The Words of the Luminaries (Hebrew: דברי המארות, Divrey ha-Me'arot) are a cycle of liturgical prayers from Qumran Cave 4, preserved in three manuscript copies (4Q504, 4Q505, 4Q506) and dated to the second or first century BCE. Each prayer is assigned to a day of the week and addresses God with a meditation on Israel's history — creation and the first man, the exodus, the covenant at Horeb, Jerusalem and the Davidic kingdom, the exile, and the return. The language is Biblical Hebrew, formal and elevated, saturated with Exodus and Deuteronomy. The prayers do not merely recall history; they use it as leverage for supplication. Each day's meditation is a rehearsal of the covenant, offered as the ground on which mercy is asked.
The manuscripts are fragmentary, sometimes severely so. Many lines survive only in partial form, and the ordering of fragments is a matter of scholarly judgment. This translation follows the fragment sequence established by García Martínez and Tigchelaar. Lacunae are marked [...]; editorial readings of damaged text that are reasonably certain are given without brackets. Where reconstruction is uncertain, [...] preserves the gap rather than ventures a guess.
