Hymnos, Son of Skythas at Delphi — A Chersonesite Proxeny Entry

A Chersonesite Proxeny Entry

This small Delphic inscription excerpt belongs in the Scythian library because it preserves a Chersonesite man named through his father Skythas in a public Greek interstate list.

The source is not a Scythian ethnic statement by itself. It is a compact north Black Sea contact witness: a man from Chersonesos appears among Delphic proxenoi, with Skythas preserved as his father's personal name.

The translation below was made from the inspected Greek text captured from PHI Greek Inscriptions, Syll.³ 585 / PH242007.

Translation

These are proxenoi of the Delphians:

In the archonship of Diodoros, with Orestes, Boulon, and Menon serving as councillors in the first half-year: Hymnos, son of Skythas, a Chersonesite.

Colophon

This Good Works Translation was prepared for the Scythian shelf by the New Tianmu Anglican Church from the Ancient Greek inscription excerpt printed below. The English is a new rendering from the Greek. PHI Greek Inscriptions was used as the source text, with the local HTML capture retained for verification.

The translation is a new Good Works rendering from the inspected Greek source text.

Source Text: Syll.³ 585 Excerpt

Ancient Greek source text from PHI Greek Inscriptions, Syll.³ 585 / PH242007. Presented here for reference, study, and verification alongside the English translation above.

Source Colophon

The source text was inspected from PHI Greek Inscriptions, Syll.³ 585 / PH242007, Phokis, Delphi, dated by PHI to 197-175 BCE, with cross-references to SEG 17.236, SEG 19.383, and SGDI 2581. The source capture is preserved in the Scythian source archive.

PHI prints the relevant entry across lines 18-20 of a longer proxeny list: ἄρχοντος Διοδώρου ... τὰν πρώταν / ἑξάμηνον Ὀρέστα, Βούλωνος, Μένωνος· 9 Ὕμνος / Σκύθα Χερσονασίτας. The number marks the list entry, not part of the translated body. Σκύθα is treated here as the Doric genitive of the personal name Skythas, "son of Skythas," and Χερσονασίτας as "a Chersonesite."
