"The good light is the light of wisdom."
— Puṇṇākku Siddhar, Puṇṇākkuc Cittar Pāṭal
This is the song of the Puṇṇākku Cittar, the "Oil-cake Siddhar", whose name is the word for the cake of pressed seed left when the oil is drawn off. It stands second in the ninth part of Project Madurai's collection of Siddhar songs. The Siddhars (Tamil cittar) were wandering yogis and poets who sought liberation within the body and mocked the show of religion.
The song has twenty short verses of three lines, and every verse turns on the same call in its second line: ñāṉammā, "O Lady Wisdom". It begins with a cry for refuge at the feet of the Goddess Manōṉmaṇi, then speaks plainly: true wisdom is a priceless gem; the life sits in the body like a chick in the egg; teach the willing, never the wicked; stay awake. Then the mockery begins: holy men who never learned the scriptures and only want property; ash, chatter, pūjā and waving hands; the drums and the weeping crowd at a funeral, where wisdom lasts only until the corpse reaches the burning ground. The song ends on the body itself: a pot of filth blown up with wind, a stinking carcass, a false cage without salt.
Translation
1. Longing to see the holy feet of the Goddess Manōṉmaṇi,1
I reached out and begged2 — O Lady Wisdom3 —
crying, "Refuge, refuge!"
2. Pass beyond ignorance, drive your knowing hard,
and if you find true wisdom — O Lady Wisdom —
it is a gem beyond price.
3. As the whole chick waits inside the egg,
so within this body, a coat — O Lady Wisdom —
the life itself stands.
4. Though the lack left over does not come, though true wisdom is not sought,
because of the lack once touched4 — O Lady Wisdom —
true wisdom shows itself.
5. Not knowing their own hearts, not knowing the breath,5
taking saṃsāra6 for the truth — O Lady Wisdom —
they flounder in its ocean.
6. To the willing you may give teaching any day you like;
but teaching to the wicked — O Lady Wisdom —
give it, and harm will come.
7. For winning liberation, and for those who hold it as their first aim,
giving up even sleep — O Lady Wisdom —
one must stay awake in mind.
8. If you look on waking thought as a dream,
then even Yama, who comes in anger — O Lady Wisdom —
will fall flat before you and go.
9. Not seeing the truth by the lamplight of yoga,
into the pit that is called lust — O Lady Wisdom —
they sink, and are gone.
10. Making themselves holy men without learning the scriptures,
thinking to gather property7 — O Lady Wisdom —
millions upon millions wander.
11. Smeared ash, empty talk, pūjā and waving hands
are only grounds for mockery — O Lady Wisdom —
there is nothing in them at all.
12. Decking out the vessel,8 the women with their hair let down,
not knowing the reckoning — O Lady Wisdom —
wept, distraught.
13. The beating of the drums, the crowds that gather —
is it not because they never counted their days — O Lady Wisdom —
that they waste away and weep?
14. The loincloth is borrowed, the body you have is borrowed,
the holy mother is borrowed9 — O Lady Wisdom —
and not knowing it, they wander.
15. Their wisdom lasts till the dead are brought to the burning ground;
talking like saints — O Lady Wisdom —
they roam about the world.
16. Though you live in the forest, though you do great golden austerities,
there in the forest, without a guru10 — O Lady Wisdom —
you cannot see it or know it.
17. The good light is the light of wisdom;
a light without it — O Lady Wisdom —
is a mean, low light.
18. Those who cry "saṃsāra" and "it is an ocean"
and suffer torment — O Lady Wisdom —
what use is it that they live?
19. This came here stuffed with wind; this is a pot of filth;
this is a stinking carcass — O Lady Wisdom —
a false cage without salt.
20. Five fellows came together, seeking to rule as kings,
and to wander at will — O Lady Wisdom —
this is the false cage they built.

Footnotes
-
Manōṉmaṇi: a name of the Goddess, Śiva's Śakti, praised by the Siddhars as the one who grants inner vision. ↩
-
The print reads தாவித்திரந்தேளே (tāvittirantēḷē), which is not a clear word. It is read here as தாவி இரந்தேனே, "reaching out, I begged". The reading is uncertain. ↩
-
ஞானம்மா (ñāṉammā): "Wisdom, mother" or "Lady Wisdom", the companion the singer speaks to in every verse. Several lines also end with aṭi, the familiar call to a woman; it is carried by the refrain and not rendered separately. ↩
-
விட்டகுறை (viṭṭakuṟai), "the lack left over", and தொட்டகுறை (toṭṭakuṟai), "the lack once touched": a Tamil pair of phrases for what is unfinished from former births and carries over into this one. The verse says that true wisdom can dawn by what was begun before, even when it is not sought now. ↩
-
சரம் (caram): the breath as it flows through the nostrils, which the Siddhars read and govern. ↩
-
சம்சாரம் (camcāram): saṃsāra, the round of births. In Tamil the word also means household life, and even a wife. The singer plays on saṃsāra-sāgara, "the ocean of births". ↩
-
ஆத்தி (ātti) is read here as ஆஸ்தி (āsti), "property, wealth". The word can also name the ātti tree, sacred to Śiva, which gives poorer sense here. ↩
-
கலம் (kalam), "vessel": here the body, a corpse adorned for its funeral, while the women mourn with loosened hair. ↩
-
தேவமாதா (tēvamātā), "the holy mother" or "divine mother". It is not clear whether the singer means the mother who bore you or the Goddess; either way, she too is only a loan. ↩
-
The line repeats காட்டில் (kāṭṭil), "in the forest", from the line above. It may stand for காட்ட (kāṭṭa), "to show", giving "without a guru to show you". The printed word is translated. ↩
