གནས་ཆེན་པོ་བརྒྱད་ཀྱི་མཆོད་རྟེན་ལ་བསྟོད་པ — Aṣṭamahāsthānacaityastotra

The Aṣṭamahāsthānacaityastotra — "Praise of the Stūpas of the Eight Great Holy Sites" — is a devotional hymn attributed to Nāgārjuna (c. 150–250 CE), the founder of the Madhyamaka school of Buddhist philosophy. In eight stanzas, each closing with a homage, the text maps the Buddha’s life through the eight great stūpas that mark its supreme events — from the arousal of the mind of awakening at Bodh Gayā to the passage beyond sorrow at Kuśinagara.

Preserved in the Degé Tengyur, Stotra section (Tohoku 1134), folio 82a–82b. The Sanskrit original is lost; the Tibetan survives as the sole witness. No previous English translation is known to exist. This is the first.

Homage to Mañjuśrī, the Youthful One!

First, having aroused the supreme mind of awakening
and gathered the accumulations through three incalculable aeons,
at the Seat of Awakening he became a buddha and vanquished Māra.
Homage to the Stūpa of Great Awakening!

In Kapilavastu, the ground of the Dharma,
from the mother Māyā, of pure sustenance, a Śākya was born.
He arose, and from the right, Brahmā received him.
Homage to the Stūpa of Auspicious Arising!

Going to Vārāṇasī and elsewhere for alms,
the mad elephants, mighty in form,
he tamed by the power of his fingers.
Homage to the Stūpa of Taming the City!

When he lay resting in the grove,
a monkey offered honey,
and falling into a well, passed away —
reborn among the Thirty-Three.
Homage to the Stūpa of the Arising of Compassion!

Brahmā offered the wheel, and he turned the wheel of Dharma.
By his power he subdued the six tīrthika teachers.
With countless emanations he satisfied gods and humans.
Homage to the Stūpa of the Display of Miracles!

Ānanda and others, with hosts of nāgas,
offered their devotion; a maiden served milk.
He whose word brings the whole world without remainder to cessation —
Homage to the Stūpa of the Victor Approaching Peace!

Bodhisattvas and pratyekabuddhas,
entirely surrounded by assemblies of śrāvaka arhats —
he who most excellently established vows and ethical conduct:
Homage to the Stūpa of Complete Purity!

With the thought of taming impermanent beings,
having descended from the gods, at the end of all his deeds,
Cunda made his offering; after three months, he reached completion.
Homage to the Stūpa of the Passage Beyond Sorrow!
