"We did not roam like dogs; we sat in tapas."
— Vakuḷinātar, the Silent Siddhar, Mauṉaccittar Pāṭal
This is the song of Vakuḷinātar, who is called the Mauṉa Cittar, the Silent Siddhar. It stands first in the ninth part of Project Madurai's collection of Siddhar songs, beside the songs of the Puṇṇākku, Kañcamalai and Noṇṭi Siddhars. The Siddhars (Tamil cittar) were wandering yogis and poets who sought liberation in the body itself, through breath, inner fire and the grace of Śiva and the Goddess, and who had little patience for ritual or for the world's affairs.
The song is set as kuṟavañcippā, a lilting folk measure, in twelve verses of four lines. It opens in praise of the primal Light and of the Goddess Manōṉmaṇi, then speaks mostly as "we": we bow to the great ones, we curb pride, we hold the breath, we raise the fire from the root, we leave our kin for a mountain cave, we see the supreme Space that sight cannot reach. Near the end the voice turns to "I", and the singer tells how he cut away the ego that says "I" and came to rest in tapas and the path of the breath.
Translation
Kuṟavañci Song (Kuṟavañcippā)
1. Seeking the great primal Light day after day,
searching out the Master's feet, singing to win his grace,
receiving the grace of Manōṉmaṇi,1 she who is the Light,
and setting the feet of Śuka2 fast within the mind,
2. curbing pride and looking to the state of grace,
setting the mind to know all the rare worlds,
we bow as is fitting at the feet of the great ones;
with devotion we keep the yoga of steadfastness3 every day.
3. Was it not by burning out our demon nature that we saw the state of Brahman?
We passed beyond the realm of Brahmā and took our seat within the suṣumṇā.4
We did not roam like dogs; we sat in tapas,
curbing pride thoroughly, and in great state.
4. We will not trust this treacherous life and fall into torments;
we will not tire of seeking the feet of the mighty maharṣis;
we will never so much as look at those who do the five great sins;
we will not forget the friendship of those who have cut loose from sinful deeds.
5. Singing every day with a thousand Siddhars,
we will dance together the holy dance of bliss;
the siddhi that Mother Umā Manōṉmaṇi told me,
knowing it, we will live by it, keeping close to the great ones.
6. To find the true state we thought and melted and pined;
day after day we sought the feet of the spotless Lord;
knowing the kalai,5 we held the vāci6 firm in its bonds;
raising the fire, we learned the root centre7 with ease.
7. Was it not by giving up food and sleep that we kept the yoga of steadfastness?
Cutting loose from our kin, we lived in a mountain cave;
we saw the supreme Space that sight itself cannot reach;
we ate the kaṟpam8 and built the body up.
8. We will not grow slack and keep company with father, mother and kin;
we will not seek out works that never reach the state of tapas or know it;
wondrously we came to know wisdom in its excellence;
we came to know the grace of the supreme Space on high.
9. On the path of the nose-tip we learned to fix the gaze;
we came to know the fair circle of the root and its whorl;
knowing the way to raise the vāci, we will cut off desires;
without slipping, we will refuse the doings of the world.
10. Climbing to the seat of the Śakti cakra, we saw the pure Space;
thinking "All is the supreme Space," we held it in the mind;
every day we will know the freed ones who have won siddhi;
with fixed attention we will learn what the kalai of life is.
11. We took up the teachings of the ninety-six tattvas;9
in the pure10 supreme Space we saw the Master's feet;
I myself came to know what the world of heaven is,
by seeing the light of the supreme Space on high.
12. The āṇava11 that says "I" I gladly cut away and cast off;
having gained the good, I came to dwell in a cave;
we came away having quenched the pride that says "self";
holding tapas alone as our refuge, we delighted in the path of the breath.12
