"Farther than the farthest, akappēy, and not far at all. Look without looking."
— Akappēy Cittar, Akappēyc Cittar Pāṭalkaḷ
Akappēyc Cittar Pāṭalkaḷ (அகப்பேய்ச் சித்தர் பாடல்கள், "The Songs of Akappēy Cittar") is a cycle of ninety short verses by one of the Tamil Siddhars (cittar), the sage-poets of yoga and inner knowledge. The poet's name comes from the poem itself. He pictures his restless, wandering mind as a woman-ghost (pēy) and calls to her as akappēy, "ghost within", in every verse; from this he is called Akappēy Cittar, and, as the name wore down in use, also Akappaic Cittar, "the Ladle Siddhar". The Project Madurai editor notes that nothing else is known of him.
Each verse has four short lines, and the first and third lines end with the call akappēy! The first verses walk through the Śaiva map of the cosmos: sound and the point (nāda and bindu), the elements and their colours, the letters of the sacred syllable, the tattvas. Then the poet throws the map away. Temple service, ritual, yoga, scripture, mantra, holy bathing, caste and religion itself are set aside as false, and the mind is told, again and again, to know itself and just be still. In these songs, the editor notes, Śaivam means love, and their themes are a life without ego, the refusal of caste division, and the refusal of the śāstras.
Translation
The Songs of Akappēy Cittar
1. You need not drink poison, akappēy,1
to reach the feet of the Lord.
Don't let your heart be shaken, akappēy;
say nothing at all.
2. It is the Highest beyond the high, akappēy;
it came forth as an ocean.
The earth and the seven worlds, akappēy,
it made all by itself.
3. It is nāda, it is Veda, akappēy —
have you seen the good dance?
The foot is Śakti, akappēy,
the supreme bindu and nāda.2
4. Bindu and nāda, akappēy,
came forth, truly.
The five great elements, akappēy,
came to be from them.
5. The four paths, akappēy3 —
you have seen the good way;
but unless it is the root, akappēy,
it is not liberation.
6. Speech and the other four, akappēy —4
hear how they came.
They arose all together, akappēy,
but they are not the Real.
7. Sound and the other four, akappēy,5
were made into scripture;
the Āgamas are falsehood too, akappēy —
I have told you the truth.
8. Speaking and the other four, akappēy,6
came in their full strength;
the nāḍīs are ten, akappēy, ten —
see, this is certain.
9. All that became the cause, akappēy,
I have told you as I saw it.
See, it is death, akappēy,
all the ways it came.
10. The six tattvas, akappēy,
are what the Āgama has told;
and the unchanging maṇḍalas, akappēy,
came as three.
11. Earth is golden, akappēy —
this is no foolishness.
And the form that is water, akappēy,
is white in truth.
12. Fire is red, akappēy —
see, that is sure.
Air is blue, akappēy;
I will tell you of the sky.
13. The sky is mist, akappēy;7
listen how it came.
Nothing here is lacking, akappēy;
I have told you what is.
14. All of this is the letter A, akappēy;
there it rose up.
Joined with U, akappēy,
it came taking form.
15. The letter M is māyā, akappēy —
I have told you, it is the mala.8
The letter Śi is the root, akappēy;
think on it.
16. Letters and worlds, akappēy,
mantra and tantra too —
I will tell you still more, akappēy;
listen at once.
17. As far as the atti, akappēy,9
and all the fifty-one letters —
see, they are false, akappēy;
do not trust them as true.
18. What became the tattvas, akappēy,
came as everything.
I have told you of the intellect too, akappēy —
is it not the shape of the elements?
19. All these kinds of things, akappēy,
are not our Lord.
That kind is other, akappēy —
won't you search and see?
20. If you want your sin to end, akappēy,
you must not imagine.10
There is no dying either, akappēy:
it is the true guru's feet.
21. However much is said, akappēy,
my mind will not be settled.
Leave both cit and acit, akappēy,11
and you will see them joined.
22. The six religions, akappēy,12
came by their own making.
The place where all stands settled, akappēy —
search it out and tell me.
23. It comes to six times six, akappēy;13
I have told you they will not do.
If there is something else, akappēy,
tell me the truth of it.
24. When you know yourself, akappēy,
you will cling to nothing.
The way to know yourself, akappēy —
I will tell you as it is.
25. Caryā will not do, akappēy —
see, it gets you God's world.
Even if you do kriyā, akappēy,14
nothing comes of it.
26. Yoga will not do, akappēy,
once you have seen what is.
Wisdom is in the body, akappēy —
I have told you: no need to seek.
27. It is a five-headed cobra, akappēy,
and the gain is small.
The one who cures this poison, akappēy —
see, it is our Lord.
28. All that is called "the Lord", akappēy —
what kind of thing is it?
Listen as I tell you, akappēy:
it is bliss.
29. I have found it, akappēy!
My longing is broken open.15
I have eaten it, akappēy —
you have told what is.
30. Even when what is is told, akappēy,
you must see it for yourself.
Your guile will not leave you, akappēy;
those who have seen are full of longing.
31. Though they stand there knowing, akappēy,
they do not fear, I tell you.
The hard deeds you have done, akappēy,
will not leave you.
32. It is the Lord's bond, akappēy,
all that you have seen this way.
The bond has been schooled in you, akappēy —16
now see the Supreme.
33. Śāstras and sūtras, akappēy,
all that became mere resolve,
you must not look to, akappēy;
see, their fruit is waste.
34. Have you seen the way, akappēy,
for that karma to end?
To be made clear and settled, akappēy,
don't go bathing at holy fords.
35. However long, akappēy,
you sit in yoga — so what?
Will you become one who is freed, akappēy?
Will there be mokṣa?
36. Toward your own ruin, akappēy,
don't go seeking, I told you.
Even if the bond goes, akappēy,
the cattle do not go.17
37. What is shame for, akappēy,
once good deeds are done with too?
If you want to see it, akappēy,
it is not there to be seen.
38. Just be still, akappēy —
I have told you the secret formula.
The place where you were still, akappēy,
see, that is what I pointed to.18
39. Not seeing yourself, akappēy,
you crept into the flesh.
Not seeing me, akappēy,
you came into this place.
40. Even if you race up to the sky, akappēy,
you will come back and be born.
Not drinking the honey, akappēy,
you wandered the streets.
41. Śaivam is this, akappēy:19
it stood as itself.
If there is no Śaivam, akappēy,
see, turmoil comes.
42. Where desire has ceased, akappēy,
see, that is right conduct.
It is the Lord's bond, akappēy,
wherever you go.
43. The root of āṇava, akappēy,20
came as the letter A;
the crooked U, akappēy,
was born alongside it.
44. There is nothing at all, akappēy;
it has become just as it is.
No good and no evil, akappēy,
and no shame either.
45. The place where you were still, akappēy,
I have told you is what I pointed to.
What magic is this? I don't know, akappēy;
I cannot see even myself.
46. What are the arts for, akappēy?
Won't those who see you laugh?
What are the stages for, akappēy?
Tell me who you are.
47. The moon is nectar, akappēy,
and the sun is poison, then.
The moon is white, akappēy,
and the sun is red.
48. Not male, not female, akappēy —
see, it is fire.
Tāṇu is just so, akappēy;21
see, it is the true guru.
49. Whatever you study, akappēy,
it will not become our word.
You have heard what I said, akappēy:
just be still.
50. Forests and mountains, akappēy —
what if the penance is harsh?
Will release lie open as the sky, akappēy?22
Must it not be made real?
51. Even if you go to the Supreme, akappēy,
it comes back to earth.
The place beyond the Supreme, akappēy —
see, it is the Void.23
52. What are five faces for, akappēy,
when they are torn like cotton?24
The lifted foot, akappēy —
see, it is the guru's foot.
53. There is no flaw, akappēy,
where the foot stands.
All that came down the Ganges, akappēy,
look at it and be clear.
54. Where the self stands ended, akappēy,
see, that is Śaivam.
For those who stand with the flesh ended, akappēy,
there is no lack at all.
55. Whose is Śaivam, akappēy?
Theirs who know themselves.
Where Śaivam has come to be, akappēy,
is the true guru's feet.
56. If you want birth to end, akappēy,
make no divisions.
Those who have renounced, akappēy,
simply stay still.
57. Whoever else may wander, akappēy,
don't you wander.
Even if the whole town wanders, akappēy,
seek nothing at all.
58. A river of honey flows, akappēy,
for those who have seen the holy feet;
there is no river of flesh, akappēy —
seek nothing at all.
59. Can white become black, akappēy?
Can silver become copper?
Is there anything that is, akappēy?
I swear it by you — see.
60. It abides within knowing, akappēy;
there is no support.
Knowing is a bond, akappēy;
see, it is grace.
61. It has risen on the breath, akappēy —25
won't you seek the Thing of heaven?
Even riding the breath, akappēy,
it will not come, I told you.
62. Farther than the farthest, akappēy,
and not far at all.
Look without looking, akappēy,
if you want wretched karma to end.
63. It is nothing that was made, akappēy;
I have told you what is.
Will those who have seen it speak, akappēy?
It is beyond imagining.26
64. The Lord the four Vedas cannot see, akappēy —
who will see him?
At the end of the four Vedas, akappēy,
are the good guru's feet.
65. There is no root, akappēy,
there are no three realities.27
If there were a root, akappēy,
there would be liberation too.
66. It is a conjuror's trick, akappēy,
the eighty-one padas too.28
Mantras are just the same, akappēy;
don't open your mouth.
67. If you want to become the Void, akappēy,
don't trust what you see.
I have told you without your asking, akappēy;
there is not even a question.
68. There is no caste distinction, akappēy,
for those who stand as themselves.
Even if you chant and understand, akappēy,
there is nothing in it at all.
69. Sky all around, akappēy,
in a grove ringed with trees:
a wood-apple eaten by vēḻam, akappēy —29
see, that is the truth.
70. There is no self, akappēy,
and there is no Lord.
There is no self, akappēy,
and there is no true guru.
71. There is no mantra, akappēy,
and there is no torment.30
There is no tantra, akappēy;
religion is destroyed.
72. Worship is a demon, akappēy;
knowing itself is a cage.31
The Lord is māyā, akappēy —
all of it is like this.
73. It cannot be spoken, akappēy;
even to speak it is a fault.
It is not, it is not, akappēy —
see, it stands alone.
74. The god of the tattvas, akappēy,
became Sadāśiva.
All the other gods, akappēy,
are shapes of māyā.
75. It is not a word, akappēy;
it is beyond the reach of speech.
It is nothing taken on, akappēy;
it did not come with me.
76. There is no śāstra, akappēy;
it has passed beyond all stirring.
It cannot be looked at, akappēy;
imagining cannot reach it.
77. What if you study, akappēy?
What if you do anything at all?
All the ways I have told, akappēy —
see, that is what they point to.
78. You must know yourself, akappēy;
you must cling without clinging.
All the knowing that comes after, akappēy,
is a ghost's knowing.
79. Even if you beg for alms, akappēy,
birth will not be done with.
Where desire is gone, akappēy,
see, there is our Lord.
80. No adornment, akappēy,
no sophistry,
no trickery, akappēy,
no wavering.
81. It is no show, akappēy —
I swear by you, I have told you.
Like salt in water, akappēy,
search it out and stay.
82. They do not want mokṣa, akappēy,
nor do they want mukti;
they do not want initiation, akappēy —
those who have become pure awareness.
83. A child, a demon, akappēy,
a madman to look at;
not the three times, akappēy,
and not a thing that is done.
84. There is no seeing, akappēy.
If there is one who has seen,
must there still be "there is", akappēy?32
I swear by you, I have told you.
85. Don't feast on the five, akappēy,33
and do not want desire.
Let go of the heart too, akappēy,
and don't settle into niṣṭhā.
86. In the truth beyond nāda, akappēy,
seek nothing, I told you.
And the caution heaped on top, akappēy,34
don't trust it as true.
87. If one joins with another, akappēy,
see, even the one is lost.
Even Paraśiva, standing there, akappēy,
will not stand — see.
88. All the deeds that appear, akappēy —
see, they are emptiness.
It appears without appearing, akappēy,
in the pure open space.
89. Don't call it false, akappēy:
it is only coming and going.
If you call it true, akappēy,
you may gain release.
90. Don't chant the Veda, akappēy;
don't say, "We have seen the truth."
Don't trust the feet, akappēy;
don't look by imagining.

Footnotes
-
Akappēy, "ghost within": from akam, "inside, the heart", and pēy, "ghost, demoness". The poet calls his own restless mind by this name in every verse, as a woman-ghost to be scolded and taught. Most verses also carry aṭi, the familiar way of calling to a woman or girl; it is not rendered separately. ↩
-
Nāda ("sound") and bindu ("drop, point") are the first stirrings of the cosmos in Śaiva teaching, from which the rest unfolds; Śakti is the power of Śiva, the Lord's own energy. ↩
-
Nālu pātam, "the four feet": glossed by the Project Madurai editor as caryai, kiriyai, yōkam, ñāṉam, the four stages of the Śaiva path (service, ritual, yoga, wisdom). Verses 25 and 26 take them up one by one. ↩
-
Vākkāti, "speech and the rest": the editor's gloss names the five organs of action (speech, feet, hands, the organ of excretion and the organ of generation). The next word, okkam, "togetherness, likeness", is uncertain here; "arose all together" is the plainest reading. ↩
-
Cattāti, "sound and the rest": the five objects of the senses (sound, touch, form, taste, smell). ↩
-
Vacaṉāti, "speaking and the rest": the five actions of the organs named in verse 6. The nāḍīs are the channels of breath and life in the yogic body, counted as ten. ↩
-
Mañcu, "mist, cloud". After the colours of earth, water, fire and air, the sky's colour is that of mist. ↩
-
Malam, "impurity": in Śaiva teaching the soul is bound by the malas (ego, karma and māyā). Here the syllable A-U-M is read letter by letter, and Śi, the syllable of Śiva, is set at the root. ↩
-
Atti is glossed by the editor as "elephant" and as "nāḍī"; varai means "up to, as far as". The line probably counts the letters "as far as" some last term, with the fifty-one letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, but the exact sense of atti varaivāṭi is uncertain. ↩
-
Pāvikka, from bhāvanā: to picture, imagine or meditate on a form. The verse plays on pāvam, "sin", and pāvi, "imagine". Compare verses 76 and 90. ↩
-
Cit and acit: the conscious and the unconscious, spirit and matter. ↩
-
Camayam āṟum, "the six religions": the six traditional creeds or schools. ↩
-
Āṟāṟu, "six sixes": the thirty-six tattvas (principles of reality) of Śaiva doctrine. ↩
-
The editor glosses cariyai as worshipping God set up in a temple and kiriyai as worshipping God by the rule of the Āgamas. The first is said to win cālōkam (sālokya), a place in God's world, which the poet counts as no liberation. ↩
-
Kātal viṇṭēṉ: viḷ is "to split open, to let out, to speak". It may mean "I have spoken my love" or "I have let my longing go". The rendering keeps both. ↩
-
Pācam payiṉṟatu, literally "the bond has practised / grown familiar". The sense of this line is uncertain. ↩
-
Pacu, "cattle": in Śaiva teaching the bound souls are paśu, the cattle; pāśa is the rope that binds them; pati is the Lord who owns them. ↩
-
Cuṭṭatu: "what is pointed to" (from cuṭṭu, to point out). It can also mean "what was burned". The rendering "pointed to" is used throughout (verses 38, 45, 77). ↩
-
Caivam, "Śaivism": the editor notes that in these songs caivam means love (aṉpu). ↩
-
Āṇavam: the impurity of ego, the first of the malas that bind the soul. ↩
-
Tāṇu (Sanskrit sthāṇu), "the pillar, the unmoving": a name of Śiva. ↩
-
Vīṭu means both "home" and "release, liberation"; veḷi is "the open, outer space, the sky". The question plays on both. ↩
-
Pāḻ, "waste, ruin, emptiness": in the Siddhar poets it names the Void beyond all things. ↩
-
Śiva is pictured with five faces. Pañcu paṭuttāl, "if it is made cotton", plays on pañcu, "cotton", and pañca, "five"; the sense is uncertain. Kuñcita pātam is glossed by the editor as the foot lifted and curved in the dance. ↩
-
Vāci: the Siddhars' word for the breath controlled in yoga. The Thing of heaven (vāṉ poruḷ) is the highest Reality. ↩
-
The source prints kaṟvaṉai, which is read as kaṟpaṉai, "imagining". ↩
-
Mupporuḷ, "the three things": in Śaiva teaching, the Lord, the soul and the bond. ↩
-
Indrajāla, "Indra's net": a conjuror's illusion. The eighty-one padas ("words") are a fixed count in the Śaiva mapping of the cosmos. ↩
-
The editor glosses marakkā as "grove" and vēḻam (usually "elephant") as a blight that seizes the wood-apple. A Tamil saying speaks of such a fruit as whole outside and hollow within. ↩
-
Vātaṉai, "torment, pain"; it may also stand for vāsanā, the lingering traces of past deeds. ↩
-
Kōṭṭam: "a pen, an enclosure, a prison", and also "crookedness" and "temple". The line can be read with any of these. ↩
-
Uṇṭatu vēṇṭaṭiyō: perhaps "must there be 'there is'?", or "is what was eaten still wanted?". The sense is uncertain. ↩
-
The source prints añcayum, read as añcaiyum, "the five" (the senses). Niṭṭai (niṣṭhā) is glossed by the editor as Śiva-yoga, the settled stillness of meditation. ↩
-
Cūtāṉam, "caution, care" (the editor's gloss). ↩
