Subramaniyar — The Wisdom of Subrahmanya

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

"Know the point, hold the kalai still, and stand on the summit."
— Cuppiramaṇiyar Ñāṉam

Cuppiramaṇiyar Ñāṉam (சுப்பிரமணியர் ஞானம், "The Wisdom of Subrahmaṇya") is the last of five Siddhar wisdom-poems gathered in the Project Madurai anthology from the great Tamil collections of the Siddhars' songs. It bears the name of Subrahmaṇya, the god Murugan, called in the poem Kumaraṉ, Ṣaṇmukha the Six-faced, the Lord of the Spear and, most often, the Peacock Hero; and it is he who teaches in it. The poem has an invocation and thirty-two stanzas, each of four long lines printed in eight halves (stanza 15 has only six), and each stanza takes up the last word of the one before.

It opens as a story. From the Highest comes the sound that becomes Śiva and Śakti, and from Śakti-Śiva come Ṣaṇmukha and Gaṇapati. Śiva and Umā hold out a mango for whichever son goes round the mountain: Kumaraṉ leaps onto his peacock, while Gaṇapati walks round his parents, saying, "You yourselves are the mountain Meru," and wins the fruit. Kumaraṉ too is given a mango and made king of the mountains. On the northern slopes of the Himalaya the ascetics beg him to save their tapas from the asuras, and he scatters them with his spear.

Then the sage Agastya comes, takes refuge, and asks the cause of that victory, and the story becomes a teaching. The Peacock Hero kindles the sacred fire, anoints Agastya from the filled pot, and gives him the yoga of the breath: pressing it "taut" in the suṣumṇā, breathing in and out on seed-syllables, turning the Five Letters of namaśivāya head to foot, and chanting long chains of syllables joined by kili, until the body "is stone" and Death has nowhere to stand. He sends Agastya to Potikai and Caturagiri, and the poem ends with the god on the summit of the cosmos, rejoicing in the spear of Oṅkāra.

The Wisdom of Subrahmaṇya

Kāppu (Invocation)

1. Withdrawn into the unceasing suṣumṇā,1 going the good way
of the near kalai,2 of vāci,3 of Śiva-yoga,
knowing the ford that is the way, keeping silence, to the great
summit of the mountain of the cosmos he went;
holding the clear spear of Oṅkāra,4 clear in mind,
he saw himself by knowing;
he dwelt in the open, supreme space,
and became the Śakti-Śiva of Vedānta: he is our protection.

Nūl (The Work)

1. In the beginning, the sound born of the Highest5
became the supreme Śiva who stood as the formless and the formed,
became Śakti at the side of Śiva, who is called Light,
became the seven kinds of birth in the ancient world,
stood as itself by the knowing called right order,
became the full, the all-complete, the partless;
and by the grace of Śakti-Śiva, called the source,
Ṣaṇmukha and Gaṇapati came to be.

2. When Śakti-Śiva, having come to be, became one, their hearts grew tender,
and as they stood in fullness
they took a plump mango in their hand, and on Kumaraṉ and
Gaṇapati they looked kindly:
"To the one who goes well around the mountain, the good fruit
we will give," they said.
Kumaraṉ, knowing the fruit was a prize, leapt onto his peacock
and set off around the mountain.

3. After he had gone, Gaṇapati thought it over:
"You yourselves are the lofty mountain Meru," he said;
and as soon as he saw it, the feet of Śiva and Umā
he circled with his whole mind, and took the fruit,
and meditating on Śiva and Umā,
knowing the sign, praising the holy one within his way,
he ate it and knew its taste; and as he stood there, the steadfast
Gaṇapati they called: "Come."

4. Saying "Come," they took him up, embraced him there, gave him the milk of grace:
"Be the seat of the great Five;
stand as king of the root, crying Ā;6
become the First, the life of the Five Letters;7
become the pure Being-and-Knowing called Kū; as the gathered and risen
First Guru, the Teacher,
within the flower they call the thousand and eight petals
be settled, and live there by the knowing of the mind."

5. At the moment they said, "Dwell and live,"
the Peacock Hero came before them, alone,
and seeing him standing as one in rare tapas,
"Come, apple of our eye," they said;
and with tender care they gave him a mango: "The good, the great
mountains of world upon world you have circled;
set right, win long life and live, and steadfast
dwell as king of the mountains, and live."

6. As soon as they said, "Live," the Peacock Hero
took the great feet of Śiva-Śakti upon him,
and crying Ā he mounted the peacock, and Kailāsa
he went circling eagerly; and as he went
round, on the northern side of the Himalaya, the pure
and perfected ascetics saw him;
and as they bowed at his feet and stood in reverence,
the ascetics and the ṛṣis came to him.

7. He looked on those who came, as he stood on the mountain;
calling him the great True Guru, they bowed at his feet:
"On the slopes of this mountain, for many days, happily
we have lived doing tapas, Lord!
Out of the sky the rākṣasas come upon us,
make havoc and drive us away!
Stay with us in your beauty and guard our tapas!" they said, and pure
in mind they began their tapas.

8. They began; the mind subsided; they kept their state;
and while they stood in purity and played,
the asuras too, whose minds never subside, made mischief without fear;
seeing the hearts that worked that mischief,
he grew firm, mounted the peacock, took the red spear,
and that the asura clan, coming on red with rage, should die,
he drew himself together,8 meditated on the spear's point,
let it fly, and the asura clan flew away!

9. Flying off, taking forms of many kinds,
rank upon rank, the asuras came flying back.
He looked well on the splendid hosts that came,
mounted the steadfast peacock and stood clear-minded,
and that dharma might flourish, he took gross, subtle
and formless shapes, the causal form,
and the wicked asuras who came on without end he ground
to dust, and made the tapas stand.

10. Standing firm, holding the victory won, in mind
upright, the sages who do tapas saw it;
with the kalai, their minds made clear, rejoicing,
they thought on the feet of the Hero of the forest peacock and praised them;
heads bowed at his feet, they received his eye of grace;
the ascetics and the ṛṣis bowed down
to the Lord of the Spear,9 who stood there holding the bow,
beheld him, and each went home.

11. As they went their ways seeking their homes, the devout
great sage Agastya came:
"Knowing the decree that the asura clan should die,
you meditated on the victorious spear;
knowing the way, you became gross and subtle, and in gracious
causal form,
knowing their plot, you destroyed them, Lord! Ṣaṇmukha,
my Guru! I take refuge."

12. At the sage Agastya, who said "Refuge," looked
the Lord of the Spear, who stood as Ṣaṇmukha,
and knowing him as humble as a blade of grass,10 "Who are you?" "Me?
A child who worships your holy feet," he said.
"What is it that comes as sense and inner sense?11
Come," he said in compassion, and granted his gracious glance:
"To know the moment and help is dharma." And with courtesy:
"Tell me why you have come."

13. When the Peacock Hero said, "Tell me," the radiant
Agastya, who had come, spoke:
"The wicked asuras who came on in a rush, as Ṣaṇmukha,
standing with the spear,
you told to go, and destroyed them. That
cause, by which you stood in holy form, show me;
the inner ground, gross and subtle, and as truth
tell me the cause."

14. Hearing the firm "Tell me,"
the Peacock Hero, holding it as true, made firm,
set things in order and made the sacrifices,
and "With discipline, great sage Agastya," he said;
knowing the half,12 he seated him near; the fire pit13
he kindled with the mantra called the First;
and knowing the flaw, as he chanted the mantras,
it came to be, full, in the pot.

15. Taking the pot, filled with what had come to be,
he anointed the great sage, who was true;
for all nine of the good planets the gracious
state of blessing he showed,
and that he might see the hill-high gate of blessing, mind gathered in,
by knowing: "Press it taut."14

16. With a twang, with force, inside, at the tongue's point,
the gate of true wisdom will open then;
standing inside the way of the stone door,
knowing the kalai, by vāci, gazing at the lotus,
fix it: at the root breathe in with vaṅ;15 in the firm
samādhi, breathe out with ciṅ;
if ever and always you hold to it like this,
hear the truth of the tenfold dīkṣā that is one.

17. In truth, in the suṣumṇā, press it
taut, firmly; hear the dīkṣā that has no end.
With goodness chant ōṅ, rīṅ, aṅ, uṅ,
and if with intent you make sixteen repetitions,
Gaṇapati will shine forth, gentle;
looking at yourself in the suṣumṇā, the place,
if subtly you say Ōm Namaśivāya,
before you look, the vision of Brahman is yours.

18. Yes, son: saying namacivāya nama,
and after that vaya namacivaya namaci,
son, switch them about, head to foot,
and with care switch them about, foot to head;
yes, son: namacivaya civayanama,
and after that civayanama civanama;
Om, son: as you turn it to namacivaya, the true
ādhāra16 will be won.

19. With a steady mind, son, the Five Letters you too
must rightly switch, head to foot, foot to head;
in purity the deities of the ādhāras will come
and, as I said, stand at ease in the heart;
meditate like this with devotion,
smear the sacred ash thickly, as a set habit;
if you keep doing this every day,
the unstable gross body will stand firm. See!

20. Look, son: knowing the kalai, standing in the state,
hear with devotion the secret of the ādhāras.
Straight, son: chant ōm kili aṅ over and over;
knowing the state, chant aṅ kili naṅ over and over;
Kār, son:17 chant vaṅ kili ciṅ over and over; with compassion
chant ciṅ kili vaṅ over and over;
lean close, son: chant vaṅ kili yaṅ over and over; caluti:18
chant aṅ kili maṅ over and over.

21. After chanting, chant vaṅ kili ciṅ over and over;
truly, chant aṅ kili ciṅ over and over;19
rightly, chant aṅ kili maṅ over and over; knowing the state,
chant maṅ kili rīṅ over and over;
from the first, chant rīṅ kili ōm over and over, my son;
chant, switching head to foot;
in the light, in the suṣumṇā, rest the mind's eye,
and in purity put on the sacred ash.

22. Take it, son: when you have put on the sacred ash,
keenly switching foot to head,
say it, son: chant ōṅ kili rīṅ over and over;
purely, chant rīṅ kili maṅ over and over;
Vil, son:17 chant maṅ kili ciṅ over and over;
all the workings will appear to you plainly, man;
within, son, chant maṅ kiliṅ over and over;20
noble one, chant ciṅ kili maṅ over and over.

23. After chanting, chant vaṅ kili ciṅ over and over;
noble one, chant ciṅ kili maṅ over and over;
rightly, chant maṅ kili naṅ over and over; knowing the state,
chant naṅ kili yaṅ over and over;
in the light, chant maṅ kili ōm over and over;
in purity the twice-six tapas, too, are won.
On the street of the ādhāras and the upper ādhāra, the sky stilled,
the eyes stilled, reach it and stand.

24. Stand, son, eyes stilled, pressing it taut;
knowing the state, if you do prāṇāyāma, son,
the body is stone, son. Where is Death? Of what is called Death,
all the diseases will run off, out of sight;
within, son, vāci will grow firm; the mantra you chant
will be accomplished too.
I have told you, son, the gross and the subtle;
now hear the summary of the gross that stands shining.

25. In brief: as I have told the ādhāras, gross and subtle,
keep doing prāṇāyāma;
with melting love, by japa and tapas and worship,
see it truly within you and grow sure;
abide in abundance; the living soul itself
becoming the Supreme that stands as praṇava, you too,
press close, and go into that space of the cosmos,
and do prāṇāyāma with discipline, in mindfulness.

26. Do it, son: as you do prāṇāyāma mindfully,
Śiva, Śiva! hear me tell the karumāṉam:21
it is no lie, son: the prāṇa-breath will not go; settled, it
plays: hear the wonder.
Gently, son, in the suṣumṇā press it taut,
as its seat, at the root breathe in with vaṅ;
truly, son, in the suṣumṇā breathe out with ciṅ;
swiftly, at the throat, hold it with aṅ.

27. Holding it at the throat with aṅ,
without moving, vāci, the holy vāci,
climbs into the whorl of the body that is the red lotus,
turns back into that body and dwells there;
with courtesy, within itself, itself alone,
vāci stands in its own nature and plays;
auspiciously, in the suṣumṇā, press it taut,
keep to the way, abide as this world and the next, and see.

28. To see her, hear the meditation of Śakti;
I tell it as the seed: hear it with care.
To take it on, you shall recite aṅ ciṅ,
make sixteen repetitions with understanding,
and that it may dawn, smear on the dust of the sacred ash, and in purity
Parāśakti will dance;
to fix it, meditate like this,
and see the firmness of prāṇāyāma in truth.

29. Steadfast great sage Agastya, listen:
meditate on the true Śakti;
like sun and moon and the light of the flame, the five Makers:22
know their seats, and do prāṇāyāma steadily;
come to Potikai,23 which is the meaning of the scripture,
rise on vāci, the kalai of the glad, living breath,
intent, the mind made one, stand in the whorl,
and take up the untroubled drink of amṛta!

30. To drink the drink, the moon's amṛta,
he showed the way of the whorl that is the Supreme Brahman,
told the places, the ādhāras and the upper ādhāra, the knowing of them,
and the hard points of prāṇāyāma;
he showed the state called wisdom, showed the root, the nādānta,24
the dwelling of the Six-faced he showed,
and showed the point of the spear called silence:
"Know the point, hold the kalai still, and stand on the summit."

31. "Stand, son: go to the summit of Caturagiri,25
dwell on steadfast Potikai,
become yourself within, son, press it taut,
and the one mantra you have thought of in your mind,
say it, son: when you chant it in meditation,
purely it will be accomplished; just stand still;
go, son, by the eightfold yoga, to the feet of Śiva, the Guru,
and stand there clear."

32. By that clear clarity seeing himself,
and that he might sit steadfast and do tapas for ever,
he gave the boon of undying grace; and eagerly
the Peacock Hero, holding his spear,
went up onto the summit of the undying mountain of the cosmos,
and became king of the eight mountains;
and, all else ceasing, became himself the whole space of the cosmos,
and rejoiced in the spear of Oṅkāra. It is finished.

Footnotes

  1. Cuḻumuṉai (suṣumṇā), the central channel of the breath, between iḍā and piṅgalā. ↩

  2. Kalai (kalā), a "digit" of the moon, and also an inner art or power. ↩

  3. Vāci, the breath as the Siddhars use it: the living breath, worked in yoga. ↩

  4. Vaṭivēl, "the beautiful spear," Murugan's lance; here it is the syllable Om itself (Ōṅkāram). ↩

  5. Parāparam, "the Highest beyond the high," the supreme reality. ↩

  6. Ā, Kū and Pū open three lines of this stanza as echo-syllables; pū is also "flower." They are kept as sounds. ↩

  7. The Five Letters (aintu eḻuttu, pañcākṣara): na-ma-ci-vā-ya, the mantra of Śiva. ↩

  8. Printed paṭaṅkuvittu; the sense is uncertain, and "drew himself together" is conjectural. ↩

  9. Vaṭivēlaṉ, "he of the beautiful spear." ↩

  10. Tiraṇam (tṛṇa), "grass, a trifle"; the sense of the phrase is uncertain. ↩

  11. Karaṇam and antakkaraṇam (antaḥkaraṇa): the outer faculties and the inner one, mind, intellect and the rest. The question is compressed and its sense is uncertain. ↩

  12. Arai, "half," or perhaps aṟai, "chamber"; uncertain. ↩

  13. Printed ōm kuṇṭam, read as ōma kuṇṭam (homa-kuṇḍa), the pit for the sacrificial fire. ↩

  14. Viṇṇeṉṟu ūṉṟi, "pressing, viṇ": viṇṇeṉṟu is an echo-word for something drawn taut, and viṇ is also "the sky." The phrase recurs through the poem and is rendered "press it taut" each time. ↩

  15. Vaṅ, ciṅ, aṅ, uṅ, ōṅ, rīṅ, naṅ, maṅ, yaṅ, kili: seed-syllables (bīja), kept as sounds. Naṅ maṅ ciṅ vaṅ yaṅ are the five syllables of namaśivāya. ↩

  16. Ātāram (ādhāra), the "supports," the centres of the body. ↩

  17. Kār and vil open lines among other rhyming openings (nēr, cār, koḷ, col, uḷ); kār is "dark, rain-cloud" and vil is "bow," and neither sense is clear here. Both are left as printed. ↩ ↩2

  18. Caluti: so printed; uncertain. ↩

  19. Printed kenṟēṉ ṟōtu, evidently for keṉṟeṉṟōtu, "chant over and over," as in every other line. ↩

  20. Printed maṅkiliṅ: the syllable after kili seems to have dropped out. ↩

  21. Karumāṉam: uncertain; perhaps "the measure of the seed," or the method of the work. ↩

  22. Pañca karttāḷ, "the five Makers," the five lords of the cosmic acts. ↩

  23. Potikai, the mountain in the far south of the Tamil country that is Agastya's seat. ↩

  24. Nātāntam (nādānta), "the end of sound," the state beyond the inner sound. ↩

  25. Caturagiri, a mountain sacred to the Siddhars. ↩
