit. When I call you another time, appear to me again and do my will. Now turn back to the place from which you came, without harm to my body and soul and to my companions, without injury to this place, its crops and other things. The peace of God be between us and you. In the name of Jesus Christ we part from one another. May the most holy Trinity set bounds for you in your place from which you came. God the Father † be with you; God the Son be with me † and with my companions; God the Holy Ghost † be between us, so that we part from one another in the love and peace of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the name of God the Father † and of the Son † and of the Holy Ghost † Amen. †

How to Open the Circle

In the name of the Father † and of the Son † and of the Holy Ghost †: be loosed again, you three holy circles, with the same words with which I bound you, in the name of the Father † of the Son † and of the Holy Ghost † Amen.

Pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, one Creed.

Notes

Footnotes

  1. Printed so, in garbled Latin. It appears to be meant for catecheseos professor ordinarius publicus, "ordinary public professor of catechetics". ↩

  2. The print abbreviates "1 V. 1 A. 1 Gl.": one Vater unser (Our Father), one Ave (Hail Mary) and one Glaube (the Creed). The last line of the book spells them out. ↩

  3. These words are not found as such in Jeremiah. They seem to join Jeremiah 1:9 ("I have put my words in thy mouth") to Mark 16:17 ("in my name shall they cast out devils"). ↩

  4. The psalms are numbered as in the Latin Vulgate. This is Psalm 70 in the Hebrew numbering used by most English Bibles. ↩

  5. fl.: florins (Gulden). N. stands for the sum the operator names; 63,000 florins appears to be given as an example. ↩

  6. pr.: probably Latin pro, "for, to the amount of". Here and later the print leaves a blank space after it for the sum. ↩

  7. The print spells these names variously: Corneli Agripa, Cornelius Agripa, Cornelis Agripa; Cypriany, Cipriany, Cipryani. Cornelius Agrippa is the author of the Three Books of Occult Philosophy; Cyprian appears to be the legendary magician Cyprian of Antioch. ↩

  8. The print reads geliebt, evidently for Gelübde, "vow": Jacob's vow at Bethel (Genesis 28:20–22). ↩

  9. Psalms 119 and 120 in the Vulgate numbering are Psalms 120 and 121 in the Hebrew. The quotation runs loosely through Psalm 120:1 and Psalm 121. ↩

  10. Printed so. The word has not been identified; it may be a corruption of Latin mysterium, "mystery". Left as printed. ↩

  11. Printed chanalses here and chanasses in the later lists. The authority meant has not been identified. Left as printed. ↩

  12. The print reads durch Isak von der Hand Abrahams von falschen Göttern, durch die von dem Sündfluth. The sense is broken; it is translated as it stands. ↩

  13. The sentence is broken in the print: the verb that should follow "which he to the disciples" is missing. The words of institution belong to Maundy Thursday, but the print says Good Friday (Charfreytag). Translated as it stands. ↩

  14. Divine names, printed so. Tetragrammaton is Greek, "the four-lettered [name]", that is, YHWH; Adonay is Hebrew, "my Lord"; Alpha et Omega is Latin, "the Alpha and the Omega" (Revelation 1:8). Selach may be the Hebrew selah of the Psalms. Aena, Aboy, Dinch and Pasa have not been identified. ↩

  15. The print reads Tormenten, "torments", evidently a misprint for Trompeten, "trumpets", as in the phrase "the trumpets and the voice of the archangel" later in the same conjuration. ↩

  16. Simon the sorcerer: Acts 8:9–24. Ananias and Sapphira (printed annania und Sephonia): Acts 5:1–11. ↩

  17. The print reads wecke uns zuverschatten, evidently a misprint for weder uns zu verschütten, "nor to bury us", as in the parallel passage under "When He Gives an Answer". ↩

  18. Psalm 54 in the Hebrew numbering. ↩

  19. Latin, "Jesus the Nazarene". ↩

  20. The print reads wohnhafft, literally "dwelling, resident". It appears to carry on the comparison with Christ's presence in the Sacrament, and is rendered "really present". ↩
