Shelf Terms

General Texts — A room on the Oceanic shelf. See General Texts.

Māori — The Indigenous people and language of Aotearoa New Zealand. The new Māori doorway keeps particular iwi, hapū, place, and transmission relationships visible rather than treating Māori as an undifferentiated folklore category.

Te Arawa — A confederation of iwi and hapū associated with the Te Arawa waka and the Rotorua/Bay of Plenty region. The shelf's Hinemoa witness has a direct Te Arawa/Rotorua relation; it is not a pan-Māori witness.

whakapapa — Genealogy and layered relationship among people, atua, lands, waters, and other beings. A historical printed table can witness whakapapa without exhausting its living authority.
