"A lock is opened by the hand; the mind's lock is opened by the truth."
— Maturai Vālaicāmi Cittar, Ñāṉakkummi
Ñāṉakkummi (ஞானக்கும்மி, "The Kummi of Wisdom") is a song of 185 couplets by Vālaisāmi of Madurai, a Tamil Siddhar: one of the yogi-poets of Tamil tradition who sought Śiva within the body and had little patience for show. Of Vālaisāmi the song itself says only that he sang it in Madurai. His name means "master of Vālai," the Goddess as a young girl, and she is praised in the song. The text was printed in Madras in 1916 as a chapbook priced at one anna. The song is a kummi, a song for the circle dance in which women clap in time, and it is sung to a woman. Almost every couplet ends ñāṉappeṇṇē, "O woman of wisdom," and many end kummi aṭiyuṅkaṭi, "clap the kummi, girls!" Each couplet is a kaṇṇi of two lines, printed in four half-lines, which this translation follows line for line. The first four couplets are kāppu, guard-verses, asking Gaṇapati, Śiva-Subrahmaṇya, the Spear-Lord of Centil and Vināyaka of the root-triangle to protect the song.
The song moves in stages. It opens with a riddle of the body as a village (verses 7–36): tenants called Master Shirt, Master Water and Lord Fire quarrel over their shares, and a landlord waters fallow fields by order, fines those who have no strength left and takes a third of the harvest. Then the body is a Śiva temple with an upper gate and a little locked door at the crown, and the way through is the breath, the five letters and the three syllables of Vālai. The breath becomes a horse to be tied and ridden; Lust and his twelve kin besiege the mind's fort; false ascetics, false gurus and gold-making alchemists are laughed out of the circle; even fasting, pilgrimage and bathing in the Ganges are "only desire." The last part (verses 148–183) follows the Vedāntic reading of "That thou art" through waking, dream, deep sleep and the fourth state, until body and cosmos are void and the Real alone stands.

Śivamayam (All Is Śiva)
The Kummi of Wisdom
1. The supreme one, whose very form is glorious wisdom,
the teacher, the true guru: by his grace,
that I may sing this kummi1 of wisdom upon the earth,
may Gaṇapati, the child of Śiva, be my guard.
2. Praising the feet of Ambikā, the maiden Vālai,2
that I may sing in Tamil this kummi of grace and bliss,
may he who is younger brother3 to the elephant-faced one,
Śiva-Subrahmaṇya, be my guard as well.
3. Him who stands as the four Vedas and the six,4
as all the countless kinds of difference,
praising him as highest, that I may sing this kummi,
may the feet of the Spear-Lord of Centil be my guard.
4. In Madurai city, highest in the land,
for the kummi song that Vālaisāmi sings,
at the foot of Meru, in the triangle of the root,5
may the feet of Vināyaka be my guard.
5. Beginning and end become one; then the growing
cosmos and the body6 become two;
then it stands as kind upon different kind:
hear this principle, O woman of wisdom.
6. The body is a pot of filth; the fine craft
that comes about in it, and how it arises,7
in this Tamil song that is called Yoga, with a glad
heart listen, O woman of wisdom.
7. There is a city, the one great open space; in it
there lives some siddha, a single one;
there is no mouth to tell the place he dwells; and that
bridegroom, "a bride," they say,8 O woman of wisdom.
8. To the child Brahmā,9 who is called the Witness,
a woman came, named Root Nature;10
"For the two, the […]subtle11 and the causal, the ground
is the gross, and we are that," she says, O woman of wisdom.
9. She came to know that he was mute;
"All that mute one's speaking, we are that," she says;
she hoisted her banner to rule the realm,
that very lady, O woman of wisdom.
10. It became a woman's reign, a government;12
can anyone ask to call that a mere woman?
How she joined the earth and the sky and raised a crop:
listen to that way, O woman of wisdom.
11. Building her city, the great queen as ruler
made with skill the statutes of her authority;
the telling of them would never end; of this13
listen to just a little, O woman of wisdom.
12. Five villages were laid out as five villages; in them
each of the five became fivefold;
for the five villages there was one seed; and for it
there is a proper tank of water,14 O woman of wisdom.
13. Beside the village there is a hill as well; and the
settled folk who live inside it:
now listen as I tell their names; and what
is their standing, O woman of wisdom?
14. At Talaimannar, the Head-town, there lives one:
tall Caṭṭaiyappiḷḷai, Master Shirt;15
"The sin and the tax-free grant are mine," she said; that
truth, do you know it, O woman of wisdom?
15. In Kumbakonam lives Appupiḷḷai, Master Water;
"Cut off from my people, I wither badly," he says,
and he came claiming a half share; how is the case
to be made clear, O woman of wisdom?
16. In Mūlakkuṭi, the Root-village, is Vaṉṉittēvar, Lord Fire;16
his bullheadedness, his certainty: is there any way round them?
"The share of all four plots is ours," they say; this
case, do you know it, O woman of wisdom?
17. To Kāttavarāyaṉ, the boundless, belongs
the watch over the quarters; "and all the other inquiry
we see to as well," he says; will things
stand this way, O woman of wisdom?
18. The Supreme Light, who is the sky, he too
says the shares of all five plots are within himself,
gathered into one, so he claims; this
news, listen to it, O woman of wisdom.
19. The village headmen are three; and besides
there is one accountant for the Forest of the Head;
if they make mischief, the way the elder of former days lays down,17
do you know how it goes, O woman of wisdom?
20. The nine dancers are kinsmen with a share; in which
village are the villages […]?18
And for the Cēruvai men of the Five Places, he
has one elder brother, O woman of wisdom.
21. In Cērai the temple priest is a brahmin;
his house stands above the float-tank;
he leaps up and slaps his thighs for a fight; will the land
fall to him? Listen, O woman of wisdom.
22. There is a merchant, one who has a share; he joined it
and rose very high;
if he brings his gold coins bundled up, will the
right to the land pass to him, O woman of wisdom?
23. The stewards are five; and to
oversee their work there are twice five;
the tricksters of the samādhis19 are three:
listen to what they say, O woman of wisdom.
24. The servants are many; and for them
grain-wages and pay are plentiful;
set a patrol on Pot Fort, and they
will slink into hiding, O woman of wisdom.
25. The waste village has one head watchman;
look at him, and he's a little lad;
the Vēḷūr man's half share, his own capital,
he is selling away, O woman of wisdom.
26. There are six times six households; among them
thirty-five are households of strangers;
and in the one of the six-and-ten households, that
one is a lodger,20 O woman of wisdom.
27. Though there are all these people, among them
only two are householders;
put every one of them aside, and who
will sow the crop, O woman of wisdom?
28. A single plough, a single ox; and with it
one drags the leveller over three furrows;21
have you learned and seen the cause of it? With the eye
of wisdom look, O woman of wisdom.
29. The household of the two plots is a tax-free grant; in it
the seed that is sown comes back double;
even the old assessor who knew it of long
came and looked and went away, O woman of wisdom.
30. With no assessment laid against it,22 before
the harvest once sown has even been handled,
if a palm-leaf order comes to plunder it, this
is cruelty: say so, O woman of wisdom.
31. Though you sit saying "It is the fate that came," he
demands the arrears of the levy23 too;
is this his glory, then? And in this,
what comfort is there, O woman of wisdom?
32. Into the plot that lies fallow,24 he says, the lake's
water must be let in as well;
say "We pay no tax," and he
gives you a thrashing, O woman of wisdom.
33. He won't let the households stay in the village; he kept them
and put them to forced labour;
say "We have no strength left," and still he
seizes a fine, O woman of wisdom.
34. Of all that twenty-one thousand two hundred
measures of paddy,25 did any return
come to us? Of it he took a third part
as his landlord's share, O woman of wisdom.
35. Of the paddy left over, the share:
the madman stricken with the sky-sickness,
with Accutaṉ's son and the Sleepy Herdsman,26
wasted it all away, O woman of wisdom.
36. Do you not see how the land bore its yield? And how
it was spent and gone, do you not see?
Stop wandering about in distress; into grace's
bliss come, O woman of wisdom.
37. A house eight spans long; and in it
eight-and-one holes,27 a cage of filth;
the council-men, twice five of them, said, "This
is the dwelling-place of God," O woman of wisdom.
38. The body is the temple of Śiva; in it
the head is the tower over the little gate;
the two […], like crows, […]28
are the hands: listen, O woman of wisdom.
39. The uvula is the flagstaff; and in it
the tower's tank of the moon;
on the right side, called the palate, is seen
the southern holy water, O woman of wisdom.
40. There is a hall of forty-three triangles;29 in its
centre sits its splendour;
what you see is in the Fort of the Wheel; this
is how it stands, O woman of wisdom.
41. The seat of the god is at the centre; the altar
of offering is at the secret parts;
in the Śiva temple with its tiered hall the jewelled
lamp is burning, O woman of wisdom.
42. Such is this holy temple; how could it
be without a gate?
Not knowing how that is, they scatter
and wander about, O woman of wisdom.
43. A lock is opened by the hand; the mind's
lock is opened by the truth;30
unable to open the house, "This is the fate
that left us so," they say, O woman of wisdom.
44. In the gateway there is an upper gate; in that
gate there is a little gate;
lovingly look at the lock on the holy gate,
how tight it is, O woman of wisdom.
45. The syllable: it is the silent syllable; if
it is yours, it is a good key;
open with it gladly,31 and that
path through the crown appears, O woman of wisdom.
46. With the eye, with the mind's eye, if you
see it, the way will open;
not heaping up your lust for women, keep
to the way and look, O woman of wisdom.
47. What you walk toward, watching, is the upper gate; that
path, how is it known?
Without straying from it for an instant, hear the
way along the path, O woman of wisdom.
48. Step past the pit where the dung is dropped; and
then two finger-widths above it, step past;
there is the sign where the seed of birth is found; see
it and listen, O woman of wisdom.
49. Do you not see the palace of Māyaṉ?32 The vaṉṉi
tree that stands there, does it not come to you?
Cross beyond that fondness, and further on is the six-
cornered stair, O woman of wisdom.
50. Do not stand dazed in the corner; holding the
wind of the whorl,33 do not whimper;
do not wander for nothing and lose heart; the gross
disguise, throw it off, O woman of wisdom.
51. Unless you let go of the gross, in it
the subtle cannot be seen;
climb up on the bridge and walk, and the great
road is this, is it not, O woman of wisdom?
52. Near that great road that is the way
there is a city laid out in a circle;
the nāda34 and the song are heard there; it is the divine
Lord's own presence, O woman of wisdom.
53. The presence: tell me, have you seen it? If you have,
have you the skill to speak of what it is?35
Have you first crossed the three voids? In it
are the three lights, O woman of wisdom.
54. The circle of the three lights is the wheel; that
tip of the nose is the suṣumṇā;
he who dwells in that circle of light is the guru,
Nandi36 of bliss, O woman of wisdom.
55. Where Nandi sat is the circle of fire; in it
the gaze is fixed on the space between the brows;
the moon and the bright-rayed sun, in that
place, both stood, O woman of wisdom.
56. Is it not nāda and bindu,37 the four wombs, the ten?38
Is it not nāda and bindu, the seven births?
By nāda and bindu the body and the life; the supreme
Nandi, praise him, O woman of wisdom.
57. In the place where the bindu dwelt, the guru
Nandi sat enthroned in state;
clear your mind and set the letter M39 in place, and that
great lord you may see, O woman of wisdom.
58. If you come close to the lord, the upper
realm becomes our home;
singing the kummi, "Yes, oh yes," into grace's
bliss come, O woman of wisdom.
59. That is the place that is bliss; that
is the place of advaita;40
praising Sadāśiva,41 who is himself the end,
leap and clap the kummi, girls!
60. Wisdom is the seat of a thousand and eight petals;
the gaze is the house of the Moon;
the silence of the letter M where silence dwells:
kindle it, and clap the kummi, girls!
61. The breath of kuṇḍalinī is the letter A; at the nape
and throat is the letter U;42
there is the whorl: set the letter M in it, and Śiva-
yoga is this, is it not, O woman of wisdom?
62. By the praṇava that is the sound Om, she is everywhere
exalted, the colour of the moon's crescent;
Parāśakti, who is the sound Hrīṁ:43 all of you,
vow yourselves to her and clap the kummi, girls!
63. Drawing in the breath is thirty-two; the mind's
full holding is double that;
to tell it: breathing out is twice eight;44 that
measure, learn it well, O woman of wisdom.
64. Through piṅgalā let the breath out; and the swelling
in-breath, draw it in by the left;45
to hold ourselves still in Nandi: Śiva's
gaze is this, is it not, O woman of wisdom?
65. Learn it along with the letter; from the full
moon right through to the new moon,
without forgetting, keep the measure of the count,
and the breath46 is mastered, O woman of wisdom.
66. With the breath raise up the fire, girls; up above the
whorl carry it and feed on the nectar, girls;
crying, "The mūlādhāra is the place of kēcaram!"47
shout and clap the kummi, girls!
67. Hold fast to kēcaram; first
you may know yourself, being yourself;
intently, the feet of Gaṇapati of the root
bow down and worship, O woman of wisdom.
68. The letter NA is Brahmā; in it
Nāraṇaṉ became the letter MA;
the letter ŚI is the god Rudra;48 and still more
I will tell: listen, O woman of wisdom.
69. To tell it: VA is Maheśvara; and to close
the circle, the crowning honour is Sadāśiva;49
by the flawless five letters all that moves and does not move
has its dwelling, O woman of wisdom.
70. The syllables of Vālai are three; who is there
who can speak them with the mouth?
One above, one below, and the middle joined with them:
quickly look, O woman of wisdom.
71. Quickly I will tell it: by the three letters the hundredfold50
spread out, and life itself came to be;
for those who have known and seen, the initiation of Vālai
is this, is it not, O woman of wisdom?
72. At the centre of the wheel of Śiva that is called initiation
set the Goddess's letter, set it firm;
with the vision before you, worship Śiva, and siddhi51
comes into your hand, O woman of wisdom.
73. Do not stand there drunk on toddy and reeling; of opium
and ganja do not take the sleep;
drink within: the draught of the moon's digit and the rest,
pour it, and clap the kummi, girls!
74. Clap the kummi, women! Bring the Lord of the Hall52
to join you, and drink the nectar, girls;
the advaita that stands without a word of "am" or "um,"
sing it, O woman of wisdom.
75. Advaita53 is the source of the Real; the moon:
to worship at the thousand-and-eight petals,
the moon's milk that gives liberation, every day
pour it, and clap the kummi, girls!
76. What is the kindling? In the triangle and circle
at the root, by the breath54 of kuṇḍalinī,
I will set the fullness in place; bind all four, and
this is the rule, is it not, O woman of wisdom?
77. Bind the bindu fast, do not spill it; the whorl's
wind hold still, and do not struggle;
do not let the mind go clashing, aimed at things; lust's
torpor throw off, O woman of wisdom.
78. Give no room to sloth and sleep; to the relish
of food55 and to sorrow do not give way;
stand in the gaze of Sāmba Sadāśiva,56
hold to him, and clap the kummi, girls!
79. Then into your hand come the sixty arts;57 and wisdom's
elixir58 comes and you are absorbed in it;
"This one is God," so said the good
siddhas and the freed, O woman of wisdom.
80. The beginning of yoga is the initiation of Umā; for every
other yoga it is the first initiation;
do not cast away the pleasure of love; the worship of Śakti,
ask for it, O woman of wisdom.
81. Ask for these: bindu, the ancient nāda, Śakti,
Śiva who dwells with her, and the Supreme;
pass beyond these six kinds: that is the yogi's
waking state of practice, O woman of wisdom.
82. That waking is the upper cosmos above the bindu; what
reaches it is the quality-less, the partless itself;
if you would see the Pure that has no support, the place where that
is not seen is the end,59 O woman of wisdom.
83. That is the end; and who, having seen these upper six,
knows the way of wisdom?
Find the great ones whose minds are clear,
serve them, and clap the kummi, girls!
84. The one you serve is Nandi himself; what stands
as yoga is bindu and nāda;
the waking of Sadāśiva, in tune with the life-breath:
that is the place, O woman of wisdom.
85. Setting down A, setting down U, in the upper whorl trace the path;
send up the fire with the breath;
setting down M, see the inner substance of nāda and bindu,
give praise, and clap the kummi, girls!
86. What is the roar? The breath going in and going out:60
kindle it; in samādhi the breath let out
becomes a lamp, the sun's radiance, daily;
pray for it, and clap the kummi, girls!
87. They do not see the suṣumṇā they gaze at; that
it is the tip of the nose they do not know;
learn the way,61 find the great ones,
give praise, and clap the kummi, girls!
88. Give praise, girl, to the crest;62 your deeds,
turn them, girl, to the Fullness;
winnow away the karma still to come and the karma stored up;63
wipe it out for good, and clap the kummi!
89. The place free of bonds is kēcaram;64 to stand in
one half of it is yoga as well;
for those with no country left, the samādhi of Brahman-wisdom
is the state beyond all thought, O woman of wisdom.
90. This is the elixir, and it is true; all other
desires are very small things;
the silence of Sadāśiva, bliss of the Self Supreme:
come to it, and clap the kummi, girls!
91. Call the bond the body; and that
bound beast,65 call it the life;
what stands firm in love, that they call Brahman-
abiding, O woman of wisdom.
92. The source of the body is the five elements; of all
other doing,66 the source is scattering;
the source of delusion is māyā; and still more,
hear it all, O woman of wisdom.
93. Beyond the Unmanifest that holds the world-egg,
beyond Hiraṇyagarbha and Viṣṇu,
beyond the shining Cosmic Person,67 still
higher there is Consciousness, O woman of wisdom.
94. The Real that is Consciousness is Brahman; for that
Witness there is a reflected image;68
become the pure knowing that stands in truth, and the
reflection you can cast away, O woman of wisdom.
95. Yes: if you see this very state, then
the beginning and the end are you yourself;
for us, by the horse of breath, comes the finest
gait, the best goal,69 O woman of wisdom.
96. A thoroughbred horse, strong and swift; the captain
sits high above it;
put it through its paces street by street, and the steed's
display you can watch, O woman of wisdom.
97. That pony will not be held; it
has twelve legs to run on;
tie it with eight ropes, and it
will be brought to measure,70 O woman of wisdom.
98. Will it be held? From the gate of filth, in the very
centre, by the breath of kuṇḍalinī;
bind the eight and the four, and if you honour it,
you can mount and ride, O woman of wisdom.
99. Unless you rein in the subtle horse, within the whorl's
bounds you cannot go;
in a single breath it runs a thousand leagues
ahead, they say, O woman of wisdom.
100. In the stable where the horse is tied, in the mind's
fort, in the market town,
the enemy comes and knocks; that,
ask what it is, O woman of wisdom.
101. Kāmaṉ, Lust, is the eldest of them all; the
tricks he has learned are many;
sluggish Anger and Greed
are his younger brothers: listen, O woman of wisdom.
102. Delusion and Pride are his two sons; and with a
bullheaded, jealous fellow,
[…], Envy, Show and Campaṉ71
are his friends, O woman of wisdom.
103. A kinsman to suit such a friend, a wicked
villain,72 is one Ego;
and Rage, who does a great many things,
is his cousin, O woman of wisdom.
104. Hear it this way: there are thirteen
of them, all enemies;
but if one thing, just one, is brought under, they
all shrink back, O woman of wisdom.
105. There is no stillness while these are about; in the mind's
fort where nothing of worth gets through,
as the cow comes home from grazing, onto the killing field
they drag it, O woman of wisdom.
106. The snake lives inside the anthill; the world's
bond lives inside the heart;
subdue your stubborn pride and rise, and the steed's
display you can watch, O woman of wisdom.
107. The monkey mind, gone mad, if a raving
demon grips it too and it runs riot,
make a medicine to tame it, and the steed
you can ride that very day, O woman of wisdom.
108. You can ride it, the silent breath-horse, while the
nine torn holes73 are left unshut;
if by steadfastness the mind becomes pure awareness, the siddhas'
clarity you may gain, O woman of wisdom.
109. Lock the mind made clear, and into it
set the knowledge that is sure;
grow cool, and with the tongs74 of wisdom and dispassion
fasten it on, O woman of wisdom.
110. In Root Street one gallop; at that
meeting of three roads, a gallop;
in the Upper Street one gallop; and the steed's
display you can watch, O woman of wisdom.
111. Not knowing these ways, "The jewel
mantra!" they cry, wandering about;
know the letter that is the open sky, and the jewel
mantra is that, is it not, O woman of wisdom?
112. With their mantras of silence they
go about with their mouths shut;
those who feed on the essence of the wind:75 can that
make a meal, O woman of wisdom?
113. They say "Mother"; but in a dream, when lust's
frenzy comes, will they remember it?
Though they recite the Veda with their mouths, will pure
silence stay with them, O woman of wisdom?
114. Growing a beard and growing matted locks, and as a fine
sannyāsi putting on a costume,
this filthy game of running all over the place: who here
would call it right, O woman of wisdom?
115. Look for the place where there is no speaking; to have
won it and to stay there is the mantra;
if one who is a teacher gives you the teaching, "The guru
is mighty!" Say it, and clap the kummi, girls!
116. By a guru of mere words, can it […]?76 Lies
they tell; […]?
Join one who is the true guru, and his
own word, listen to it, O woman of wisdom.
117. They do not speak the pride77 that says "I"; good men,
"What is town, what is forest?" they will say;
whoever sees all things as the Self, the good
true guru is that, O woman of wisdom.
118. The guru dwells in the heart; the mind's
crookedness is cut away within oneself as well;
not knowing where the substance lies, how can you
put it to the fire,78 O woman of wisdom?
119. Not knowing how alchemy is done, "Mercury
alchemy is what we do," they say,
and they put mercury and sulphur in the fire; from it
will gold come, O woman of wisdom?
120. They stoop to melt down the cinnabar,79 not knowing
where the true cinnabar lies;
tin and gold they mix together; is that
not a disgrace, O woman of wisdom?
121. They put the poisonous ores80 in a crucible, feed them white
milk, and seal it with a stopper;
though they fire it in the north-east pit, in it
what is there, O woman of wisdom?
122. What is the cause becomes the effect; that
the utter fools do not know how to fire;
though they go about crying "The Fullness!", in it
will there be any merit, O woman of wisdom?
123. "The Three Flowers!"81 they cry, wandering about; how that
Three Flowers came to be, they do not see;
know which flower it is, and "Siddhi
is ours!" Say it, and clap the kummi, girls!
124. They do not know how to fix the caustic; the fierce
salt they never burn to ash;
they mix the sublimate and the calomel,82 and so it
is wasted, is it not? Tell me, O woman of wisdom.
125. Not knowing the fearful art, in the world's
disguise they stand and wander;
know the […] seed,83 and alchemy
is kēcaram, O woman of wisdom.
126. They do not see the key to alchemy; the five
elements as ingredients never cross their minds;
why do they blow into the thick smoke? This,
ask what it is, O woman of wisdom.
127. "The sacred calx is done; we tested it,
and it came out eight and a half touch!"84
Talking up their stuff, they snatch your money; these
are false gurus, are they not, O woman of wisdom?
128. "The flying mercury is finished," they say; "of needle-
lodestone we have made a bowl," they say;
by the trickery of their world-alchemy85
they make a living, O woman of wisdom.
129. Not knowing the liberation to live by, nor
knowledge of their former births,
they eat the rain and turn to dry leaves,
and they falter, O woman of wisdom.
130. What good will faltering do? To master
the mind and then sell it, is that skill?
Do not be bewildered: the greatness of vaḻalai,86
how does it come, O woman of wisdom?
131. He who knows the salt is the alchemist; he who has destroyed
the world's salt is the yogi;
no mistake: the glory of the earth's nāda,
hold to it and see, O woman of wisdom.
132. In the house there is a root; out in the
wild there is the holy root;
for the great ones who hold it fast, mercury
alchemy is this, is it not, O woman of wisdom?
133. Take the ingredient they call "the unseen"; in the black
cūracūrai87 place it and draw it out;
like a thing seen by one who cannot see: "Siddhi
is this!" Say it, and clap the kummi, girls!
134. The gooseberry grows in the forest; the black
gooseberry88 grows in the house;
though you go and stay on the Kolli Hills, will the guru
bring it to you, O woman of wisdom?
135. In the tank of Kāyāmpaṭṭi89 a white
kācā root will have sprouted;
stand in the river of the mouth and rise up straight, and the body
will not die, will it, O woman of wisdom?
136. Not knowing the state of the elixir nor thinking on it, on maddening
ganja they get high and sit;
though the petty go to caves and mountains, the Real,
can they know it, O woman of wisdom?
137. The Last Canto that Koṅkaṇar spoke; in it
to grasp the hidden point is a vast thing;
our guru, the great sage Caṭṭamuṉi: his
two hundred,90 look into them, O woman of wisdom.
138. What the man of true wisdom told in the Hundred; what Tiru-
mūlar realized: that is wisdom;
the sūtra that the full Pot-Sage spoke,
look at its locked secret, O woman of wisdom.
139. Among initiations, Macchamuni's initiation; and the
wisdom he spoke, his one Hundred;
go to the great ones so you fall into no lack,
and ask for the vision, O woman of wisdom.
140. To work the breath straight through by out-breath, in-breath and holding:
that too is only desire;
the advaita Brahman that is kēcaram,
draw near it, and clap the kummi, girls!
141. To give up salt: that too is only desire; to eat
food once a day: that too is only desire;
the Lord of Manōnmaṇī,91 who cannot be told,
come to him, and clap the kummi, girls!
142. In the gateway there is an upper gate; in that
gate there is a little gate;
lovingly lock the little gate,
and press it close and see, O woman of wisdom.
143. Going off to far countries: that too is only desire; "There is
a family god": that too is only desire;
with love, our Brahman-wisdom's light,92
come to it, and clap the kummi, girls!
144. The differences of the sects: that too is only desire; Ganges
bathing and worship: that too is only desire;
that "mine" which stays free of all "mine,"93
praise it, and clap the kummi, girls!
145. The cow that gives no milk, turn it out, girls; the Lord
and the bond as well, let them go and be done, girls;
the light of the Self Supreme that shines above,
pray to it, and clap the kummi, girls!
146. The rubbish heap of principles, throw it out, girls; the Vedas'
and Śāstras' tattered holes, stop them up, girls;
to the Real of wisdom that gives liberation, cry "Come!",
kindle it, and clap the kummi, girls!
147. The six supports,94 too, are only trouble; beyond
them there is nothing at all;
in the state that stands whole, stand fast, women,
come together, and clap the kummi, girls!
148. By the word of the siddhas, look into Siddhānta, and
get clear on Vedānta;
the subtle bond of becoming that the principles are,
listen to it,95 O woman of wisdom.
149. What is that bond? The principles Vedānta
speaks of, along with these kinds;
of the states, from the causal on, and their levels,
I will tell you the reckoning, O woman of wisdom.
150. The principles that are told, seen in four times seven,
that they chant: the forms of awareness are four times six;
spoken within the Veda, the forms of awareness […],96
see their greatness, O woman of wisdom.
151. The great thing is the word "thou";97 the limiting adjuncts
that come into it I will make known;
what is its nature? The form of awareness spoken of before:
hear what it does, O woman of wisdom.
152. With the body, heavy with old impressions, with the breath
of life, with the senses, these become one;
[…] the mind98 joined with them and grew:
these are the four causes, O woman of wisdom.
153. What is called the cause: these seven came
and mingled; that is the "thou";
that causal "thou," in turīya,99
became its own body, O woman of wisdom.
154. The waking state that is its gross body, the Self
that dwells in it as its own
is next called Viśva,100 the one who claims it:
that is its name, is it not? Tell me, O woman of wisdom.
155. Taking a name, together with the inner adjunct,
it gains the subtle body in dream;
for the one of turīya who dwelt in […], the name
is Taijasa,101 O woman of wisdom.
156. The breath of life, joined with the wind,
sinks down and is joined with the root;
the turīya of nāda that came as their gathering,
join it in, and that is the causal body.
157. The state that goes with it is deep sleep; and the one
who goes with that is called Prājña;
the One who has seen all three keenly, him
worship, and clap the kummi, girls!
158. Worshipping, you have seen what the "thou" truly means,
by the reasoning told; in the same way,
[…] the discernment of the word "that"102
I will make known to you, O woman of wisdom.
159. What is the knowing? Just as the meaning of "thou"
took on its limiting adjuncts,
so for the thing that is the Supreme of all,
its body is the jīva's turīya.
160. The All-Knowing, the Cause of All, the Inner
Ruler of All, the Lord of All,
the Maker of All, the Keeper of All, the
Destroyer of All: these are the names, O woman of wisdom.
161. What are these seven names? To speak of them
at length is argument; it is turīya;
because it took on the […] adjunct,103 liberation
came to have a flaw, O woman of wisdom.
162. The flawed jīva, seeing these seven,
became the body of the Supreme that is spoken of;104
because of the state called eternal, "the Shadow-
grasper" is its name, O woman of wisdom.
163. Calling the waking state itself, and then
if it stays as the one who claims it,
they name it, joined so, Virāṭ, they say, […];105
know it well, O woman of wisdom.
164. The three adjuncts that are known; and joined to them
is the supreme dream-state;
the claimant who never parts from it, Hiraṇya-
garbha they call him, O woman of wisdom.
165. Look: here, with the one adjunct,
for the Supreme there is the supreme deep sleep;106
and when it joins that, as the Unmanifest
see it in your mind, O woman of wisdom.
166. See: as you saw and came to know the plain meaning
of the word "that,"
so […] of wisdom, of the Śiva-[…],107
hear the truth, O woman of wisdom.
167. Seeing the true and good turīya of the Self Supreme,
yet by one fault, not looking it through to the end,
for the Pure One of the cool Śiva-state, the Supreme
became his own body, O woman of wisdom.
168. What they chant: the supreme swallowing of the world, the
stilling,108 of these three kinds, one,
the Śiva who has practised it: for him, is it not, the supreme
waking comes, O woman of wisdom.
169. What it becomes: the waking of Śiva, the Śiva-turīya
that stood as its claimant;
if it is gathered up, […] this, they say;109
so the great saying declares, O woman of wisdom.
170. The saying is the swallowing of the world; and what
is the path of bondage? The Śiva-dream;
in the fortunate one who claims it, Prajā-
pati:110 what is he? Tell me, O woman of wisdom.
171. What is told, too: the stilling; if one has stayed
saying, "Śiva's deep sleep is this,"
to call him good, "the Peaceful One adorned," is that
not his name,111 O woman of wisdom?
172. In the turīya of Śiva so named, the claim
is lost, and it stands alone;
is that not well-being? Yet of the first turīya
the state is not seen, O woman of wisdom.
173. What is never seen nor known is the whole turīya; to see it,
whirling, is the highest thing;
the ancient form of the bliss of Brahman,
bow down to it, and clap the kummi, girls!
174. The wisdom you bow to: that is it, girl; the supreme
bliss: this is it, girl;
look boldly, and the One whose form is bliss,
worship him, and clap the kummi, girls!
175. The blissful soul that worships, and the supreme
pure Real: this is it, girl;
the feet of the guru whose form is without flaw,
are these not they, O woman of wisdom?
176. The word is the word "thou"; and in it
the feet are the word "that";112
the differing adjuncts, the states, and the many
names: it has become them all, O woman of wisdom.
177. For a name, it is the peaceful turīya; to speak
of it is its own self-shining;
the Real that no one has ever seen and known: see it,
grow clear within, and clap the kummi, girls!
178. Like Devadatta,113 who gains liberation, the world
in its wholeness became made of itself alone;
Nandi: do not let him go; is not this the rule
of implication, O woman of wisdom?
179. Liberation that is wisdom: this is it, girl; every other
reasoning is the mind's own trick;
all willing and wavering, and the sects as well,
have become itself alone, O woman of wisdom.
180. There is no far, no farther; to tell
of it or to hear of it there is none;
seeing the […] state of Brahman,114 women,
leap, and clap the kummi, girls!
181. The cosmos and the body have gone to the void; beyond
the six as well, all is the great void;
"It is, it is not": the Brahman beyond the beyond,
rejoice in it, and clap the kummi, girls!
182. In words, in this stone, do not stop there;115 the one who is Brahman's
light, the pure open space,
the mighty silence that shines by itself,
know it in your own hands, O woman of wisdom.
183. In the earth, purity came under sway;116 and in it
differences, many and many, arose;
the guru will tell the end of the scripture; that wide
subtle secret, do you know it, O woman of wisdom?
184. Worshipping the feet of the great ones who have known,
this Tamil kummi
in a hundred and eighty-five couplets, without a break,
I have spoken. Long live the true guru's feet!
185. Long may the true guru's feet live! Long may Vālai-
sāmi's Tamil live, every day!
For those of good heart who learn this Tamil kummi of wisdom,
long may their way of wisdom live!
Here ends the Kummi of Wisdom.
Colophon
Colophon: Maturai Vālaicāmi Cittar (மதுரை வாலைசாமி சித்தர்), "Ñāṉakkummi" (ஞானக்கும்மி — The Kummi of Wisdom). Translated from the Tamil of the Project Madurai e-text no. 853_02, whose print base is "Ñāṉakkummi," Madras: printed at the Kalanidhi Vilakka press of P. Munisami Naidu, 1916 (price one anna). Prepared for the Good Work Library by the Tianmu Anglican Church with AI-assisted translation and editorial work. No existing English translation was consulted; the English is made from the Tamil alone. No complete English translation of this work is known to us. All 185 couplets are given in full, one English line for each printed Tamil half-line, with the four guard-verses (kāppu) first. The e-text was made by OCR from a scan and has many misprints: where a word had to be read otherwise than printed, the footnote gives the printed form; where a line or word could not be read, the English marks the gap […], in verses 8, 20, 38, 102, 116, 125, 150, 152, 155, 158, 161, 163, 166, 169 and 180. Much of the Vedāntic passage (verses 149–172) is corrupt and its renderings are tentative. Verse 142 repeats verse 44 with small changes, as printed. Tamil and Sanskrit terms without an English equal are kept and footnoted. The refrains are rendered the same way each time: "O woman of wisdom" and "clap the kummi, girls!"
