Sauromates and the Temple of Ares — A Bosporan Royal Building Fragment

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

A Pantikapaion Greek Inscription

This short building fragment from Pantikapaion belongs on the Scythian shelf because it places a Bosporan King Sauromates in a cultic setting centered on Ares. The surviving Greek appears to record repair of the temple of Ares and the cult image within it, though the restoration is damaged and must remain visibly provisional.

The translation below was made from the inspected Greek text captured from PHI Greek Inscriptions, CIRB 63 / PH182778.

Source Colophon

The source text was inspected from PHI Greek Inscriptions, CIRB 63 / PH182778, Pantikapaion (Kerch), dated by PHI to 173-211 AD, with PHI noting IosPE II 47. The source capture is preserved in the Scythian source archive.

The inscription is fragmentary. PHI marks the royal titulature, the repair verb, and the cult-image wording as restored or uncertain; the translation therefore keeps brackets and a question mark rather than treating the restoration as complete stone text.
