Estonian literature is not a synonym for folklore, the modern Republic of Estonia, or every language used within its borders. This room begins with Estonian-language and Estonian literary-culture holdings: the compiled epic Kalevipoeg, historical English reader witnesses, nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century song collections, and A. H. Tammsaare's complete first volume of Tõde ja õigus in Estonian. The Tammsaare text supplies source-language access, not an English translation, and volume I is not the whole five-volume novel cycle. Begin with the introduction, reader's guide, and glossary. Estonian is a Finnic language within the Uralic family; it is not Finnish, a Baltic language in the linguistic sense, or a replacement for the distinct Võro, Seto, and Livonian traditions.
