The True Jesuit Coercion of Hell

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

"This book, it is true, is not meant to come into the hands of the common man, but of monasteries that have perhaps fallen into poverty and need."
— the Jesuiten-Höllenzwang, on its own readers

The Wahrhafter Jesuiten-Höllenzwang, "the True Jesuit Coercion of Hell", is the sixth of the fourteen magical works that Johann Scheible of Stuttgart gathered in 1851 as Doctor Faust's Bücherschatz, "Doctor Faust's Treasury of Books". Unlike most of its neighbours it is not put under Faust's name. Its title page gives it to "Father Eberhard, priest of the Society of Jesus at Ingolstadt", and calls it a "general compulsion of all spirits". It opens with its author's sworn guarantee and a few rules: work on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday three days before the new or full moon, between eleven and midnight, before a crucifix and three newly blessed candles, facing the sunrise; ask only for what lies uselessly buried or sunk, never for anything that would harm a neighbour; and remember the poor.

What follows is Catholic in its piety: an open confession on the pattern of the Confiteor, a prayer built from the Psalms, three Our Fathers and the Creed. Then come nine conjurations of a single spirit, Tarafael. Each one piles up the names, mysteries and saints of the faith, from Abel's sacrifice to the Last Judgement in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, with strings of divine names in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. Each one asks much the same thing: that Tarafael come quietly, without noise or harm or false visions, most often as a fair youth of ten dressed in green, twice "like a huntsman", and lay 50,000 florins in crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces, silver lost at sea, in front of the circle. The coins it names, crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces reckoned in florins, were current in southern Germany from the later eighteenth century, and the fourth conjuration calls on the words of "the Catholic and Lutheran churches" alike. The book ends with a dismissal, the words for drawing a threefold circle in white chalk, and a full-page plan of the working place set to the four quarters of the sky.

Translation

VI. The True Jesuit Coercion of Hell.

A general compulsion of all spirits, wherever they may be, by which they must do and obey as men desire; set down by Father Eberhard, priest of the Society of Jesus at Ingolstadt.

I, the above-named, swear before God and the heavenly Lord that if this is used and handled in the manner described below, the person will most certainly be heard. He may also use it without sin and without doubt, and without terror and fear. Indeed, a person can do all things if he is bold of heart and does not lose courage, says his prayer to God and his saint with a heart cleansed of sins, and has the intention of taking up the cause of the poor and helpless, of helping the poor souls by holy sacrifices of the Mass, or by alms and similar good works, and of not otherwise spending it in an evil and sinful way. Then there will be no doubt that he is heard.

  1. The work is to be done each time on the third day before the new moon or the full moon, on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, at night between 11 and 12 o'clock, before a crucifix and 3 quite new blessed wax candles, and facing the rising of the sun. 2) The prayer must be said in a clean room or else under the open sky. 3) One may ask of the spirit as much as one will in current coin, in gold or in silver pieces, but one must name it correctly. One must also then lay down how he is to appear, for example in a friendly human shape, and also appoint the place where he is to fetch what is asked and to bring it. 4) What one asks for must be asked from what lies uselessly hidden in the earth or has gone to the bottom in the sea, and must not touch one's neighbour's loss. But if one knows of a treasure, one can obtain it in the following way. Take the little book and go to the place where the treasure lies hidden; take 3 handfuls of that same earth, lay them on the little book, and let it lie for 3 times 24 hours. Then let it be fetched again, and have 3 holy Masses read over the little book for your intention, and the spirit will have to bring the hidden treasure. But if a man knows of no hidden treasure, let him only perform what stands above and what is still to come, and he will surely be fortunate.

NB: This book, it is true, is not meant to come into the hands of the common man, but of monasteries that have perhaps fallen into poverty and need. But should it come into the hands of a common man, and should he wish to use it, let him take a learned man who understands it, for otherwise he would obtain nothing. When one has obtained what one desires, let him not forget the poor and those in need.

The Open Confession

I, a poor sinner, confess to almighty God, to the ever-pure Virgin Mary, to holy John the Baptist, to the apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the saints, that I have, alas, sinned much in thoughts, words and deeds. My fault, my most grievous fault. Therefore I beg the most holy Virgin Mary, the archangel Michael, holy John the Baptist, the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and all the saints to pray for me to our Lord and God. Amen.

O God, attend to my help! Lord, make haste to help me, so that my enemies who lie in wait for my soul must be put to shame. They must turn back and stand in shame who would do me evil; they must soon blush red and withdraw. All who seek you must rejoice and be glad in you, and those who love your salvation must say for ever: Highly praised be the Lord! But I am needy and poor. O God, stand by me, for you are my helper and redeemer; O Lord, do not delay too long. Glory be to God the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. Make your child whole, who hopes in you; my God! be gracious to us, a strong tower against our enemies, and let the enemy and the child of wickedness have no power against us. Make your child whole, who hopes in you, my God and Lord! Send us help down from your heaven, and protect us out of Zion. Amen.1

Pray 3 Our Fathers and the Creed.

Do us no harm; deal not with us after our sins, and repay us not according to our wickedness.2

The First Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., unworthy child of God, call and conjure you per the eternity from which the most high Deus comes; by the almighty power and might of Deus, who rules over the heavens, hell and earth; per the most pure mysteries of the all-holy Trinitatis; per the most mighty word Fiat, which created all things; per the breath that Deo breathed into the first Hominium, Adam; and by the power that the sanctus archangel Michael had from Deo to hurl proud Lucifer with his host of angels into hell; per the reverence and obedience that all things in heaven and on earth and in hell owe to almighty God; per the strength, might and power of Deus, of the Filii, who redeemed the whole human race on the trunk of the holy †3 per his blood and made it blessed; per the strength, might and power of Deus, of the sanctus spiriti, who hallowed and cleansed all Christians in holy baptism; and per the compulsion with which Solomon compelled the Daemonen; per everything whereby they can and may ever be compelled:4 that you, Tarafael, at once, this very moment, without causing any delusion or false sight, without any noise and uproar, without any harm either to me or to my created creatures, whoever they may be, without any sign given, either in the air or on earth, appear visibly in fair human shape, namely as a fair youth of 10 years, dressed in green, and bring me out of the sea 50,000 florins in current, whole or half crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces, in current silver coin,5 which has gone to the bottom in the sea, and lay it down before my circle quite quietly and visibly. This I command you in the most holy N[ame] of Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Second Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., Accerfere et Adjurare6 you per the innermost of the Godhead, per the strength, might and power of the all-holy Godhead; by the prayer and acceptable sacrifice of Abel, by his innocent blood, by the piety of Jacob, and by the patience of Job; by the cursing and malediction that God gave Cain; by the call to Moses in the burning bush, which Moses at once obeyed: and so appear swiftly, Tarafael, without any noise and uproar, without any harm either to me or to anyone of my other comrades, without any signs given, either in the air or on earth, visibly in fair human form, as a fair youth of 10 years, dressed in green, and bring me a treasure out of the sea, 50,000 florins, in whole or half crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces, in current silver coin, which has gone to the bottom in the sea, and lay it down quite quietly and obediently, visibly, before my circle. This I command you in the most holy N[ame] of Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Third Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., call and conjure you by the 12 tribes of Israel; by the blessing of Abraham; by the wrath of God upon the people of Israel for the worship of the golden calf; by the benefits and wonders that God gave through Moses and showed the children of Israel;7 by the obedience of Isaac toward his father Abraham, to whom the angels came; by the penance of King David; and by the oath that God swore to Abraham, and by the most holy words of God: Hel † Helison † Hela † Tetragrammaton † Adonay † Saday † Sother † Emanuel † Alpha † et Omega † Primus et novissimus, Principium et finis † Agios † Ischiros † o Theos † Adanatos Jehova † Homousion † Ja † Messias Eli †.8 The Father is uncreated, Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands, Christ makes alive †. May Christ, the Son of the true living God, compel you, Tarafael; may Christ, who for the sake of our salvation came down from heaven, took on human nature and was made flesh, compel you, Tarafael, to bring hither, visibly before my circle, in fair human shape, a temporal good out of the sea, 50,000 florins in whole or half coins, which has gone to the bottom in the sea. By the intercession of the most holy and most blessed Virgin Mary, of all angels and holy apostles, and of the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and also by the merits of Benedict, Ignatius, Fortunatus, Eusebius, Sibald, Cyprian and Anthony,9 may these compel you by everything with which Cornelius Agrippa, Moses and Solomon compelled the spirits, and also by everything by which you can ever be compelled: that you this moment, without any delusion and false sight, without any noise and uproar, without any harm either to me or to the others, without any sign given, either in the air or on the earth, appear before me in fair human shape, and bring me as I desire out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces in current kinds of silver coin, and lay it down visibly before my circle; and this indeed by the obedience that heaven, earth and hell owe to the most high God.

The Fourth Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., call and conjure you by the oath that King David swore to the most high God, and by the penance that turned God's wrath away from David, and by the mercy of God himself. I cried to the Lord in my distress, and the Lord heard me. I have lifted up my eyes to the hill from which help will come to me. My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.10 I, N. N., call and conjure you, Tarafael, by all the holy words that have been spoken by all the priests of the Catholic and Lutheran churches in all the world, in all holy Masses, and are still spoken, until the end of the world: that you appear to me at once in a fair human shape, as a boy of ten years, dressed in green like a huntsman, and bring me as I desire out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces, in current silver coin; but without fear and noise, without harm to body and soul, either of me or of my other creatures, without any signs, either in the air or on earth; and lay this money down for me visibly before my circle, but in all quietness, as truly as God is merciful, faithful and true. Amen.

The Fifth Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., call and conjure you by the power of the Word, that heaven and earth under the dominion under which you and the whole following of hell must stand;11 by the wrath of God upon the godless world, when he punished it with the Flood; by the sign of peace that Noah received in the ark through the dove, that he would not punish the world with water: so I, N. N., conjure you † by the oath of the most high God, Tarafael; by the power of the agony of Jesus Christ, by his inward and outward sorrow, and the blood and water that he sweated on the Mount of Olives; by his threefold prayer, and by his word that threw the Jewish soldiers to the ground; and by the adjuration with which Caiaphas adjured the Son of God. I, N. N., conjure you, Tarafael, by the living God and Son of God, by all the torments that he endured in his Passion for the human race, and by his bitter death, resurrection and ascension, and by the sending of the Holy Ghost. I, N. N., conjure you, Tarafael, by the strict justice of God, that you come instantly and truly, as a boy of 10 years, dressed in green like a huntsman, without any confusion, without delusion and false sight, without any noise and uproar, without any harm to me and to my companions who are here, without any sign given, either in the air or on earth, to appear; and bring me out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces, in current coin, which have gone to the bottom in the sea, and lay them down before my circle12 truly and visibly, quite quietly. This I command you in the most holy N[ame] of Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Sixth Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., call and conjure you by the power and might of God the Almighty, by the divine counsel of the most holy Trinity, how the human race was redeemed. I conjure you, Tarafael, by all the holy archangels †. principalities, dominions and powers, virtues, and by all the cherubim and seraphim, who cry with unceasing voice: Holy, H[oly], H[oly] is the Lord Sabaoth, heaven and earth is of his glory †. Hosanna in the highest; and by the words Emanuel † Amaton, Jan;13 and as you freed Peter and Paul for us from the chains in prison, so, O Lord! free me and mine and all your unworthy servants from all present affliction, poverty, misery and need; and as you freed the most blessed Virgin Mary from all sin, so free us from our poverty, misery and need. I conjure you, Tarafael, by the deliverance of Abraham from the Chaldean enemies, by the rescue of Daniel from the lions' den, and by everything by which you have been compelled in the Old and New Testament: that you this very moment appear before me in fair human shape, as a youth of 10 years, dressed in green, without delusion, without any harm, without any noise and uproar, either to me or to my companions, without any sign given, either in the air or on earth, and bring me out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers and 24-kreuzer pieces, in current kinds of silver coin, which have gone to the bottom in the sea, and lay that sum down before my circle visibly and quietly. This I command you, Tarafael, by the most holy N[ame] of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns from eternity to eternity. Amen.

The Seventh Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., call and conjure you by the love that God the Father had toward the human race, that he gave his dear Son for it and also sacrificed him for the sake of men; by the love of God the Son, when he freely offered himself to become man for us, to suffer and to die; by the goodness of God the Holy Ghost, when he worked together in the redemption of the human race; by all the drops of blood, the agony and need, and also for the sake of his most holy head and the noble rose-coloured blood that flowed from it; by all the torments and pains of his holy body, from his birth to the end of his life; by everything by which you can be compelled: that you come instantly in the fair shape of a youth of 10 years, quietly and without great stir, delusion and falsehood, noise or uproar, without any harm either to me or to the others who are with me, without any sign given, either in the air or on earth; and bring me out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers and twenty-four-kreuzer pieces in current kinds of silver coin, which has gone to the bottom in the sea, and lay it before my circle for me, so that I see it. This I command you in the most holy name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Eighth Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., call and conjure you per the most holy prayer and birth of Jesus Christ, per his rose-coloured blood that he shed in his tender childhood; by the three wise men from the East; by the truth that Jesus Christ preached and taught in the Temple; by his passion and death; by his most pure and most secret Godhead; by the most terrible words of all, which follow: Asrat † Deticion † Ayon † Tetragrammaton † Ton † Ischiros † Adonay † Abua † Jal † Menachi † Eyostium † Quilum † Quiest † Altissima † Alpha † et Omega † et me † Ocst †;14 per the four evangelists Mathäus † Marcus † Lucas † et Johannes †, per the three kings Casper † Melchior † Balthasar †; by the holy archangels Saint Michael, Gabriel and Raphael; by the most holy name of Jesus Christ, before which the evil spirits tremble; by the eternal truth, and the Word was made flesh; by the truth of the holy Gospel: Arise, you dead, and come to judgement; by the terrible Day of Judgement in the Valley of Jehoshaphat; by the terror that Christ with his shining cross will strike into all the damned in hell; by the comfort that all the devout will receive from it; by the just sentence of God's justice; by the cursing of the damned and the rejoicing of the righteous and elect; by the eternal God, per all his attributes and perfections; by everything by which you have been compelled and will yet be compelled: that you forthwith bring me out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers, which has gone to the bottom in the sea. As truly as God will come to judge the living and the dead, as truly as the dead on the Day of Judgement will hear the sound of the trumpet and the call of the angel, and thereupon will rise and appear before the judgement seat of God in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, so truly hear my call; and this indeed by the Godhead and the manhood, by the power that God was made flesh, and as truly as God is, and as truly as the second Person15 in the Godhead became man for the human race, suffered, and redeemed all men by his bitter passion and death: so truly come and appear, you Tarafael, in human shape as a youth of 10 years, without any delusion and falsehood. This I command you by the bliss of Jesus: without any harm either to me or to the others who are with me, without any signs given, either in the air or on earth, bring me out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers and twenty-four-kreuzer pieces in current kinds of silver coin, which has gone to the bottom in the sea, and lay it down before my circle visibly and quietly. This I command you, Tarafael, by the name of Jesus Christ and by his great might of his glory and of his majesty of God. Amen.

The Ninth Conjuration

Hear, Tarafael! I, N. N., call and conjure you once more by all that has gone before; by the humility of Christ; by all the powers of heaven; by the written truth of the holy Fathers; by the written truth of the holy apostles; by everything they taught and preached; by the institution of the Old and New Testament; and by everything by which you may and must be compelled, and by which you have already been compelled: that you, Tarafael, this very moment, without any delusion or falsehood, without any harm either to me or to the rest who are with me, without any sign given, either in the air or on earth, appear before me, and bring me out of the sea 50,000 florins in whole or half crown thalers and twenty-four-kreuzer pieces in current kinds of silver coin, and lay the sum demanded down before my circle in the greatest quiet, visibly, as truly as the second Person in the Godhead is present everywhere. Amen.

The Dismissal

In the peace of God you came hither, obedient spirit; now go hence to the place from which you came. And when by God's might, power and strength I desire you again, that you come to me and appear obediently and fulfil my desire. Depart from me and from all creatures, without any harm to body and soul. The peace of God be between me, you and all of mine who are with me, and in the name of Jesus Christ we part from one another. May the holy Trinity ordain and call you to your former place. God the Father be with you, God the Son with me, and God the Holy Ghost be with us all, that we may part from one another in love and joy. In the name of the most holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. Amen. Our Father, etc.

The Circle

The circle is made with white chalk, and one speaks thus:

The first circle I make by the power of almighty God the Father, by his divine power, and I bind it thereby.

The second circle I make by God the Son, who died for me and for the whole world on the trunk of the holy Cross, and redeemed us by his redemption and bitter death; and I bind it thereby.

The third circle I make by the Holy Ghost, by his divine grace, power and flames of fire, out of love toward us men, and I bind it thereby. So all three circles are closed: by the power of God the Father, who created us; by the power of God the Son, who redeemed the human race; and by the Holy Ghost, who hallowed us; by all the holy works of God; by the almighty mercy of God the Father, the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. Amen. By these three divine Persons all three circles are closed and bound. Before one goes out of the circle, one says this prayer:

In the name of God the Father, and in the peace of God the Son, Jesus Christ, and in the blessing and the dispensing of the grace of God the Holy Ghost, we go out of the circle. The blessing of Jesus Christ of Nazareth be with us. Amen.

Wahrhafter Jesuiten-Höllenzwang, from J. Scheible, Doctor Faust's Bücherschatz, part 1 (Stuttgart, 1851), pp. 249–260; transcribed from BSB 10132967.

VI.

Hel † Helison † Hela † Tetragrammaton † Adonay † Saday † Sother † Emanuel † Alpha † et Omega † Primus et novissimus, Principium et finis † Agios † Ischiros † o Theos † Adanatos Jehova † Homousion † Ja † Messias Eli †.

Amen.

Notes

Footnotes

  1. The prayer follows Psalm 70 (69 in the Vulgate), whose first verse, Deus, in adiutorium meum intende, is rendered "O God, attend to my help". The petitions that follow the Gloria appear to render the Latin versicles of the Church's prayers for the sick and troubled (Salvum fac servum tuum … sperantem in te; Esto ei, Domine, turris fortitudinis; Nihil proficiat inimicus; Mitte ei auxilium de sancto, et de Sion tuere eum). ↩

  2. Compare Psalm 103:10. ↩

  3. The print sets a cross sign in place of the word Kreuz, giving only its ending: des h. †es, "of the holy Cross". ↩

  4. The Latin words set into the German: per, "by, through"; Deus, Deo, "God"; Trinitatis, "of the Trinity"; Fiat, "let it be" (Genesis 1:3 in the Vulgate); Hominium appears to be a garbled hominem, "man"; sanctus, "holy"; Filii, "of the Son"; sanctus spiriti appears to be a garbled Sancti Spiritus, "of the Holy Spirit"; Daemonen, "demons". ↩

  5. fl. is the florin or gulden; the Kronenthaler or crown thaler was a large silver coin; 24 kr. Stück are silver pieces of 24 kreuzer. ↩

  6. Printed so. This appears to be a misprint for the Latin accersere (arcessere), "to summon", with et adjurare, "and to adjure": Latin infinitives standing where the German wants "I summon and adjure". ↩

  7. The print reads erzeicht, apparently for erzeigt, "showed". ↩

  8. Mostly divine names and titles in Hebrew, Greek and Latin: Tetragrammaton (the four-letter name of God), Adonay ("Lord"), Saday (Shaddai, "the Almighty"), Sother (Greek sōtēr, "Saviour"), Emanuel ("God with us"), Alpha et Omega, Primus et novissimus ("the first and the last"), Principium et finis ("the beginning and the end"), Agios, Ischiros, o Theos, Adanatos (the Greek Trisagion, "holy, strong, God, immortal", the last a corrupt form of athanatos), Homousion ("of one substance"), Messias ("Messiah"), Eli ("my God"); Ja may be Jah. Hel, Helison and Hela are left as printed. ↩

  9. The saints' names are in the Latin genitive: Benedicti, Ignati, Fortunati, Eusebi, Sibaldi, Cypriani et Antoni. ↩

  10. Compare Psalms 120:1 and 121:1–2. ↩

  11. The clause breaks off in the print: "that heaven and earth" has no verb. It is translated as it stands. ↩

  12. The print reads Krais for Kreis, "circle". ↩

  13. The Sanctus, abbreviated in the print (Heilig H., H.). Emanuel is "God with us"; Amaton and Jan are left as printed. ↩

  14. Among these, Tetragrammaton, Ischiros (Greek, "strong"), Adonay ("Lord"), Altissima (Latin, "highest"), Alpha et Omega and et me (Latin, "and me") can be recognised; the rest are left as printed. ↩

  15. The print reads die anderen Personen, "the other Persons", with a singular verb (ist Mensch worden) and sein bitteres Leiden, "his bitter passion". It is read as die andere Person, "the second Person", as in the ninth conjuration. ↩

  16. The print has Exorcitors, an odd form of "exorcist". I. H. S. is the monogram of the name of Jesus. C. † M. † B. appear to be the initials of the three kings Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, named in the eighth conjuration, in the form chalked over doors at Epiphany. L. and M. beside the strokes are not explained in the text. ↩
