VIII.38

✦ ─── ⟐ ─── ✦

Come thou together, Indra bold and Agni bright with flame!
The singers summon both of you; we speak each mighty name.
The sacrifice is kindled here; the butter burneth high.
Come ye and take your portions, gods—be present, do not pass us by.

O Indra, slayer of the foe! O Agni, purifier pure!
Together ye are matchless; neither demon doth endure.
The one brings lightning from the clouds; the other burns in hearth and home.
The one is victory and war; the other guides men when they roam.

Indra, thy thunderbolt doth slay; Agni, thy flames doth purify.
Together ye do guard the gods and carry prayers toward the sky.
What demon could withstand the two? What evil force could stand and fight
When Indra marcheth fierce and strong beside the fire burning bright?

The demons hear thee coming far and tremble at thy sound.
They know that thou, O mighty pair, hath prowess all around.
No sorcery can save from thee; no magic can avail
Against the thunderbolt and flame—before them all things fail.

We offer soma to you both, the nectar of the rite.
Drink deeply of it, gods benign, and rest here through the night.
Refresh yourselves with what we give; grow strong for battle's day.
Come unto this assembled folk and chase all dread away.

The sacrifice ascendeth straight through Agni's sacred flame.
Indra doth hear the calling loud and cometh at the name.
Both gods are pleased with what we bring, with butter, milk, and song.
Both gods do bless the worshiper and make the household strong.

O Indra and O Agni both! O mighty, glorious pair!
Protect us from all enemies; remove from us all care.
Let wealth and progeny abound; let cattle fill the plain.
And may your joint protection rest on us throughout each day and strain.

Ye are the guardians of the world, the keepers of the rite.
Ye journey always through the heavens spreading holiness and light.
Accept our humble offering; our hymn receives thy ear.
So may we ever prosper, O ye gods forever near.

Grant us long life and victory, O Indra-Agni bright!
Bless all our efforts in the day and guard us in the night.
To thee we bring our praise and gifts; to thee we bend the knee.
O mighty gods, forever blessed and honored let ye be.

The ritual is completed now; the soma hath been drunk.
The altar hath been served by those whose dedication is not shrunk.
So bless us, O divine powers; grant us your strongest aid.
Let all our enemies retreat; let all our foes be flayed.
